I am not too bothered about whether Jean did or did not......the real issue is how kak he has been.

Vlag[removed].....yeah that flat pass from Morne is the one positive I have seen from him in the last 5 years.......it 1 to Morne 100 to the opposition......start Morne I say!!!!!!!!!

I did not swear....you know the word I used. I didn't expect it to be removed !!
I started learning the language when I was a kid, I went out with a South African, and then I did get a few snippets from some of the posters off the old site a few years ago. Spook was going to teach me
But I remember some things and that is one phrase that stuck.....in fact, I used it a couple of weeks ago !
But that is about my limit now. I remember some words, but putting them into sentences is another kettle of fish entirely

I am, however, aware, that many words do not translate from the language into English. It is nuanced like that.
Which is why the phrase Ceradyne wrote would never be translated, I am sure of it. Nor would it be in a Dictionary. Like he said to Mike the other day when he said something about a looking up a word.
Or I could be wrong. Not for the first time !

Becs, I did not actually made that up with the sole purpose of writing something that Google translate cannot figure out. After I typed it, I checked what Google Translate would do with it and found that, coincidently, it just does not work. It is always difficult to translate from Afrikaans to English where a diminutive is involved.

The expression that I used comes from a custom in South African primary schools were the "reward" kids by sticking a little star on their forwards for something well done.

In Afrikaans the diminutive is done by adding -tjie or in some cases -jie at the end. In some cases, like "ster" you have to add "re" to get to "sterretjie". This is normally the case with words ending in an "r", like "kar" (car)  that becomes "karretjie".

Google Translate sees "sterretjie" as a "tern" which is a bird.

Beenbag in 2004 barry was our key player. he had a great pass and even used the boot to great effect to turn defences around man we were frikin lethal ball in hand that year and barry was a big reason why. jaco was never a great 10 but with a good 12 next to him he was effective playing an attacking game. when jean came in the whole attacking game fell apart but was kept together coz the defence held firm and there were no other options.. remember that ettiene botha died that year and the only other option was wynand in 2006 so he was never there because he was so great but because he was the only option at the time hat could defend well. man the 2006 england test we lost was a great demonstration of what im saying... jean gets a gap to hit and he goes through but completely ignores akona screaming for the ball down the touchline and gets turned over. it was a certain try! ad we ended up losing the game by less than 7 points. he does that all the time. look at the 2007 samoa test in the world cup we were on the ropes bud untiol frans came on. he wasnt just better individually but he combined well with butch and the combo flurrished. no 10 has EVER had a succesful combo with jean on attack... not a sngle one!

and dont get me started on his habbit of getting turned over. a key stuff up in 2008 was him! turning over nearly half the ball he got and missing lots of tackles. yeah thats when it started to get really bad. look at 2009 stats he was again a weakness and we nearly got stuffed by turnovers thatallowed opposition to breakout deep into our half. if we didnt dominate territory we woould have been fucked! yeah its all their peeps. to anyone who gives a shi-t about the truth.

@Gonzo. We were well on our way to beating the ABs at Christchurh in 2004 and that was, IIRC, started after great work by De Wet Barry that saw us score within minutes of teh start of the game and one stupid line-out decision, right at the death sealed our fate. We were close to their goal line when we decided to throw deep and the ABs turned it over to score a try and win by 23-21.

Against Aus we were also 9 minutes away from victory when Clyde Rathbone scored. Before that we were also in front after some great work by Barry.

There were no match stats in 2004 but I found this two pieces about the two games, mentioned above:

Last-gasp Howlett seals it for New Zealand Scrum.com July 24, 2004

The match got off to as dramatic a start as any in the illustrious history between the sides as South Africa touched down after just 23 seconds. Skipper John Smit snatched a loose ball when Justin Marshall was nowhere to be seen at the base of a ruck. Centre De Wet Barry ran into space and off-loaded to Jean de Villiers, who had come in on an angle. Gwent Dragons fullback Percy Montgomery converted, his first of three two-pointers in the first half.
.
.
.
.

The Springboks' tackling was awesome and they neutralised the All Blacks' outside backs that way. (Barry was a big contributor to that tackling display) But penalties were inevitable conceded. New Zealand slowly chipped away and Carter obliged with two penalties. Then, in the final minute, the dam wall finally burst as the All Blacks patiently wore their opponents down through countless phases.

There were two set-piece incidents in the final seven minutes that kept the pressure on the Boks. First New Zealand turned their ball over with a powerful scrum - a feature of their game all night - and second South Africa threw a lineout ball over the top and failed to control the ball. (That was what led to Mills' try if I'm not mistaken.)

Last-gasp Wallabies deny Springboks Scrum.com July 31, 2004

Giteau and Montgomery traded penalties to leave the Springboks 19-18 up with 30 minutes to go. But the Wallabies were doing an excellent job of spoiling South Africa's lineout ball and manipulating their defence.

Larkham, in particular, was brilliant and named man of the match for his efforts. Fullback Chris Latham got in for a try after Larkham had skipped past Bok prop Eddie Andrews and floated a long pass to his left.

But White's Boks are made of stern stuff and, with less than 20 minutes to go, took the lead when Gaffie du Toit, on for De Villiers, chased down De Wet Barry's grubber and scored. Montgomery's conversion made it 26-23.

yeah thanks ceradyne it proves my memory aint so bad for an older guy hahahaah! exactly as i said. sad people dont want to give the guy credit. i know he fell away badly in 2005 but he was pretty good in 2004 in a way jean has never been. if you look up our loss against aus in our warmup game it was the gfinal straw for barry and joubert and jake axed them both and that was the beginning of jean nd fourie to shore up our defence and it was pretty strong throughout that year. peple were complaining in 2005 and 2006 that wwe only scored interceots but jean was the root of it all!

I think that they are/were two different players. From waht I can remember Barry was by far the better defender. Remember how he tackled the plaque off the Aussies' teeth in that final "Carel du Plessis" test before Mallett took over? Barry was also a better distributor of the ball, IMO .

Ican underatand the logic of our resident morons.   Mozart started a thread to malign - JJ and Serfontein and used stats when Serfontin played from the bench on the wing to prove his lies about him.
When challnehged to  produce the stats for the June tests - where Serfontein started at 12 - his normal position on the field f play and then argue the case accordingly - the coward ran for cover and refused to do anything of the nature.
Gonzo the Apemoron than thew his on bit in trying to divert the issue by attackng Jean de Villiers amd Dave remined him of his previous gaffe about De Wet Barry.   Thn a whole lot of diversions came about.
I fail to understand the logic of Gonzo the Apemoron though - what has what happened 10 years ago with completely different players have a bearing on what is happening in 2014?  Maybe it is easy though - all three resident morons live in the past and the present has no bearing on issues.

You know the drill. If you don't like it, then don't read it. In any case, if you look closely you will see that it is actually your big buddy, Sad Sack, who was responsible for  the Barry story being dragged in again. He discarded everything that Gonzo has said and is saying based on his view about De Wet Barry. He has never tried to debate the merit of Gonzo's arguments about Barry. His only point of reference is that he disagrees. He cannot even motivate why he disagree with him.

I find it interesting that you have no problem with your other buddy, ou Beenbal who also had some vague remark about Barry, also without trying to back it up?

Agreed Draad. Barry was a weapon. His tackling alone alongside Joubert put the Aussies  to the sword, in one test. It takes enormous guts to put in that many crash tackles. These fools all forget he was nominated for Bok player of the year in 2004 for his role in winning the TN. He lost to the emerging giant Schalk Burger.
