Chris De Burgh is a second cousin of mine...we are related to his mothers side...I met him once when he played at West Ridge Stadium in Durban, my late aunt Molly had all the details. He is a small man with a gifted voice, also apparently related to Kate, Prince Williams wife. My aunt died some years ago with our family connections and history. My late uncle Brian inherited the family book.

No, it's nothing to boast about but nevertheless interesting...I'm presently trying to trace my family ancestory and have got a reply...it is indeed verified.

Haha Seb

Lady In Red is among my repertoire but my lady hates the song.

I learnt that the hard way.

Her and i do a good rendition of Wicked Game though. She sings and i play. Problem is, after a few drinks the playing is harder and the singing is easier so I'm generally the one messing up.

"I'm presently trying to trace my family ancestory and have got a reply . . ."
Tit, you haven't got a family tree, you've got a family cactus . . . because it's full of pricks.
Seriously though, go to a website call geni.com and plug in as much info as you can. I used to be able to trace my mother's family back to the 1820 Settlers but after I added all my info to geni.com and they made positive matches I can now trace that branch of my family back to 1520.

Let's assume 30 years per generation...

2 parents 30 years

4 grandparents 60 years

8 gr grandparents 90 years

16 gr gr grandparents 120 years

32 ggg grandparents 150 years

64 gggg grandparents 180 years

128 ggggg grandparents 210 years

256 gggggg grandparents 240 years

512 // 270 years

1024 // 300 years

2048 // 330 years

4096 // 360 years

8192 // 390 years

16384 // 420 years

32768 // 450 years

65536 // 480 years

Cool. At 480 years ago, this(65536) is how many very great grandparents you had. 16 Generous generations.

When you take it back another 16 generations IE to 960 years ago...wait for it...

4 294 967 296 people that you are directly descendant from in a straight line from parent to child.

Good luck Seb.

Considering the relatively small size of cities in the middle ages, and that whites come from Europe, it's quite likely you're related to more people on this board than you'll find on the website.

Basically pick a person from 1000AD, anyone you like, you're probably related to them. Fancy that, I didn't even need website.

Oh, and h ello...cousin.

Plum what a dismal thought. Ou rooitwit is the closest thing to the missing link Darwin could have found! The chances of my being related to rooitwit are negligible as my grandparent immigrated to SA. Thoughts like this disturb one sense of well being!

But nevertheless all the best to rooitwit in 2020. May he continue to entertain us so ably in this new year.

Haha Beeno

It's always hilarious when people talk about their ancestors from 200 years ago.

Oh my gr8 gr8 gr8 gr8 gr8 grandad was so and so...

Ok...what about the other 127 grandparents in his generation?

Lol I wonder which of us the most closely related to Rooi.

Probably Cloudy

So 29 generations ago you had approximately a billion ancestors. That's about 1000 years based on the consensus 30 years to a generation. But there were only 300 million people in existence at that point.  So you used each ancestor 3 times on average.

But shave off 2 generations and you have 250 million.....right around the estimate for global population in 1066, the Battle of Hastings.

So that was the last point in time when all your ancestors could have been truly unique. But of course with the immobility at the time.....you guys are all the product of serious in breeding.

So let's see.....how bad was the Industrial Revolution for mankind.

Population by Year.

1000.......345.

1200.......360

1400.......350

1600......545

1800......813

2000......6082

Without the Industrial Revolution and the gift to humanity of fossil fuels, the trends suggest we would have had, at maximum prior growth rates, only about 1400 million vs 6082 million people on earth.

Isn't oil awful?

And now the solution....it's so obvious. We can go on using oil, the data doesn't suggest anything dramatic will happen. But oil is unbelievably valuable in other applications and in specific applications like air travel. We should look for alternatives  in simple energy applications like road transport.

And the answer is obvious.....nuclear. Even if the rest of the planet was able to grow its use of renewables at the German (world's fastest) rate......renewables by 2050 cover only 20% of the gap if carbon is to be reduced at the concensus rate.

We have only nuclear to bridge the gap. But what of the waste? All the nuclear waste generated thus far by the US can be encapsulated in a swimming pool the the size of a rugby field and 20 feet deep. All the waste you will generate in your life if all your energy was nuclear, would fit in a soda can.

Nuclear power, with modern safeguards is the answer.

I'm all for nuclear, Moz.

Just let it be known that if Eskom run a nuclear power plant, you will die if you live anywhere near it.

We understand so little about the subatomic world, one wonders about a potential butterfly effect involving quantum entanglement or something similar, in the case of nuclear power.

Probably not realistic but the universe is so strange that it would not surprise me if each atom we destroy results in the collapse of another universe out there somewhere.

Nuclear, solar and battery charging looks like the future. And air/ground source heat pumps.

Still would like to know what nuclear waste into a volcano would do. We're probably better off never finding out. I suppose shooting into space is an option considering how little is created. Malema is my nominee for nuclear waste spaceship pilot.
