Man-made space travel and colonisation is important for many reasons.
1.) Life may be very rare in the universe. If there was a man-made or natural disaster like an Astroid it could kill all of life on Earth. If Mars was colonised - it would ensure the continuation of life (human and the animal kingdom). This could allow further intelligent life to evolve. (or perhaps more intelligent).

2.) Natural Resources are finite. Jupiter has a moon that has more natural assets than the whole of the earth.
3) Travel to other stars systems could help deal with population growth, and fuel further understanding of science and technology.

Beenz, for the same reason we live in houses and drive cars....Caves and horses are great, but not really suited for modern life.

Japan  landed rovers(hopping cylinders) on an asteroid and then a spacecraft to collect samples recently. Now apparently they will have rock samples back on earth by 2020.
This asteroid circles somewhere between earth and mars .This asteroid is 300m km from earth but the spacecraft travelled 3.2bn km around the sun for more than 3 years.

these are the rovers.

Draad and Sharkbok we do not have remotely the technology to travel more than what amounts to inches away from the earth. The distances to other star system are vast and it would take ages to get there.

The transport costs are monumental even if you were talking about the moon.

Take it from Beeno. We are a long way from doing any serious space travel. Even the short hop to Mars is a huge challenge especially if you plan on returning. Maybe ou rooibozo would consider volunteering! One way ticket of course.

Indeed Beenz there isn't a viable way to travel outside our solar system...yet....small steps...

Imagine where we would have been if Columbus or Dias were that pessimistic about sea travel a few centuries ago ?

The rate of technological development is speeding up. In 100 years it will be easy to get to Mars and back. The first rockets were more mechanical, whereas the future ones will be with AI.
