When Siya Kolisi first captained the Springboks against England at Ellis Park on June 9, 2018, it was a landmark event marred by an early tactical nightmare. The first black African Test captain for the Springboks, Kolisi experienced what could only be described as a baptism by fire when England quickly racked up a 24-3 lead. Reflecting on that day, Kolisi said, "I remember it was a very tough and emotional game." He admitted the pressure initially overwhelmed him, but the support from his team was pivotal.
The Boks, however, staged a dramatic turnaround to clinch the game 42-39, demonstrating resilience that would characterize Kolisi's leadership. Looking back, Kolisi views his rocky start as a crucial learning curve. "That was where I actually learned how to use the people around me," he revealed. During the game's critical moment, with England leading by 21 points, a candid Kolisi turned to his teammates under the posts, confessing, "I have no answers." It was a moment of vulnerability that shaped his captaincy philosophy.
"I said: 'I have no answers.' Then I looked at the guy next to me and asked: 'Do you have something to say?'"
The structures laid out by then newly appointed coach Rassie Erasmus and defence coach Jacques Nienaber were also instrumental. "We were learning a new defensive system and there was a lot happening [that day]," Kolisi noted, appreciating the support system that helped him navigate his initial challenges.
Erasmus's faith in Kolisi, stemming from a relationship that began when the captain was just 18, was crucial. "Rassie has known me since I was 18 years old. He knew I would struggle at the beginning and he put systems in place that allowed me to focus on what I needed to do," Kolisi explained.
Years after that fateful match, Kolisi has not only matured into a formidable leader but also a symbol of triumph and unity in sport, leading the Springboks to multiple Rugby World Cup victories. Reflecting on his journey, Kolisi regards his debut as a watershed moment, saying, "It was a huge learning opportunity for me and it obviously changed my life." His experiences now serve to guide newer members stepping into leadership roles, ensuring the legacy of resilience and teamwork continues within the team.
