Yes Becs, I can understand that.

My late father was in the Cape Town Highlanders during the WW2 and was wounded in the desert when German Dive Bombers (Stukas) shot a convoy he was travelling in .

He look so dashing in the photos I have in his kilted dress. He was one of the fortunate ones, only a 303 bullet through his groin and was sent home to Addington Hospital...when he recovered he did not go back as the war was in the last lap but was put in charge of an Italian prisoner of war camp just outside Pietermaritzburg in Natal.

When I was a boy I remember that we used used to have Pipes and Drums in the Botanical gardens...in the sixties to the early eighties...it was very popular...at one stage Durban used to have a tattoo...the Durban Tattoo. It's very sad.now...all those great things have gone now in SA. I grew up to love the pipes and drums, especially Scotland The Brave and many others.

I saw the Edinburgh tattoo as I've been to Scotland twice in my life.

Ah so you have Scots blood then ?

I suppose you father could be deemed fortunate to have survived an attack like that. My late grandfather always said it was cowardly the way the German bombers attacked the convoys....of soldiers and civilians.

The Blair government tried to get rid of the Edinburgh Tattoo but there was a bit of an outcry at that, so it remains, I think it’s a little scaled down to the way it used to be but it’s still a fixture.

I’ve never been to Scotland so you’ve outdone me there !

My mum was from just outside of Edinburgh and I have lots of family there but the Edinburgh Military Tattoo does nothing for me. Brass bands and gaudy pageantry rank with country music and rap, rather insert metal pins into my eyes.

Not saying these people aren't talented but just not my thing.

Now a lone piper will give me goose bumps but minutes not hours of it thanks

At Becs, no my fathers ancestry was Irish from Cork originally Grandad and great granddad and granny from France. On mum's side they were pure Scots, father and mother...the MacGregor 's and Wilson'.s..1820 Settler stock in Natal Province.

But as I said the love of pipes is in both people...in fact I was told that the pipes developed first in Eire...don't know if this is correct and open to correction. But whiskey...lol is usually  enjoyed by both.

My father has Irish ancestry as well, born in England to Irish stock.

I can say I really have no love of the pipes or whiskey, Seb !!
