Can you music loving fans give 2 songs that are your favourites.
I wish I had the opportunity to see them both Mozart. What a rare priviledge...simply the best in their department...sadly both died fairly early. We wanted to see Dmitri in Moscow but at the time was completely sold out.
Going off in another completely different catergory...Soul Music...I saw Percy Sledge during 2 shows in Cape Town, way back...first year at Varsity.
An older friend of mine who worked for Samwac (cannot remember if it was correct...had something to do with VW at the time was staying at the President Hotel in Sea Point when Percy and his ontourage which coincided with his visit.
To cut the story short, Ralph after having a wee too much instead of going to dinner made an outrageous suggestion that he invite Percy for a crayfish dinner. I said he was nuts but he got hold of him through the reception and he he said why not but in his suite.
So Ralph feeling foolishly extravagant and in a delightful disposition ordered a trolley full of West Coast Lobster for Mr Sledge's room and we were invited to join.
So we did, there was Percy, his half-brother William Wood, Stella Star, a female singer and another oke, Tim Saunders who was part the arrangement.
We had a party in the apartheid days and I remember Percy raving about Taylers sherry which he quaffed in serious doses. The result was that we were too invited as guests at the Luxurama and Three Arts...we had to sit backstage however because of apartheid.
"Best Boer War Song.....there was only one and it's magnificent.... Sarie Marais. "
I'm not sure if I posted this on here before but Sarie Marais is the official march of the French Foreign Legion as well as the British Royal Marines.
Freddy!!! Damn, that fag was good! ..:"This is a rock band, not the Village People" Classic quote from the movie. Wonder if it's true .
His "Live Aid" and "Live at Wembly" performances were epic!
But THIS:
We used to play Erika in the school cadet band ad nauseam, Moz. Was a nice march, though.
The original German one.
The Afrikaans one.
Some of my favourites are Strauss’ Radetzky March and then , of course a whole host of Sousa’s marches. My favourite Sousa marches are probably The Thunderer, The Cotton King March, The Washington Post March and of course Semper Fidelis, the US Marine Corps march.
Other favourites are Colonel Bogey, The Drina March and The Pomp and Circumstance March.
Was Sarie Marais not the ZAR anthem at some stage?
,,
For Beeno
Hope I'm not wrecking the thread.
..
Vlag if you like that sort of thing, you probably like the Soldiers Chorus from Faust
Not a march.
Moz. In a way that reminds me of “Do you hear the people sing” from Les Misrables.
But here is one for all of you. Which two bands or artists would you most want to see live? Living or dead.
This gets even harder....thanks a lot Blou.
Well, I've been fortunate enough to see Maria Carey at Caeser's Palace, Bryan Ferry and the late Sammy Davis Junior, the latter I believe to be one of the biggest live performers ever. There were others like Dido, The Four Tops and Roberta Flack.
Would 100% have loved to have seen Elvis andTina Turner.
Should say no matter how good these guys are in the studio very few have a stage persona.
Moz
Wifey and I saw Les Mis in the West End as part of our RWC/ European tour. Awesome!
My favourite is The Phantom of ......we've seen it three times.
Queen with Freddy mu st have been at the top, but there are many good live performers...today still. Pink Floyd has massive shows. I'm hoping Aerosmith comes to my neck of the woods sometime.
and this one, for Red and Saf, just a peace offering LOL

Blue, not a massive fan of the band, but they have more than 3 good songs. The point is that they do massive live shows...The Stones too....Madonna and Pink might be worth the effort too. Not just the music, it's huge on stage productions .
Bob Seger and the silver bullet band, Gordon Lightfoot and oh yes just remembered Jim Croce...died in a plane crash before his career took off...but good songs like I've got a name...come to think of it one of my favourites at that time...there was poetry in songs and yes the name comes to mind, Paul Williams, good music like An old fashioned love song. Also did soundtracks, Phantom of the paradise, Bugsy Malone, A star is born.

When it comes to women singers, nothing beats Barbra Streisand, she can sing anything, with the Bee Gees, classics and just plain beautiful songs.
Aretha Franklin another great...soul.
When it comes to women singers, nothing beats Barbra Streisand...
Now you're talking.
Some comments about the above
Draad the SA Republics anthem was "Kent guy Dat Volk".
My Grandmother told us she grew up on the farm Blandsdrift besides the Gouritz River. Before the bridges were built - the first one in 1904 - the main road between Cape Town and PE ran over that farm - because of the drift sands in the River, She was a 14 year old in 1900 when a British regiment stopped before crossing the River, and my Great Grandfather Pienaar invited them to the House for refreshments. My grandmother and he sister decided to entertain them by music - so they played "Kent Guy dat Volk" on the house organ . The British General recognized the song and their father had to plea on his knees to stop them from burning down their home.
She had a note book in which all the songs of the time was recorded. I do not think anybody ever heard the following song:-
"Please come back to the red river valley
Please come back to our hearts Betty Sue
I'll be here in the red river valley
I'll be waiting my darling for you
Oh my darling I know you are leaving
Though you say it is just for awhile
But my darling you know I'll be grieving
For the sound of your voice & your smile
I have waited along time my darling
For the word that you never would say
Now I know that my dreams are all ending
For I know you are going away
Far away
Please come back to the red river valley
Please come back to our hearts Betty Sue
I'll be here in the red river valley
I'll be waiting my darling for you
I'll be waiting my darling for you"
Try the internet - maybe you would find a recording.

Ever heard of Pat Boone?
Mike, Pat Boone had a good voice: Friendly Persuasion, Moody River, You better come home Speedy Gonzalez and Bernadine.
He was a clean living and decent man...did a few films as well...had a very pretty daughter Debbie.
Our old music master at Maritzburg College Ernie Hartley got to know him well as he was involved in the background with the music accompliment when he toured SA in the sixties/seventies.
Ernie was a purist that hated pop but he said Pat Boone sung well and his music was good...something he could never say for Elvis and those popular at the time.
Talking about Women Singers have you ever heard such a powerful voice like this coming from a 14 year old...Brenda Lee
A child wonder...never been another
https://youtu.be/r-TkjEdB1kE
Cloudy, Brenda Lee sang that song just before her 14th birthday and she sang long before that...but that was her first big hit, she sang that in Paris.
Yes Cloudy...your clip... a beautiful voice...a cute little girl...very mature, no doubt she will go far. Yes, I agree with you, she hits some high notes.
No Cloudy, I haven't. I will google the name and see how he performs.
Listened to a number, he's gospel like Josh Groban. He's good but I will listen to more when I have a break.
I enjoy gospel very much if it's sung well with the correct words
Really good thanks Cloudy. Thanks for that.
JD Sumner...did not know that Elvis bit...Elvis's death was so uncalled for...He knew the Lord I believe this was genuine but it seems that unnatural enviroment that encompassed his life cost him everything he loved.
Some of Elvis's gospel songs like "Crying in the Chapel" are very moving.

I'm surprised, Plum ... I thought you'd be into that brain damage shit that Xavi likes, where screaming into a mic like a demon is regarded as "music" ... haaaaaahahahahahahaaa.
The music of this day cannot compare to what we had in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
What can compare to Phil Colins' "in the air tonight" or Bob Dylan's "things have changed" or the Temptations "my lady soul" ... ?
How about Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks 'stop dragging my heart around" or the Eagles with their "hotel california" ... ?
Nah ... there is no comparison.
Like you said ... there's a lot more shit around these days.
Some choice language but a good sing song
