WP end 11yr Currie Cup drought 27 October 2012, 16:53

Western Province ended their 11-year wait for a major trophy when they were crowned Currie Cup champions on Saturday night with a battling 25-18 victory over the Sharks in Durban.

In a thrilling exhibition at Kings Park, the home side largely dominated the first half until centre Juan de Jongh's late try – the only one of the game – enabled the visitors to take a 16-12 advantage at the break.

That appeared to shift the momentum, and after flyhalf Patrick Lambie, who kicked all the points for the home side, briefly put his team back in front, the outstanding Demetri Catrakilis slotted over two drop goals that sealed a thrilling win.

Province claimed their first title since 2001 when they beat the Sharks in the domestic final in Cape Town.

It was also the third straight final loss for the home side, who were beaten in last year's domestic showpiece and the Super Rugby decider earlier this year.

Province took the lead inside the opening three minutes when Springbok flanker Willem Alberts was penalised for side entry, allowing number 10 Catrakilis to pop over the first points.

Lambie hit back for his side moments later when the visitors were punished for an accidental offside.

The frantic early pace continued and it took a superb last ditch tackle from Bryan Habana to deny JP Pietersen from scoring after Paul Jordaan cut through and passed inside.

The hosts went ahead after 13 minutes via another Lambie penalty, awarded when a struggling Habana, who subsequently went off injured, slowed the ball down.

Province then got on the front foot for the first time in the game, but Pietersen intercepted and booted forward as the Sharks won another penalty.

Lambie extended the lead to six points midway through the opening period, before adding another straight after a fierce scrum by his forwards.

A Jannie du Plessis shoulder charge offered Province a chance to stay in touch and Joe Pietersen, who replaced Habana, knocked over a tricky kick from near the halfway line.

That sparked some life into the Capetonians and they went ahead through a converted try, scored by De Jongh after he escaped a few half-tackles, side-stepped Lwazi Mvovo and ran in under the posts.

Catrakilis added his second penalty after the hooter had sounded to give Province a four-point advantage at the interval.

That was cut to one point straight after the break, thanks to another powerful scrum by the Sharks forwards and a fifth successful Lambie penalty.

Plumtree's men threw everything forward for the next 10 minutes, but failed to come away with a try in the face of a dogged visiting defence.

They did take the lead when Province failed to roll away and Lambie sent over a penalty, although another Catrakilis effort shifted the advantage once again.

The young Province flyhalf then sealed the win with two drop goals as the visitors were crowned worthy winners.

SCORERS

SHARKS –Penalties: Patrick Lambie(6)

WESTERN PROVINCE – Try: Juan de Jongh. Conversion: Demetri Catrakillis. Drop Goals: Demetri Ctarakillis(2). Penalties: Demetri Catrakillis(3), Joe Pietersen

welldone WP the best team won. I must say that when the final whisle went I did not feel very unhappy the Sharks lost although it would have been nice to have got that try at the end. Great cover defence by Joe Pieterson. He made up for that blunder he made with the high ball in the semi against the Sharks.

Thanks SharkBok!

What a game!! Joe Pieterson saves the day. My heart stopped for a second there.

I thought Sinclair had a decent game off the bench. :)

Ha ha nah bro, he is a hardened WP man. He was the founder of the "conference trophy" system in rugby that no one has seen. He will no doubt be happy that his boys hold a real trophy now and not just the elusive "conference trophy!"

Beeno, it was you that said in one of your much older posts after the Dunedin test. "I dont judge a game on the scoreboard." You meant that although the AB's won on the board, the Boks were the better team and they must blame their kicking woes for the loss.. I fully agree with you there.

Now what I want to ask is, do you still consider WP/Stormers to be a better team than the Sharks even though the Sharks are 4 from 6 against them this year?

first off congrats for the WP well done well played. the sharks boys played like some of them had one foot on the plane to europe already. the sharks lacked penetration on attack and looked very flat. might have been to much rugby but they just did not look up to it. the wp was just more up for it on the day.

still a great year 2 finals in all the major comps is not something to feel bad about. that being said next year can be a great year for the sharks....

now finally the wp has a major cup and just move on this there lives

I guess boglog i will have to agree to disagree with both you and beano on that one.

Finishing a movement and coming away with the points is what separates the very good journeymen teams and the very clinical and efficient teams. just because the bokkee can put together 50 phases and not go anywhere or get white line fever and turn the ball over everytime does not make them the better team.

Still winning the game with next to no ball and keeping the opposition scoreless for an entire half really does when you read the history books in 10 years time
