The Sharks have recently disclosed that Aphelele Fassi, a cherished member of the Springboks, will be departing the franchise to embrace an enriching stint in Japan, following the path of international player movements seen recently in rugby. However, fans can look forward to his return to the Durban-based team for the 2027/28 United Rugby Championship season.
Fassi, at 28, has committed to a new contract with the Sharks that intriguingly includes a season-long sojourn in Japan during the 2026/27 season. He will join a yet-to-be-named Japanese team after fulfilling his international duties this year. "As part of Aphelele Fassi’s renewed contract with the Sharks, he will take up an exciting opportunity in Japan for the 2026/27 season following the conclusion of his Springbok commitments," the club shared on their social media platforms.
"Having grown through the Sharks system since joining out of school in 2018, Aphelele has become a proud product of the Sharks family. This opportunity will allow him to experience a new rugby environment, embrace a different culture and continue growing both on and off the field,"
The narrative of South African players taking temporary leaves for international exposure isn't new, with Marcell Coetzee and Kurt-Lee Arendse of the Bulls having previously taken similar routes. The Sharks have similarly facilitated this growth model for stars like Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi.
The global rugby scene shows a similar trend, with players like Wallabies' Angus Bell and Len Ikitau, and several All Blacks including Jordie Barrett and Ardie Savea, taking sabbaticals to enrich their playing experience and skills.
While Fassi's temporary exit will leave big shoes to fill, it opens the door for emerging talents such as Zekhethelo Siyaya and Jaco Williams, who has recently been called up to the Springboks squad. The depth in the full-back position is further bolstered by the likes of Gianni Lombard, Jordan Hendrikse, and Yaw Penxe, ensuring the Sharks remain competitive.
As the Sharks prepare for the upcoming season, they welcome back Thomas du Toit from a successful stint at Bath, alongside fellow Springboks Stephan Lewies and Ivan van Zyl. New signings Hendre Stassen, Nemo Roelofse, Murray Korster, Donovan Don, and Junior Boks captain Siphosethu Mnebelele are poised to make their mark, enriching the team's dynamics and readiness for the challenges ahead.
The evolving landscape of rugby, where players increasingly cross borders for diverse playing experiences, reflects not just in individual growth but also in the strategic maneuvers clubs and nations undertake to stay at the forefront of the sport. As Fassi embarks on this new chapter, both he and the Sharks look forward to the enriched perspectives and skills he will bring back to Durban.
