In a move that has both shocked and intrigued the rugby world, Coach Dave Rennie made a decisive mark with his first All Blacks squad selection, sidelining seasoned pro Rieko Ioane while handing Hurricanes sensation Fehi Fineanganofo his first All Blacks jersey. The announcement followed a standout Super Rugby Pacific season for Fineanganofo, contrasting sharply with Ioane's unexpected omission despite his recent championship win with Leinster in the URC final.

Rennie's decision has sparked considerable discussion, especially given Ioane's significant contributions on the field. "Obviously Rieks is still in Ireland," Rennie explained in a conversation with Sky Sport, highlighting the logistical challenges but also hinting at future possibilities.

"We had a conversation with him and guys like Du’Plessis [Kirifi] this morning and so on. They are really disappointed, they want to be a part of it,"

Rennie shared, reflecting the players' sentiments.

Despite Ioane's current absence from the squad, Rennie left a sliver of hope for the versatile player's involvement in future tours.

"Rieks has gone pretty well in recent weeks. He has played a bit of centre and wing and what we know with 44 going to South Africa we are going to bring another 10 in. His versatility means he is a strong chance to go there,"

he added, suggesting that Ioane's adaptability across positions could be a key asset for the upcoming tour.

Meanwhile, Fineanganofo's inclusion shines as a testament to seizing opportunities. Tying as the joint leading try-scorer of the Super Rugby Pacific season, his performance was too compelling to overlook. "I think that is the process that he is going through," Rennie said regarding Fineanganofo's recent contract with Newcastle. "What we know is that he is contracted here until November. His form has been irresistible and we are keen to name him," Rennie stated, acknowledging the wing’s outstanding form.

The All Blacks are gearing up under Rennie's leadership with an eye for both performance and strategic future planning. As the squad prepares for their tour, all eyes will be on how these selections play out on the international stage.
