As the All Blacks gear up for a transformative season under the guidance of Dave Rennie, the legendary scrum-half Aaron Smith shared some keen insights into what might be expected from the new head coach. Smith, who has experienced Rennie's coaching philosophy both as a young player and more recently as a professional, praises his former coach's approach, anticipating a shift towards a more attacking style of play. This comes as a refreshing change from the more conservative tactics of his predecessor, Scott Robertson. Rennie, known for his dynamic coaching stints with the Wallabies, Glasgow Warriors, and Chiefs, is set to lead New Zealand in the upcoming Nations Championship against formidable teams like France, Italy, and Ireland.

Smith, who has been playing for Toyota Verblitz in Japan, recalls the significant impact Rennie had on his early career and how that extended into their professional encounters. "The thing with Rens is his really attacking mindset kind of footy. He promotes your players to express yourselves, see space and push the boundaries," Smith explained in an interview with Sport Nation. He highlighted Rennie's dual approach of sternness paired with motivation, which uniquely resonates with players at an individual level.

"He's a stern coach, he’s a great motivator and he had a way of talking to each player on a level that I found unique,"

Rennie's method of clear and direct feedback was something Smith came to appreciate more deeply over time. This transparency helps players understand their roles and contributions to the team clearly, an aspect of Rennie's coaching that Smith values highly.

The evolving nature of rugby into a game dominated by defensive strategies is something Rennie seems prepared to tackle head-on. Smith's experiences against Rennie’s Kobelco Kobe Steelers highlighted an aggressive, high-tempo game plan that focuses on maintaining ball movement and exploiting spatial advantages. "Any momentum they got they would go through the same area and keep hammering at it. It’s really hard to stop," Smith noted, underscoring the effectiveness of Rennie's strategy.

"One of Rens’ big things and it doesn’t get talked about enough is probably his mindset at ruck time,"

Smith also pointed out an underrated aspect of Rennie’s coaching—his focus on ruck engagements. This aggressive ruck strategy is a testament to Rennie’s philosophy of seizing every possible advantage, a mentality that could redefine how the All Blacks approach the breakdowns.

As the All Blacks embark on their journey under Dave Rennie's leadership, the rugby world watches with anticipation. Will this be the beginning of a new era for one of the most storied teams in rugby history? Only time will tell, but with Rennie at the helm, the narrative is sure to be compelling.
