This thread (posted in the wrong section by the board buffoon) somehow turned into a discussion about art.

I'm no expert when it comes to art but I do know what I like and I do appreciate great art, so I think it deserves a thread of it's own.

My house is full of MC Escher prints. I love his paradoxes and mathematical flaws.

I'm also a huge fan of Claude Monet. One of the calmest and most introspective afternoons of my life was sitting in the beautiful L'Orangerie museum in Paris just staring at Monet's water lilies mural.

One of my daughters is an artist with a Fine Arts degree and she has always talked about Jackson Pollock as one of her favourite artists. I never really appreciated him until I saw one of his originals in the National Gallery in London. I don't know what came over me but looking at that painting (sorry, I can't remember the exact work) just made me feel so emotional and I just wanted to weep.

Another artist I really like is the rather obscure Frank Frazetta (Google is your friend) but I'll concede he's more of a pop-art/cartoon artist.

Talking of cartoons and art, Bill Watterson (the creator of the cartoon strip Calvin and Hobbes for the lost souls who don't know) is an underrated artist in his own right.

But for me it's Vincent Van Gogh. His love for his subject/s just shines through in everything he ever painted. The word "genius" somehow falls short.

So we know ButtPlug likes Rembrandt and I like Van Gogh . . . anyone else want to share their favourite artists and/or works of art?

Edit: Topic title changed from "Art" to "Man-made Art" on 3 Jan 2024.

I have some originals by Tomas Harker, Sam Cannon and Doug Hyde on my walls.

I always loved Klimt and Munch, amongst many others.

My absolute favourite artist is Caravaggio. I just think he’s a genius.

I like Munch….the Brücke school, even though they were probably pervs… .Kiefer….the color field artists….Frankenthaler, Francis….abstracts like Twombly. But I still enjoy seeing Turner, the impressionists although I don’t much care for Cezanne. Caravaggio and El Greco from the classical periods.

I don't only like old timer, Art. Always liked the very likeable Francoise Nielly. I share a birthday with Dali, so have to have him on my list. His Crucifixion is pure genius. Anh Do is another easy to like artist that I enjoy.

Can I say none, never held any interest to me, don't get me wrong I can appreciate the skill some artists display and it takes a special talent but not something I will go out of my way to see. If I want to see a thing of beauty I will head to the high country lakes fishing. Now that is worth seeing. Better than any painting.

I do wonder if fans of modernist and impressionist painting would show the same affection if these were not the products of famous artists.

Realist painting is good, but the camera has to some extent killed that- although some photos look really good

No it's someone posting their opinion on a subject.

Can you not accept someone finds little interest in art but appreciates the natural world as something no artist can surpass.

Still wondering how you read I don't know into my comments, maybe your brain works in a different way to the rest of us.

Do you find it that hard to accept someone finds the arts as something irrelevant and not worth wasting their time with?

Stinks of a small petty mind that thinks only people that agree with them hold any relevance and should be criticized for thinking otherwise.

Some idiot, that's not art, my 2 year old granddaughter can do better than that.

Let me see, go look at some chicken scratches or the natural world, no fucking contest that.

That shit is the epitome of stupidity.

How much good could someone do in this world with that kind of money, instead they waste that kind of money on shit. Sheer fuckin madness and totally out of touch with reality.

Plumster got very upset when I 3educated him about Kolbe being better than Arendse. He was most put out. Hahahhahaha

I have to agree with MOC nature far far surpasses anything an artist can capture and like him I would much rather be out in the beauty of nature than viewing some painting.

That painting worth all that money is a fraud. Its pure rubbish. Talk about an emperor without cloths situation. Mozzie being the pretentious art snob he is pretends there is something to it making it worth all that money.

Unfortunately the art world is full of hoaxers and pretentious snobs who try to make out only they are intelligent enough to see how great a piece of trash like this painting is.

Then a certain type of art lover loves to drop names about his favourite artists or art style, the more obscure the artist the  better as that show he knows his stuff and is a man of discernment, culture, intellect, sensibilities far above his fellow man who call out the bollocks he sees. If a name artist paints anything, no matter how terrible it is, they will extoll it to the heavens and excoriate anyone who points out the obvious.

Some even get very emotional about a painting, weeping copiously as the stuff their mouths full of cookies etc. But mention hundreds of millions of children being murdered and they are not really interested.

Nope the soundest post on this thread surprisingly goes to MOC.

Traveled the world  and yet to see any piece of art that even comes close to the natural world.

If anyone one thinks a mere painting comes close they have never left their mothers basement.

I doubt I will ever see everything this world has to offer but I can guarantee 1 thing I will never waste 1 day in some stuffey art museum over seeing everything this world has to offer.

Anyone gets the chance to visit the Milford sounds I dare you to say some mere painting is superior to that.

My number 1 place to visit, it is just so overwhelming it takes your breath away.

Did you guys see the heading of this thread?

If you have no interest in a subject, why even bother clicking on it? Was the title "Art" not typed big or bold enough for you?

If you have no interest in a topic then just stay off it. You don't have to click on a thread just to tell everyone how much you dislike the topic. Exercise your right to ignore it rather than making dicks of yourselves telling everyone how much you hate the topic they're discussing.

Do you seriously need to be told this?

Serious question CFan, why don't you start a thread of your own asking people this question?
Once again, did you see the title of this thread? Are you so disrespectful that you have to try and change a thread to what you want to discuss . . . when it's not exactly difficult or time-consuming to simply start your owm thread about the topic you'd rather discuss?
Hmmm?

Is the natural world not considered art anymore?

Since when did this forum bring in rules that we canno offert different  views from the original post?

Fuck off with your biased views on what art is.

There is so many beautiful spots in nature that it will take your breath away…Bonus about nature, is that the picture you get, even of the same place, can change every time you go….the one day you go you might see a beautiful Eagle and the next time something different….being outside and walking around, is also very good for your health….that being said, a good artist that can capture something timeless on canvas is also something special….that scribble looks like a repetitive signature of sorts….the Artist can most probably charge what he wants, but if he will get $3.5 Mil is another Question….Art is also a form of investment and can be taken anywhere in the world where you can get hard cash for it…each to there own.

The arrogance of someone that thinks art is better than what the natural world has to offer.

I fail to understand how you think the natural wonders of this world are inferior to human art.

You are entitled to your opinion but do not understand why you would attack me for thinking the natural beauty of this world surpasses any thing some artist has to offer.

"I fail to understand how you don't think the natural wonders of this world are inferior to human art."
Can you point out exactly where I wrote anything to that effect or even implied it?
Listen chump, natural beauty and art are two different subjects. Natural beauty is created by nature and art is created by people. If you saw the title of this thread and decided this is where you'd like to slag off art and discuss natural beauty then you're stupid. Plain and simple. Now go start your own thread about what you'd like to talk about . . . or if it's too difficult for you then ask me and I'll do it for you.
Fair enough?
