The Newcastle Red Bulls have announced a significant addition to their roster for the 2026/27 PREM Rugby season, securing the services of South African winger Werner Kok. The seasoned 33-year-old athlete transitions to the North East club following his tenure with Ulster, signing a one-year contract. Kok's recruitment is particularly noteworthy amidst the swirling rumors that Fehi Fineanganofo might withdraw from his Newcastle deal after being called up to the All Blacks squad by Dave Rennie for the Nations Championship.

Kok arrives with an impressive résumé, distinguished by his performance in both the traditional 15-man format and the sevens circuit. His time with the BlitzBoks was marked by individual accolades such as the World Sevens Player of the Year and team successes including a Commonwealth Games gold and an Olympic bronze medal. At the club level, his prowess was evident through his scoring of 29 tries across 76 URC appearances for both the Sharks and Ulster.

"I’m really excited to be joining Newcastle Red Bulls and the Gallagher PREM. I know there have been a lot of changes made but with that comes a fresh start, and I am really excited to be part of it. I hope to contribute in building a great team culture, bringing my energy and work rate, and I really just want to give my everything for the team. It’s a new town and a new adventure, and I really look forward to getting to know the people of Newcastle and the fans around the stadium."

The Newcastle head coach, Dan McFarland, expressed his enthusiasm about Kok's signing, highlighting his proven track record and the skills he brings to the team. "Werner is a proven try-scorer and highly experienced winger who will complement an already-exciting group of back-three players. He is technically excellent around the contact area, a ruthless finisher and plays with the kind of high energy, physicality, and optimism that we as a group want to develop," McFarland noted.

With the pre-season on the horizon, the anticipation within the Newcastle camp is palpable. Kok's integration into the team is seen as a crucial element in the Red Bulls' strategy to invigorate their squad, aligning with new tactical directions and fostering a dynamic team culture. His signing marks him as the 31st player to join the squad, following notable players like Hoskins Sotutu, Raffi Quirke, Elliot Millar Mills, Franco Molina, and Chris Harris. The Red Bulls community and fans are eager to see how his extensive experience and vibrant playing style will translate into success in the upcoming season.
