In a bold move that has the rugby world buzzing, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has opted for youth over experience by selecting Junior Boks captain Riley Norton for the upcoming Nations Championship, sidelining the seasoned JJ van der Mescht. The decision came after Norton's standout performance during a recent test match, prompting Erasmus to offer insights into his choice.

Norton, just 20, was extracted from the SA U20 team set to compete in Georgia, following his compelling full-game play in the Boks’ resounding 80-31 victory over the Barbarians at Gqeberha. Meanwhile, van der Mescht, 27, played a supporting role from the bench in Northampton Saints’ triumph over Exeter Chiefs in the English Premiership clash at Twickenham.

Erasmus was quick to clarify that van der Mescht's exclusion should not be seen as a negative reflection of his capabilities.

"We all think JJ is a wonderful player. It’s not to say that JJ is not a player for the future, but what we do currently probably suits what Riley gives us,”

Erasmus explained. The coach highlighted the contrasting styles of the two locks: Norton, the agile lineout caller, and van der Mescht, the formidable direct player, noting that team strategy for specific matches influenced his selection.

The decision also stemmed from logistical and integration perspectives.

"Riley is totally different. He’s in our system and JJ’s been away for a really long time,”

Erasmus noted, adding that van der Mescht's recent interactions with the team had been virtual, which contrasts sharply with Norton's hands-on involvement through the national team's structures.

Erasmus remains open to recalling veteran players when necessary, emphasizing strategic needs over personal preferences. "Hopefully in future, when we need somebody like that, we can press his number and get him into the squad," he stated, leaving the door ajar for van der Mescht and others in similar positions.

This decision not only highlights Erasmus's forward-thinking approach but also sets the stage for what fans can expect in terms of team dynamics and player utilization moving forward. As the Nations Championship looms, all eyes will be on young Norton to see if he can translate his U20 form to the senior stage under the high stakes of international competition.
