Moz, Matfield should not be our first choice 5 at this stage, good enough for test rugby, but he should be backup. I can't understand why we don' t have a replacement yet...PSDT is a pipe dream. Eben should have been made 5 by now as we are not too short on 4's. Even a fit in form Bekker will be a waste of time as he is also too old to be playing beyond next year's  WC. We need to build for the future, but we are increasing the vacume by picking only these outoppies. Bakkies and Guthro also past  their selby. Still good, but the long term benefits are zero.

HIMMELL - Mozart has gone beserk - he cannot take it that others see the real Matfield and he cannot do so and live in cloud cuckoo land insofar as that one is concerned.  Must be terrible to live in the past - and not being able to adjust to the present.

Magnificent Vemeulen lineout steal by  Vermeulen....it helps the Boks know its going nowhere near Matfield. Game winning lineout play by the Boks deep in their half.  May takes the Reinach clearance.....Matfield is there to tackle the wing.

Matfield unchallenged....great 10 metre maul from the Boks....penalty. Forty five metre kick to win the game....Lambie wants no part of it. Kick to the corner.

Mike, the truth lies somewhere between your view and that of Moz. There are no players clearly better than the one's playing ATM. We do need to invest in youngsters for the future, which Meyer has done, but he ers on the conservative side and could have done a bit more methinks. I t is however not the desaster that you and some make it out to be.

Boks  maul static near the line....goes to Victor. Powers 3 metres through the tackle. Vermeulen does the same....Boks migrate ball to under the poles. Lambie drop...game over.

Now the Poms attack. Robshaw targets the gap between Lambie and Botha and makes a crucial breach.. Overlap....Reinach makes a tackle  and Victor is just too late.

A year or so before he retired, there was a debate about Matfield's weight on my other forum. I tweeted him and he replied he was 108 kg's. Then Saff said I was talking kak so....

Okay now to your points Draad. What I see is no diminution in Bok physicality with Matfield playing. I see our scrum doing fine, our maul doing fine....I see a lot of good defence from him and a lot of smart moves.  Even though he gets few opportunities to turnover opposition lineouts....his massive presence forces teams to throw to secondary receivers. I think Vicor, shockingly because I never thought it was possible, is full value for money.
Right now he is helping the cause. Would it be smart to groom Etzebeth at 5 bringing in power house Willemse at 4? You bet. That would give us great balance. I'm not sure right now though, if it would improve our chances of winning tight tests. Victor does so many smart things.

Wow what a load of utter bloody rubbish......its clear everyone saw one game and Moffie has been watching another.

Fact is, I have been moaning about how useless Matfield is from the day of his present day selection and was shot down by the majority on here.......funny how the tide has turned and the only ignorant lone ranger in support of old man Matfield is good old Moffie.......its classic stuff

No you guys haven't been watching the games....everything is as I described and it isn't complete, I only started at the Vunipola clean out. The trouble with you guys is you think like morons. He is old ergo he isn't physical enough...and then you don't see a thing. Your powers of observation are negated by your bias.
The age thing thing is generally true, and I agree Bakkies has lost a lot. Matfield is an exception. Like Frankie Frederichs who won  the Commonwealth200 metres in his mid thirties....and like numerous Worlds strongest men and heavy weight lifters, who are sometimes in their forties.
Right now he is arguably our second best forward after Vermeulen.

Snapster has always been embarassed because he imagined that matfield was a real lock of some 115 kg.He got some erroneous information and really just would not listen. The Bulle website and the Sarugby.net (official home of the Springboks gave it at 107 kg). What clinched the matter was matfiled say himself - on Twitter I think it was - that he was 107kg. Ou snapster insisted wee victor was clueless and didnt know his own weight!!! HAHAHAHAHA Then victor said in his book as Mike notes that his best weights were 106 to 108 kg.Ou snapter then tried to argue that it was as he got older that he lost weight trying ahrd to save some face.
When matfield retired his weight dropped to 102 kg and it was said he was too light to make a comeback.
To think that a guy 3 kg heavier than Brussouw and 3 lighter than Marcell is a powerhouse in the scums. A big hitting tackler and the best lock ever is utter nonsense. The man has been a disaster re our tight five performa nce
Sorry but it is.

Dear Mike...Victor's weight was never an issue...neither will it be with younger talent...just physical strength and ability. With respect what about your friend Alberts on the flank , too heavy and slow...depends on the game plan, the balance and conditions...Victor is just getting too old and should now be replaced...thankfully PSTD and Eben Etzebeth will be the locks soon. I think Matfield will bow out gracefully...I don't agree with HM choice but I understand why he's persisting with Matfield... Victor is just a tracer bullet or a mentor... I really don't believe he will go to the the WC 2015.

From the Telegraph who seem to understand our rugby better than Bok fans

Other parts of the game may come in and out of fashion but a dominant scrum and a secure line-out will always be Plans A and B in the South Africa playbook. Boosted by the return of Victor Matfield, arguably the finest ever line-out technician, in this year’s Championship, they were again able to disrupt their opponents’ throw while securing a steady stream of ball of their own to set up their favourite weapon: the driving maul.

Mozart - loves to talk BS and quote something similar.  Lets look at Matfield's strong point - line out takes.    In the nine tests he played in - he took 60 lineouts on own throw and 3 on opposition throw-in.  He also managed to lose three line outs on own throw.
Since he calls the line-outs - he watch out for potential losses and rarely - if opposed by a stronger line-out players does not call balls to come to him.   Otherwise he shift aroubd abd sonetiemes jump in front - depending on the opposition he faces.
The above figures indicate no disruption of opposition ball on account of Matfield - but his groupies wil claim otherwise.
Looking atthe figures evenhis strong point - line-out play - has a moderate success rate taking into account the average line out takes,   This is the kind of BS that this hype0upped useless lock keepts doing the rounds.  They have to do that since the rest of his play as a Tight 5 player is way below par.

Anyone can grab hold of someone and go to ground.

Thing is ... how effective is the tackle?

Does he win turnover ball? Does he get go forward by knocking his opponent backward?

Does he at least slow the ball down ... or does the old man end up lying on the wrong side of the ruck, conceding yet another penalty cause they mauled right over him?

Totally ineffective.

His best qualities is to undermine the captain and carry watermelons from here to there.

Ah of so we have all been imagining the fact that Matfield has been exposed as a physical liability and has been turned over and owned in the physical contests. How many times has he been isolated and turned over? Its something like 8 times this year.

Hell even Barrett ripped the ball out of his hands. Matfield makes no impression with ball in hand, in fact he is quite the opposite, he tends to concede possession. There is no way in hell he will offer any grunt in the engine room, be it scrums, mauls etc.

What we do see is him doing the job of a link flanker playing away from the contact zone, we see him making his low tackles and taking his share of the line-outs.......what is not doing is dominating the line-outs or stealing ball off the opposition. Etzebeth has beaten him in the stealing stakes.

The old man is a massive liability and the rugby public has eventually woken up to this fact as have the rugby writers......its only a few ignorant fools who cant bear to concede they are wrong.......but sadly the biggest clown of the lot is our coach, the bloke who's views sadly count the most.

Matfield is a liability as is Bakkies and both have tarnished their reputations. Too great players of the past making fools of themselves right now.......really sad to see.

But the biggest fool is Meyer who believes that these geriatrics will do us proud

It is amazing how the anti-Meyer brigade, the same clowns who each week get their predictions so wrong, have such a good understanding of the game.  If you predict 3 out of 12 for anything, you are not good at what you do and need to find something else to do.
It is almost as if they are part of each scrum and they can feel how hard Matfield is, or is not pushing. They are also part of the rolling mauls and they can have some type of measuring device as to how much Matfield is contributing or not contributing.
The same fools that did not realize that the rolling maul is much better this year than last year without Matfield. Each week the fools get proven wrong but they are allways back for more
Their simplistic and dogmatic understanding of rugby is better...... If someone is young they must be fast, if they are older they must be slow... If someone is 2 inches shorter, then they must be better at the breakdown than someone slightly taller.....It does not matter that Vermuelen, Bismaark, Coenie are all good at the breakdown, despite their builds. If someone is short for a number 7 flank, this means they are good as a number 6 flank..... (you could find this type of rugby knowledge on the back of a chappy paper). It
Just choose the new young curry cup players to replace Springbok greats, even if the new players will ever be standouts at Curry Cup level

More stinking hypocrisy from the lowest character on this board.
The same inadequate loser who launched a decade long hate campaign against Jaque Fourie . . . yes, the same Jaque Fourie who scored 32 tries in 72 test matches while Moffie was droning on about him having no pace, no defence and no appreciation for centre play . . . and who slagged off and belittled Fourie at every opportunity is stamping his foot and suggesting posters who criticize Matfield should do it to his face.
The hypocritical double standards actually beggar belief.
Man I would love to see Moffie repeating some of his vitriolic venom to Jaque Fourie in person and Jaque giving the foppish and self-important old blowhard a good old fashioned snotklap!

There is no way that Matfield would not know that a very large percentage of th rugby public is aware of his lack of physicality and that they also know about his ambition - that they precedence to everything else to be the Springbok captain.
It is not erfromance and the honout to play for the Springboks - it is self-interest to the exclusion of anything else that drives him.   His pally-pally rleationship wit Meyer is the over-riding concrn - and Matfield is prepared to do everything possible to remain in Meyer's good books - while Meyer is the same and overlooks any deficiencies Matfield shows.
Much the same as the rather sick relationship between Fransie and White ultimately cause the S hrks t fail in their quest this year.   White favoured a kick and crahball game - and fRnasie provided that - but not very effectively and White had to prasie-sing virtually af ter every Sharks game.   That it was ultimatel doomed to fail was clear - mainly because Fransie was clueless and poor in execution.
The moral of the story is that a pally-pally rleationship between coach and individual playes are undesrable and leeds to ultimate disaster.

Ou maaaikie somehow matfiled has entenched himslef with Meyer. Its arepeat of the matfiled John Smit scenario with ou pdv. It looks like there isa self serving aspect to all this. Matfiled expects to be, at 38 and a 106 stringbean, at the RWC. It would appear that his performances are irrelevant.
