So Putin says he is running for election again in 2024, He has been in power longer than anyone except Stalin.
We can assume he will cheat if need be.

They say there are no alternatives.  Perhaps because they are in jail, or would be put in jail.
Anyone who would oppose Putin on his own team would not be safe either.

If he does have an approval rating of 80%, it beggars believe what makes up Russia.

This is something I do not li.ke.   Putin became a wto term President in accordance with the Constitution in 2000 - ie his term was limited to 2008.   He relighuished the Presidency that year and serve as Prime Mi.nister of Russia until 2012 - when he legally could file for re-election for another two terms.lasting from 2012 to 2024    Mevedev was Pesidn rom 2008 to 2012.   He appointed Putin as Prime Minister and also proposed that the Presidential term should be 4 years - but rather 6 years.

Medvedev served as President from 2008 to 2012 and that means that he could himself decide to serve for 2 6-year terms.   However, he did not serve after Putin was re=elected as President in 2012.    The fact s that Putin was in fact re-elcted as President until 2024.

What I do not like is that the Russian Parliament passed a motion that effectively could result in Putin serving a third consequent term of office as a special case up to 2030.   That motion was Unconstitutional and that is why I have reservations about a third term lasting from 2024 to 2030.   I think that the Russian Parliament (Duma) should not and cannot legally pass an Unconstitutional motion and I believe that his Presidency should not be allowed beyond 2024.

It is the same with Xi Jinping, a special exception was made for an extra term- and then suddenly that becomes life.

"Everyone" agreed that in this instance a special exception should be made to avoid following the constitution.

The Constitution of Russia remains in place and was not changed at all.   If they want a constitutional change it would have to be approved in a referendum.    That type of thing does not apply to President Xi and your answer is BS.     The Russian Court has gone against the State in the case of Constitutional issues.

The act of Parliament specifically excluded any extension and the Court ruling was that they would allow a third term - but any further extension after the special third tem would have to be done through a Change to the Constitution which would have to be approved by a referendum.   Weirdly enough the Russian High Court  based  their  decision on the threat of . War stemming from the situation in 1940 when Roosevelt was allowed a third term as a President based on the War in Europe - when Roosevelt was in fact elected when the USA was NOT involved in WW2.    The threat of war involving Russia in  in Ukraine played a role in the Court decision.   By 2020 Russia was desperate to avoid a war through negotiations - but the USA was not interested in any negotiations.

When Biden and Putin met in in Geneva in 2021 Russia raised the Ukraine issue in their only meeting in Vienna.    Biden promised to refer the matter on negotiation on the Issue to the State Department and further negotiations should be initiated - but no such subsequent negotiations between the USA and Russia took place.   Biden in fact was only interested in discussions of alleged cyber attacks by Russia on USA infrastructure and Putin's response was that Russia should be provided with proof that the cyber-attacks came from Russia. and full details of the attack.   Biden failed to provide the proof and after that meeting and no  further negotiations on any issue took place betweeen Biden and Putin on any level whatsoever.     The USA was provided billions in arms provision and Government aid to Ukraine while a civil was was taking place in Eastern Ukraine and a danger that a  war could break out was evident by the end of 2021 at least.

In any event there s no chance that in 2030 any extension or further term for Putin would be  allowed without a Change to the Russian Constitution and a referendum be held on that basis.    In the last Parliamentary election Putin's Party.got only 48% of the votes - but remained in power due to the fact that Regional results were split between Putin's Party and up to 11 opposition parties splitting  the votes and it is consequently unclear whether the Russian voters will in fact approve such a change.

DumbMike, enough drivel.
This is what Chat GPT had to say:
As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the President of Russia was limited to serving two consecutive terms in office. However, in March 2020, the Russian constitution was amended, allowing President Vladimir Putin to potentially run for two more terms. This change reset his term limits, effectively allowing him to run for re-election in 2024 and potentially stay in office until 2036.

It is simple. A country has a term limit that anyone is legally allowed to do. For example, 12 years.

If exceptions are made, it is because the leader has removed any Democratic functioning. of the government, and replaced with yes men.
