...massive hits to the head, twisting of the neck, no arm tackles.....grass cutters below the knee. These tackles are still meant to shake up the tackled player, not merely impede his progress.
Has rugby just got too tied up in it's own rules....frankly I can't remember neck roles, no arm tackles or collar tackles resulting in any injuries. The only bad ones are the head butt types a specialty of Owen Franks. Now we have a bunch pseudo lawyers calling innocuous stuff from the stands.

Separate topic JW, this was about rugby vs gridiron tackling....still your point is taken as I have pointed out in a separate thread.

The other thread was created after my post Moz.
Anyway, on the rugby topic on this thread, the gridiron players have a lot more protective gear and even they have rules about tackling, blows to the head, e.g. head slap is illegal) , etc. We will have to see how the new rugby rules work out this coming season but I suspect it is becoming a bit too restrictive.

Dr Moz nz has an ambivalent attitude to all this. They love to dish out high tackles dumping people on their heads etc etc. However they squeal like mice when the favor is returned -nz h thusave tried to hide behind refs for years now! IF THE BOKS GET EVEN A LITTLE ROUGH ON THEM ITS ALL TEARS THAT LAST INTERMINABLY! REMEM BER BISSIE'S LEGIT TACKLE ON POOR WEE DAN CARTER! SAYS IT ALL. THEY ARE STILL HINGING ABOUT THIS!!!

Helmets have no effect on twisting of the neck. Rugby is hyping about 'high' tackling, while the real risks are collapsed scrums, collisions while fetching and taking the high ball.
