Seeing the democrats kneeling in their clown outfits to the memory of a career criminal, I decided to see how black cops are doing in the line of duty with regards to getting killed and why they're not honored like this.

In Google, searching for "black police officers killed" exclusively gets you results about the opposite - people killed by police. Likewise Bing. 3 Pages in and not a single result about cops getting killed, only people killed by them.

Duckduckgo, on the other hand, returns as its very first result for that query a piece about law enforcement line of duty deaths.

Surely it can't be that hard, Google and Bing? The manipulation is clear.

I searched Google with the exact same criteria and I get plenty hits on black police officers killed.

Put your same keywords inside quotes when you search. That always gives you a more accurate result.

Yeah adding "line of duty" also produces better results. Man, I should find better things to with my time

Pakie, I have been monitoring this for a while. I use my phone for searching quite a lot. It’s and iPhone, so my browser that I use the most is obviously Safari, but I have set it up to use DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. I also have both the Chrome and the DuckDuckGo apps. As soon as I notice dodgy search results on Safari, I go to the DuckDuckGo app. I seldom use Chrome.

I mainly use Chrome to access my bookmarks, that I have on my laptop, on Chrome.

DuckDuckGo seems to...... let’s say their algorithms seems less dodgy.

Google is a lot less dodgy if you use features like quotes, plus sign and minus sign.

In the example above, if yo u do Pakie's search without the quotes, Google is searching for hits with the words "black" OR "officers". As soon as you put quotes around the whole thing Google is looking for those specific words all being present in that exact order.

Basically I'm saying Google is not as biased or dodgy as the alt-right conspiracy theorists make out, they just don't know how to use the features properly. I've never tried DDG or any of the others and I only use Google as a search engine but in most cases I'll look on Wikipedia first.

I agree and I was going to address it but it slipped my mind. One has to be familiar with all those “tricks of the trade”. I often use the quotes but it still makes it questionable as to why it has become necessary to do that lately. It never was like this.

DuckDuckGo can give you broader results without using special tools, so to speak.

My only issue with DuckDuckGo is that it sometimes seems as though they sometimes struggle to “understand“ that you are looking for results outside of the USA. Even if you set the preferred location as not USA, ie the UK.

". . . but it still makes it questionable as to why it has become necessary to do that lately. It never was like this. "
The advanced search features have been around for as long as I can remember. They're not new.
They're also very simple and logical. As an example I was searching for memes of Bozo in his bunker the other day so I typed the words "Trump", "bunker" and "meme" (without quotes) into Google Images and got a whole bunch of hits for the TV character Archie Bunker, so I simply add a "-Archie" to my search and got exactly what I wanted. It's not rocket science and Google is by far the biggest, fastest and most comprehensive search engine available so why anyone would even consider DDG or other search engines is beyond me.
Google won the war of the Search Engines many years ago and their beaten competitors (Yahoo, Altavista, Ask Jeeves etc.) have either disappeared or branched into other services. Like it or not, Google is The One. When the name of your company becomes a commonly used verb, you've won.

I have found though that Google is very partial to pop culture. I remember a while back for example searching for something on WWII and Google returned pages of Call of Duty references and videos. Had to use Bing to find something on the actual historic event. Probably could have used a refined search or longer string, but Bing had no trouble producing a balanced result with the same input.

But yeah, I still mostly use Google. Tried DDG for a while last year but for local searches in particular it's not quite getting the job done yet.

All of that does not negate the use of their algorithms to manipulate search results. They have been caught out time and time again. Examples are available all over the show, including whistle blowers from inside the organisation.

"I remember a while back for example searching for something on WWII and Google returned pages of Call of Duty references and videos."
I'm guessing that would have been a good opportunity to use the minus sign to exclude "CoD" or "call" or "duty", but I bet you would have had much better success a lot quicker if you'd simply typed your historical event straight into Wikipedia.
I'm a huge fan of Wikipedia which I regard as the sum of human knowledge on a web page.
Coincidentally, I was using Google the other day to find exactly the opposite of what you were looking for. I was looking for a Call of Duty page that explained how to get past a certain scene in one of the campaigns. I was playing the Omaha Beach campaign in CoD and I had to clear out 5 bunkers. I cleared out the first 4 no problem using machine guns, shotguns and even a flame thrower that was really cool . . . but when I went into the 5th and final bunker some Nazi  grabbed me and I was in a hand-to-hand combat situation where my weapons were useless. The Nazi kept stabbing me in the gut with his bayonet every time I respawned no matter what buttons I pushed so I eventually went off to Google in a rage and searched for a walkthrough that told me what to do (I had to hit the specific button multiple times as quickly as I could) and I finally killed the Nazi by stabbing him in the head. It was the most satisfying thing I've ever done in a game! Thanks again, Google!

Most satisfying game moments...hmm, maybe in Dark Souls. The first boss (I think) is some big lout that you encounter on a bridge or wall or something. After beating me to a pulp on the first few tries, on the next one I was moving away and he was coming after me and somehow he stepped off the bridge/wall and fell to his death before he could even land a blow on me. I laughed until I cried.

Of course the game made me cry quite a bit more later on without the benefit of the laughing.

Not sure if you or any other posters ever played Starcraft but any time I managed to get my Ghost to successfully nuke the opposition buildings or forces was very satisfying.

I've never tried Dark Souls. PC or console?

Both. The first one was a console port to PC with some issues, that's the only one I've played so far. Brutally difficult, but rewarding in that you get a real sense of achievement when you figure out through endless trial and error how to beat the big baddies and manage it. Perhaps watch some gameplay on Youtube first to see if it's your cup of tea. I never finished the first one (although I did enjoy it at a masochistic level). I think they're up to #3 now.

Didn't play much Starcraft, I generally suck at RTS. Too much management, makes my brain go fuzzy.

Played COD 1 to death when it first came out. Always been interested in WW2 area when it comes to history, game and moves. I enjoyed COD when it came out but I'm not sure the first few games would hold up to today's standards.

Never played Starcraft 1 for more than a couple of minutes but I did play Starcraft 2 and its first expansion, good games.

Also played Dark Souls 1 on PC for a few hours, it was good but I just stopped playing it and never went back, what happens when you have two many games and not enough free time.

Played Sekiro from the makers of Dark Souls, finished that, was excellent.

Currently playing CnC Remastered, the gameplay is starting to show its age at least in the first game but my god is it worth the price of entry for the soundtrack alone.

@Plum

That PS5 demo was very impressive. My only drip was the lack of footprints in the sand as she walked but I'm nitpicking, overall extremely impressive and a good leap over what the current gen consoles are capable of.

On the new generation of console, scanned environments are much easier to transfer into world maps.

Pretty crazy shit. Most PS 4 games run at 30FPS currently. PS5 is gonna go up to 120FPS in 4K. Impressive stuff.

Star, if you like the Dark Souls genre, there is a new game on PS5 that I think you'll dig.

Godfall. That shit is crazy. It's made by the studio behind Borderlands and Halflife. Both being genre-defining titles on their respective console iterations. GearBox.

I won't add a link of that. Instead, here's me sniping people in Destiny 2 - pvp

@Plum

The Unreal Engine 5 demo used full quality scans that are normally reserved for movies.

PS5 will get no where near 4K 120FPS. For example that Unreal Engine 5 demo was running at 1440p at 30FPS. Nor did that demo feature any ray tracing.

Even the highest end PC's at the moment struggle in some games at 4K 60FPS even before factoring in feature like ray tracing.

The next generation of consoles will have a mixture of resolutions and frame rates. Your going still see a lot of up scaling from resolutions like 1440p and 1800p up to 4K using techniques like checker boarding still though I'm sure there will also be native 4K games as well. Resolution isn't everything anyway. You will also still see a mix of frame rates and some game running at 30fps.

The new hardware will be a considerable improvement and in particular the PS5 is meant to feature some newfangled storage technology that's faster than even NvMe storage you can get on PC. Loading time should be extremely fast on it.

I've been thinking about it and I have another very satisfying gaming moment that probably tops the others.
I was playing Gran Turismo Sport on the PS4 a few months ago. For those that don't know, Gran Turismo is a car racing simulator and within the game you have what they call Daily Races where you race against other players for points and in-game cash and other stuff. Anyway, I was in a Daily Race and I'd qualified on pole. The driver behind me on the grid was some Spanish guy and the Spanish are known to be the dirtiest drivers in GT, so I knew I'd have to brake as late as possible into the Senna curve (we were at Interlagos in Brazil) or get rammed from behind.
The race started and I braked as late as possible into the first corner but not late enough and the dirty Spanish pig rammed me off the track. I eventually recovered and got going again but I was now in about 6th or 7th place while the Spanish pig was leading. I was so hell-bent on getting my revenge that I drove better than ever and at the end of lap 3 out of 5, I'd worked my way past the other cars and I was in the leader's slipstream on the final straight. We were approaching the exact same corner where he rammed me and I got sweet revenge, doing exactly what he did to me, braking later than him, shoving him straight into the sand and using him as my brakes.
Satisfying as that was, that's not the reason I'm telling this story, it got better . . . but first I have to explain what "ghosting" means. There are various times in the game where your car or the other guy's car becomes ghosted, meaning you see the other car but you can drive right through it as if it wasn't there. If you're penalized during the race for dirty driving or for cutting corners, you're forced to serve a time penalty (anything between 0.5 and 5 seconds depending on what you did wrong) and when you serve that penalty your car becomes temporarily ghosted. Also, if you brake for no reason half way down the straight you'll become ghosted and the guy behind you will power past you as if you weren't there, he won't have to swerve to avoid you or anything. Ghosting is particularly useful during a qualifying session or a time trial when your best lap will be recorded as a ghost car so you can see exactly what lines you took and where you braked on your best lap, and you know that if you can beat your ghost car you'll be improving your time. Okay, so that's what I mean by a ghost car.
Back to my story, I was now in the lead on lap 4 out of 5 and I looked in my rear view mirror to see how far the Spanish pig was behind me but I didn't see him at all. The 3rd placed driver was now 2nd and my enemy was nowhere in sight. I looked at the rankings on the side of the screen and I could see him dropping all the way back into last place. That's when I realized what he was doing. He was going to get his revenge by coming to a stop, waiting for me to come past on the last lap and ram me off the track. I could see on the mini-map which part of the track he was hiding and waiting for me . . . the long straight after the Senna curve just where the pit exit was. I started the last lap, took the Senna curve and accelerated into the long straight. I saw the Spanish pig start to accelerate and try bump me off the track and sure as nuts he was all ready to ram me . . . but he'd forgotten one thing, cars also get ghosted when the leaders lap them!
LMAO!
The idiot had waited a whole lap for me . . . lying in wait and biding his time . . .and when the moment finally came and he drove his car into me, he was ghosted and I drove right through him as if he wasn't there and went on to win the race comfortably while the embarrassed red-faced clown finished stone last more than a lap behind!
After the race you get to chat to the other drivers and I can tell you he had some strong words for me . . . it was all in Spanish but I could tell he wasn't wishing me a good day . . . while I just laughed at him and made him even angrier. A deeply satisfying and hilarious gaming moment for me!

Indeed. An option the PS4 didn't have.

- 60FPS is what it'll mostly run at on 4k. Anyway, 4k is not that important. Most competitive gamers choose frame rates over picture quality. 1080p is more than sufficient.

Still, my PS4 pro does some 4k games at 30FPS and many 1080p games at 60FPS.

The PS5 will be a big leap forward.

All browser-based after that.

These browsers based services had a rocky start to life but it is the future.

Quite nice though, all you'll need is a screen, wifi card and a controller.

Rooi,

I find racing games too boring.

Preferred Warcraft Reign of Chaos over Starcraft. Though I did play starcraft a bit.

Also, your story doesn't add up.

You are ghosted once lapped. You hadn't yet overtaken him. So if he was trying to get you to drive into him, you would hit him, as only once you got past would the ghosting occur.

Unless he let you past him at speed, then tried to catch up and ram you....which seems improbable.

"and when the moment finally came and he drove his car into me, he was ghosted and I drove right through him"

...unless the ghosting occurs before you actually lap them.

Get your act together.

No, you're just too stupid to understand the concept of ghosting and why they use it.

You get ghosted when you try obstruct the car behind you by braking in a non-braking area, you get ghosted when you ignore the track limits and take a short cut and you get ghosted when you're about to get lapped.

If you read my story without obsessing over finding a fault and just read it for what it is, you'll see the bit where I said I overtook him and he slowed down to a complete stop to wait for me to come past him again. It's there in the 5th paragraph.

Did you go check? Have you seen it now? Yes?

So, Plumchum, did you just miss it because you're not very good at reading or were you just too stupid to follow the sequence of events?

It's one of the two.

LMAO!

PS I liked the early Warcraft games. Not quite as good as Starcraft IMHO because Starcraft had a choice of 3 much more different races instead of 2 fairly similar ones as well as better graphics. Lost all interest in the Warcraft games after World of Warcraft when they turned it from a RTS game to a RPG. Age of Empires was another great RTS game.

I am currently switching between about 7 games at the moment, so I can choose what game I want to play based on what mood I am in.

I normally only play FPS (First Person Shooter) games, because I feel more interactive with the actual game, unless I am playing Tiger W oods Golf

By the way..... if you want a great mobile golf game, try the free "WGT Golf" game for pc and Android... the graphics are excellent and it has a nice chat function to speak to fellow SA players

Currently playing on PC:

Battlefield

Call Of Duty - Modern Warfare - Black Ops - WW2

Just Cause

Far Cry

Hitman Absolution

Sniper Ghost Warrior (What a legend of a game)

Crysis (What a legend of a game)

I decided to upgrade my laptop and finally just got the full on gaming laptop because it is just so much easier for me than carting the Xbox or PS around and having to connect to a TV... and with current games hitting 230GB in size.... it was about time, and I am more than happy.

Some other notable older games are:

Prototype 2

Splinter Cell

Rainbow 6

The same people that do not like Google, do not like the mainstream media. They are both fake news.
For the most part, Google does not organise content themselves using a conscious decision to "manipulate" reality- as the conspiracy theorists would suggest.
Instead, they let people organise the content. This is called organic, or natural rankings
Google measure people engagement with content- and allow the most popular content to rank the highest. They use hundreds of signals to measure engagement such as how long someone stays on a page, how many times they return to the page etc- compared to other similar pages.
If you search in Google Images for idiot, the top rankings (SERP's) are Donald Trump.
Trump has complained during most of his presidency about this.
More people think of Donald Trump as an idiot than any other person in the world- hence why he ranks number one.
It is very simple - the search engine that delivers the results which most people think are the most relevant (best) - is going to be the most popular search engine.
Let the happy clappies and conspiracists use Duck Go, or whatever piece of crap they can find.

The last BF I played was 3. Graphically it was excellent for its time but the single player campaign was pretty bland. Not really into the multiplayer shooters anymore.

Last Call of Duty I played was Advanced Warfare but I skipped a few before that. Just felt the series had stagnated and the formula was the same each time.

I think I own all 4 just cause games, though I think I only payed for JC2 and got the other 3 free in promotions. Never played any of them though. LOL

Far Cry, I loved the original back in 2004, thought 2 was good if not repetitive, lost my save file so never finished it. 3 was also good, I hear 4 and 5 are pretty much just more of the same as 3 and filled with Ubisoft open world bloat.

Hitman Absolution, is an okay game but a poor Hitman game, the latest Hitman games are excellent IMO.

Never played Ghost Warrior.

Crysis, just recently going through all 4 Crysis games. Crysis 1 is the best of them, just shame it it doesn't run great even on modern hardware due to lack of multicore CPU support and memory leaks in the final level. Great game though. The other Crysis games have there own strengths and run better but just aren't as good as the original. Hoping the forthcoming remaster fixes the issues with it.

Can't say I played Prototype 1 or 2.

Played a little Splinter Cell. Can't remember too much about it though.

Played a good lot of the older R6 games. Good times.

Thanks for the feedback Stav, nice to see someone else who has tried their hand at a few of the games I'm busy with, or have played already

Fully agree on the Crysis comments..... although I did enjoy all of them collectively

COD is quite repetitive, even with different stories, it basically just stays the same

Playing a bit of Far Cry 3 now to see what it's like before I go for the newer ones out, and I'm not too impressed to be honest, as it came with good..ish reviews

Just Cause is quite different to what I usually play, but I must say I am really enjoying the very different aspects of the game

I forgot to mention I am also playing Titanfall..... wow.... impressive......talk about something different..... especially the jumping aspects of the character and the character / machine composite in gameplay...… a bit unique for me, but cool

Try playing Prototype 2...… I never played one...…. it is quite impressive, I must say..... quite different to most other games, in style, gameplay, storyline etc etc

Root,

Here is the crucial info missing from your first attempt...

"you get ghosted when you're about to get lapped".

Which is different to getting ghosted once lapped.

There's a super fucking sad ghost car story that I know of.

A dad and son would a play racing game. Can't remember which. They would save their games and then load the save, which would be a ghost car and you could race against it.

The dad died of cancer and the son continued to race against all his dad's saves.

Wehe . . . right click the pic Moffie put up (the 21:01 pic that actually displays, not the 21:50 pic that the doddering old fossil tried to put up but doesn't display) and you'll see it's a car that's being advertised for sale on a California supercar blog.

LMAO!

Not for the first time, the pompous but phenomenally stupid old drunkard has scoured the web for a pic of the car he wishes he owns and claimed it as his own.

It's actually hard to imagine a bigger loser than Moffie. This is getting downright embarrassing!
