"The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) will not vote in favour of Heyneke Meyer to stay on as Springbok coach, if president Thelo Wakefield's latest comments are to be believed. Meyer’s fate will be decided when SARU’s general council meets in Cape Town on December 11.
The 29 members - consisting of the 14 provincial union presidents and CEOs, as well as SARU president Oregan Hoskins - will vote whether Meyer’s contract should be extended.
A weekend newspaper report indicated that the country’s northern and southern unions are in disagreement over whether Meyer should remain at the helm of the Boks.
However, the "general feeling" is that Meyer should be axed, with WP already making their intentions clear.
Wakefield has called for the appointment of former Stormers coach Allister Coetzee to succeed Meyer. “Drastic changes are needed if we want to move South African rugby forward,” Wakefield toldNetwerk24.
“We must make South African rugby a force again. With a strong management team behind him, Allister can succeed as Springbok coach. He has extensive Super Rugby experience and was assistant coach to Jake White when we won the World Cup (in 2007).”
Wakefield was speaking after being re-elected unopposed as president at the WPRFU’s 24th annual general council meeting on Monday.
He will serve in his final term - for the next three years."
