Boks' Dean Greyling cited 2012-09-15 16:35             Dean Greyling (Reuters) Related Links Dunedin - Springbok prop Dean Greyling has been cited for alleged foul play during Saturday’s match against New Zealand in the Rugby Championship at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Greyling is alleged to have contravened Law 10.4 (a) punching or striking, when he made contact with New Zealand player Richie McCaw with his arm in the 64th minute of the match.

The referee for the match, George Clancy, penalised Greyling and issued a yellow card for the incident.

Upon further review of the match footage the citing commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

The citing is to be considered by SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Paul Tully by teleconference.

Banned Greyling to miss Australia clash 16 September 2012, 10:38

Springbok prop Dean Greyling has been suspended for two weeks for a forearm smash to the face of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw in their Rugby Championship match in Dunedin.

Greyling will miss the Springboks' next match, against Australia in Pretoria on September 29.

He admitted hitting McCaw in the 64th minute of Saturday's clash, which was won by the All Blacks 21-11, when he appeared before Sanzar judicial officer Paul Tully on Sunday.

"Greyling, while in the process of cleaning out at a ruck, recklessly used his forearm such that he made contact in a dangerous way with the head of New Zealand player Richie McCaw," Tully said.

"Although there was no injury complained of, the action had potential to cause serious injury."

Lock Eben Etzebeth, who was banned for two weeks for a headbutt in their previous test against Australia, will be back for the return match.

Springbok's coach Heyneke Meyer apologised to McCaw after the match and said Greyling's behaviour had cost them the game.

"We're a team that prides ourselves on discipline and we can't afford these things in games," Meyer said.

Skipper Jean de Villiers also said Greyling would face internal action.

"We'll never condone playing dirty," De Villiers said.

Insofar as Springbok squad selection is concerned - I think the effective ban would be banned for life - never to return to that level of rugby.   Even if his game improve in years to come - the bad memories will remain for a very long time and he would not be easily forgiven tfor the fact that they cost the Springboks a test they could have won.

I can rmember a case of Chris Koch - the Springbok prop from Boland.   He was many years ago selected as a prop which played most times for the Springboks as a prop.   The game was at Newlands.   He was atrocious that day and was never again selected as a Springbok prop after that.   That just an example of what we can expect in the case of Greyling.   Must say Greyling yesterday was a real disgrace - ten times worse than Chris Koch was in his final game for the Springboks.   So the memory is going to last much longer - something like 50 years or so.:)
