There has been an interesting development for the NSW Waratahs, who are still to announce a replacement for Michael Foley, that they are targeting three big names to help revive their fortunes.
There has been hints of frustration in Sydney of late, with many players uncertain as to the future - as the coach is often a big factor for effective roster retention.

With the exception of the Force (still to name their coach but Foley is technically Director of Rugby), the Waratahs are the only Investec Super Rugby franchise still to reveal their back room team.

However the Sun-Herald in Sydney said that potential complications with Sonny Bill Williams' alleged NRL contract has led to the planning of a massive counter-offer and what would be one of the most audacious recruitment plans in Super Rugby history.

Not content with potentially luring the former Chief and All Black, the Sun-Herald further reports that Ewen McKenzie - who transitions next season from head coach to Director of Rugby for the Reds - and Phil Blake, who was caretaker coach of the Force, are on NSW's wish list.

At this stage it is speculation, with Williams press conference which was held to announce his departure from New Zealand rugby, led to the player saying that he had a "handshake" agreement to return to the 13 man code.

Some reports suggest that the conflict is between Williams' budding boxing career, with more concrete news suggesting that the former All Black has signed a five-fight deal to compete in South Africa once a year.

If Williams was to make such a shift to Sydney, any contract would require a massive third party contribution, as Sonny Bill will not recieve a central top up from the Australian Rugby Union as he represented New Zealand this year.

While McKenzie, a Super Rugby title winner with the Reds, is happy with what he is helping create in Queensland, while it is generally believed that the former Waratahs coach is next in line to the Wallabies coaching throne.

lolz,,,between the aussie media and aussie commentators (excluding greg clarke) they have the combined IQ of 2.

even if SBW NRL deal falls through, theres no chance of SBW going to the waratahs, why play for a loser club and not be eligilbe for the All Blacks, when he can play for the champions the chiefs and help defend the crown AND be eligible for the All Blacks??? oh thats right logic, but i guess the waratahs are use to no chance scenarios, :P

 Very Unlikely scenario-

If at all possibale, it would be-

1. Sunny Bill wants to live in Australia, rather than in New Zealand.

2. If he did play for the Waratahs he may be eligable- as the selectors would be watching him play every week in the Super15, not some club in France etc. If an exception would be made, it would be for SBW.

As for the handshake agreement, wonder how much that is worth.

u only have to watch the SBW press conference where he announced his japanese and handshake deal and also any interview on the topic afterwards that it wont happenm but i reckon the NZRU should let NZ players play anywhere in the spXV and still be eligible, it would give NZ more of a chance to play more kiwis in the best club rugby comp on rhe planet.

Whether this is true or not, it seems to me that SBW is a money hungry business man, more than a rugby player. I know that loyalty in the modern rugby era is not what it used to be, but he is taking a lack of loyalty, to everything except money, to a whole new level!
