Is it because Meyer has absolute faith in his bench or is it an act of madness?..... or is it an act of stupidity?
I just don't get it.
I think it's fair to say that to make a change at a critical part of the game puts a lot of pressure on the bench player.
Isn't it wise to wait until the pressure is relaxed before making a change? And even if Meyer has absolute faith in his bench there is still the human element of making a mistake which cannot be ignored.
The practice of substitution has a lot to do with timing.
Anyone remember that chip and charge individual brilliance by Ricky Januarie in the Dunedin Test? Nothing illustrates the importance of timing better listening to Jake White saying he was just about to replace Ricky when that bit of unbelievable magic won us the test.
Meyer's timing is tragic.
