Rassie Keeps Door Open for Bok Veterans

Rassie Erasmus, the Springbok head coach, hasn't shut the door on seasoned players like Faf de Klerk and Vincent Koch, despite their omission from the current 46-man squad for the Nations Championship. Both players, who recently participated in a two-week Bok training camp, will instead lace up their boots for the Barbarians in an upcoming clash against Wales at Twickenham.

De Klerk, who made a bench appearance against the Baa-Baas at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, found himself sidelined for the Nations Championship, with Erasmus favoring Cobus Reinach, Grant Williams, Embrose Papier, and Herschel Jantjies as his quartet of scrumhalves. The Springboks are set to kick off their campaign against England at Ellis Park next Saturday.

"I think there’s a much longer list than just Faf and Vincent," Erasmus pointed out, referencing other notable absentees such as Bongi Mbonambi, Jaden Hendrikse, and several others. He explained, "Every player’s situation is different."

"We always like to have four nines in our squad. We feel more comfortable with that,"

Erasmus emphasized the strategic decision behind his selection. "Cobus is back and he’s an experienced guy at 35. We generally like one of our scrumhalves to be a senior player who can guide the younger guys," he added.

"We know what Faf can do. We’ve worked with him, we’ve trained with him and we know his value. We’ve always rated Herschel Jantjies and now we want to have a proper look at him,"

Looking ahead, the dynamic within the squad could change post-July Tests. "There are another 15 to 17 players who are injured, being rested, or who may be better suited to specific matches later in the campaign," Erasmus revealed, indicating potential shifts in the team composition.

The coach also shared that the lineup for the upcoming match against England has been set, with strategic plans already in place for subsequent games against Scotland and Wales. This meticulous planning underscores the Boks’ determination to optimize their roster throughout the Nations Championship.

As the Boks gear up for a bruising encounter with England at Ellis Park, it's clear that strategic foresight and player management will play pivotal roles in their campaign.
