On the brink of the 2026 Junior World Championship in Georgia, Siphosethu Mnebelele found himself thrust into the spotlight as the newly minted captain of the Junior Boks. The hooker, who stepped up to fill the position after Riley Norton's elevation to the Springboks’ Nations Championship squad, expressed a mix of astonishment and readiness at Cape Town International Airport prior to the team's departure.

“It was actually unreal,” Mnebelele recounted the moment Coach Kevin Foote announced his captaincy right before a practice session. The team's reaction was overwhelmingly positive, fueling his confidence. “

'I’m ready to take these guys to war.'

” he declared, signaling his readiness to lead with vigor.

The Junior Boks are set to kick off their campaign against Uruguay at Avchala Stadium this Saturday, followed by matches against Wales and Georgia in Pool A. The stakes are high, but the recent promotions of teammates Norton and flyhalf Vusi Moyo to the senior squad have ignited a fierce motivation within the team.

“I saw how much hard work Riley and Vusi put in to get where they are now,” Mnebelele said. “

'I believe 100% that it makes you realise as a team, and as individuals, that you too can make it into the Springbok team.'

A product of King Edward VII School (KES), Mnebelele also had the opportunity to spend time with another hooker, Malcolm Mark, at the Bok camp. Mark’s influence on him was profound. “Malcolm is a role model for me,” he admitted. “He plays the kind of game I strive for.”

As the Junior Boks brace themselves for the challenges ahead in Georgia, their new captain’s blend of awe and assurance seems just the right mix to steer his teammates through the battles on the horizon. With eyes firmly set on future Springbok jerseys, Mnebelele’s leadership is poised to be a cornerstone of their campaign.
