In the match on Saturday - Matfield.s weight was given as circa 109 kga,   In hi s book Matfield stated that his weight in his playing days was 106 to 108 kgs.   So what is his weight and what impact dies it have on Tight 5 play?

The days of a under 110 kgs lock is long gone.  In the present sceanrio locks weigh considerably more - mostly in the range of 116 to 130 kgs.  Most ossies nowadays weigh more than 109 kgs.

The weight issue is important when it comes to Tight 5 play - a heavier player weighing more has more bodily strength than a lighter weight player and is not a good anchor in Tight five play.   Looking at the Springbok Tight 5 - Matfield is at least 6 kgs lighter than any other player amongst the forwards.

It has one advantage - namely - it is considerably easier to lift him in the line-outs - a 10 kg differnence in weight makes a considerable difference in that regard.  On the other hand his tackling - and he made enough tackles - is of questionable quality and he has a higher number of misses than is desirable.   A light-weight  forward player in scrumming is a serious disadvantage and so is it in the case of mauls.   He also is weak in carrying balls in traffic and easily tackled and penalized under such circumstances.

In essence - Matfield is a representative of a bygon era in forward play and is nowadays factually a passenger carried by other heavier and stronger forwards.

In his prime Matfield muscled up to 113-115kg.....he has long since lost that muscle bulk and is back to his starting weight for it is clear he no longer spends any time in the gym.......he looks all of 37 on the field.......its a joke......pretty sad really......much like old man Bakkies

I would like to see a screenshot of Matfield saying that he weighs 106kg, I dont believe that/
Matfield weighs 112kg , and Sam Whit-lock weighs 114kg.
No 5 locks are the lighter more athletic forwards, than the enforcer who should weigh 120 kg plus.

Although in real life 6kg is not that much. It a lock has not been for the toliet fo 2 days they may weigh an extra 2kg. Maybe Matfield should not go to the toilet for 3 days before the match

I doubt whether Matfield was ever in the 113-1515kgs ctgory.  Why did he sid in his book his playing weight was between 106 and 108 kgs then - if he wsindeed circa 8 kgs heavier.   However, the fact is he is by some distance the lightest weight and physically-deficient player among our forwards and it shows in all facets of his game.

He was between 113kg and 115kgs and there are links to prove it. One only needed to look at him to realise that he had muscled up from his starting weight of 109kg

If there was a massive fuctuation in weight, eg 10kg's, then  I would say this is worth debating, but it has been discussed soo many times now.

Any player bouncing between 106kg - 108kg would make little difference as would bouncing between 112kg - 115kg

Yeah but increasing from 108kg to 115kg would make a difference.

All these players muscle up these days.....Etzebeth started at 117kg and now weighs 125kg +

Either way ... old man Matfield is being bullied on the field.

Whether he's 150kg or 37 years old is irrelevant. Fact remains that he's being bullied ... shoved around ... manhandled ...

He's a jolly jumper who want's to be the boss.

What really cracks me up is him walking around as if he's carrying watermelons under each arm ... yet he's as straight as an ironing board.

What's that about?

I agree, but there is always some kind of sacrifice to bulking up, whether you are a speedster or hulking forward

I think we all saw the immediate drop in pace with Habana when he was instructed to muscle up to help him perform better defensively, same us some athletic big  forwards who lose what decent pace they had when going too big

Matfield reminds me of a "lappop" being thrown about, was he always so lacking in physicality or is it just now that he is getting older?

Matfield is a weak link in the Bok side......he is a physical liability......but sadly Meyer is in love with him

Sometimes I wish I could shave that damn eyebrow of his.

I always find myself staring at the thing.

It's like it's got a life of it's own. Like a pet.

Do you think he's named it?

Matfield never was really physical and nver really a top tight 5 player.   H always was moonlighting in the abckline and from there had some good runs and made some good tackles.   The hard yeards were left to Bakkies.
There is not much difference between what he used to be and what he is now in playing style - but he has lost a considerable amount of the little physicality previously since 2007 - when he was in his prime.   Today he is indeed the "lappop" in the set-up, manhndled by all and sundry.   .

I guess everybody missed seeing old man Matfield smashing Vunipola. This is all nonsense....every player goes back in the tackle, except in the  instance where the tackler is at pace and the ball carrier is standing still. It's physics.
I can believe 5 more kgs  might make a slight difference in the scrums and the mauls. But our loosehead side has been rock solid ever since Matfield came back. So I have a plausible theory....but when I test it's validity through observation it fails.

You are a joke.  No player tackled by Matfield  ever goes back in the tackle - I have not seen one of those in all recent tests.   The rock solid loosehead side has been buckling quite frequently in tests and the problem is Matfield.   The 6 or more kgs shows why Matfield flop badly in ball carries - why he is being bullied by most players and why he really is under-performing because of lack of physicality.

Moz, I guess you missed the fact that another Bok had Billy around the ankles at the time Matfield hit him high........just a minor fact you have chosen to ignore.

Matfield was assisted.......for one certainty.......Matfield vs Billy one on one would be a no brainer

Minute 18.40 Matfield smashes Vunipola off the ball. If you haven't seen that Oom it's because you were sopping again you stupid old coot. There was a hand on his right boot, but when in a ruck are you free of all contact? It was a huge hit on the big man and it wiped him out.

Mozart - President of the Moron Fraternity on this site.
Look I was not impressed by that "hit" Vulipola was already going down - Dave is correct in that one - when Matfield "smashed into him" another player had already had him tackled.  Bad example - but I suppose the only one you could find in 8 test apearances.  Unfortunately for the Springboks - most members on this site are correct about Matfield.

Minute 25.40. England attacking scrum. Big pressure from Matfielld and the Beast....leads to Vunipola having to pick up retreating ball. A good tackle by Reinach leads to a turnover....but sadly Reinach gets charged. It could so easily have been a Pom try.

Minute 38.20... Hartley has a full charge at Matfield at the ruck. Matfield cleverly slips the contacts and Hartley ploughs  harmlessly into the deck ....should have been a penalty. Still good Bok ball, Lambie tries to run....makes zero metres

Lat example shows a great amount of physicality - funny man you - the duiscussionis about Matfield's physicality - not his slipping a contact.  Try again.

The half starts with the Reinach try....powerful clean out by Matfield and Coetzee secures the ball for the try. Amazing how Victor is always in the right place doing the smart thing.

Did that try not start from a maul and  if Matfield was not as per normal moonlighting in the backline - he should be there.  His role in that try was minus zero - end of story.

Matfield brings down  maul...yellow.  Boks mauled from 35 metres without Matfield. And these fools say he is not physical. The perfect controlled experiment shows how much Victor really contributes.

I wish we could ask a few of Matfield's teammates in the scrums and mauls how much he contributes. How people can watch something on TV and decide someone makes no impact in a maul where 12 or 14 bodies are glued together going this way and that is beyond me.
