JP Pietersen is all in on the hype train for Durban's newest rugby prodigies, declaring that the future of the Sharks looks incredibly promising after their recent showcase in Gqeberha. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium played host to a rugby spectacle where the young Sharks were not just participating but dominating, featuring heavily in both the Springboks and South Africa A teams.
During a week where South African rugby talents were on full display, Pietersen couldn't hide his excitement. "That was almost the whole Sharks team on show. It was great to see our guys given exposure at international level, and that would have given them the confidence that they belong there," he commented. The optimism doesn't stop there; despite a disappointing end to their Vodacom URC campaign where the playoffs remained just out of reach, the Sharks showed significant promise, particularly in their last three home games. They not only played, they played to impress, with victories over Munster, Benetton, and Zebre.
"I always knew Vusi was going to be good, but to perform like that. His composure and the way he ran the show is what you want from your flyhalf – to know when to pass, when to kick. It was beautiful to see that he is ready, and it gives me extra confidence."
Flyhalf Vusi Moyo, in particular, stood out with his stellar performance last Saturday, earning him a spot in the Springbok squad for the upcoming Nations Championship, alongside teammate Jaco Williams. Moyo’s calm under pressure and his ability to control the game were crucial, showcasing that he is more than ready to take on the international stage.
With such talent rising through the ranks, the Sharks' future indeed seems to be in capable hands. Pietersen’s pride in his team's young stars is palpable, and their recent performances give every indication that they are set to become the new face of Durban’s rugby scene, ready to make waves both locally and internationally.
