My wife asked this question about the original number sung by the Stones...in her searching psyche of Western women from her Russian upbringing...the complexes of Western interlect ...I think I understand it....Joan Baez stood for an extreme form...maybe Mozart is qualified to elaborate?

Well...Melanie told it emotionally in song...I can guarantee that most of you plebs will stand in awe of this song...

Not very complicated or mysterious at all. Keith Richards wrote the song about his girlfriend Linda Keith who left him for Jimi Hendrix and got involved in drugs.

thankyou RN but it's a lot deeper than that...I don't doubt you're probably right initially but although the Stones were basically a simple band like the beatles there was a certain brilliance in their implications...probably jagger/richards who was a ruffian and mutton head but had intelligence...linda keith was just a typical but it pertained to a female group thought of the time.

I think Melanie saw much depth into it and sung it with feeling...an expression of her self...although other songs were never on the par of this one...this is a classic and Melanie did it better than the Stones...who are still one my favourite groups
The song's lyrics concern an apparently free-spirited woman, with Jagger singing, "Who could hang a name on you?/When you change with every new day/Still I'm gonna miss you."
