The host nation got knocked out thanks to William Webb.3 of the top 7 ranked teams over the last 4 years ended up in one group. The other groups were for the most part one traditional power with the minnows. (outside top 7)
The competition is surely flawed.

I read the Welsh coach talk about that, saying it was a stupid idea to draw teams four years ago and that they should adopt the soccer model. He lamented it was a groups from hell rather than group of death.

Simple solution....the top 8 ranked sides need to be paired in the 4 groups.....with the top 4 sides being placed in each group and the next 4 being drawn from a hat.
Cant go wrong
However, there are presently 9 top tier sides, so one group is always going to be top heavy
NZ, Oz, SA, Argies, France, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England
Italy will argue they belong in th ere as well.
