Jannie du Plessis is the most important player in Bok rugby...the only proven international tighthead. When the Koch hype was in full swing I sounded a note of caution...his struggles against a few of the stronger S15 packs were worrying. It's not the extent of dominance against weak packs that count, it's functioning when the pressure is on.
I already see, as was the case with Malherbe last year that there are claims our scrumming improved when Marcel came on. It didn't. He leaked penalties and mostly scrummed against the much weaker Bargie sub.

If Marcel started he would have been dominated....if Malherbe started he would have been belly flopping.
All those dumping on Jannie should enjoy your egg.

Delusional as usual ...

Jannie is useless ... always has been.

He's been bested by every loosehead in the country.

Try to catch a wake up will ja?

Jannie last year was as bad - if not worse - than Koch was today.   He was nothing but firm in the Aussie and All Black games - so suddenly he is hyped up again after a year of nondescript performances.
That is what I would call sheer stupidity to claim that he would have done better today if his record against Argentina last year is borne in mind.

Our scrum was dominant against Oz and against NZ, until Jannie went off in both games. Today when he wasn't there at all our scrum was embarrassing. Jannie is our best scrummager at tighthead by a mile. There will be off days.....but there is no other choice for a crucial scrum in a WC knock out game.

Moz pleSe! Last yeat Beast and Jannir were doing well against all comers including the Argies in Sa. However Beast and Jannie got taken to the cleaners in Argentina via illegal scrumming. Are you sure that didnt happen again today? In addition the weaker Iz and nz scum did okay against the Argies. I smell a BIG RAT!

HasBeen I don't think so. If you look at the first scrum where Ayerza got penalized, he seemed very hesitant to follow the wheel. What happened for the rest looked fine to me.

All those Bargie scrums last year are posted on the Board for viewing. My take was our front row last year took the initial hit.....but then the  whole scrum was shunted back by a huge Bargie power pulse. I never saw that today. I saw Koch unbalanced at the hit and folded shortly afterwards.

It is unbelievable that we only have one tighthead prop that is able to scrum at international level. The Argentinians just seemed like they are better scrummagers- and physically stronger props.
Koch may never recover from that embarrassing display, and Marcel was only slightly better.
Maybe we need to try another loosehead to combine with Koch. Beast is a nothing player these days- his work rate is non-existent.

Agreed Moz, we need Jannie back. What Jannie and Beast provide are a solid platform at scrum-time, they don't tend to destroy their opposite but they provide good ball for the scrum half and they hardly get pushed back.

Who for the bench though? Malherbe?

That looked like a clear Malherbe call before the Aussies took him apart. Now it's totally unclear...not Koch. Malherbe seems better when the power is channeled low, and Marcel scrums up, often illegally. So I guess you could sort of tailor your choice to the opposition scrum, but all things being equal it would be Jannie subbed by Malherbe sadly.

Fair point, it's a shame really. There's not really been any continuity in finding Jannie's back up and eventual successor and it's left us in the situation we're in now.
On the positive side though, both Nyakane and Kitshoff are solid back ups for beast, and in the case of Kitshoff he could overtake Beast. On that thought, how's Nyakane scrum at tighthead?

Although Jannie got buckled last year against the Argentinian scrum as well.
Jannie may be ready for next week- but it might be more damage control if Jannie plays.

Because the Argentinian scrum last year had any bearing on the Argentinian scrum yesterday.
Hint: I may or may not have been sarcastic there

The fact that is ignored is that Jannie was disastrously poor against the Argentinians last year and the myth about him being dominant in the scrums against the AB's and the Aussies this year is nothing but hype.   He was stable - not dominant in the tests mentioned.

Ag pleeze ... So Beast and Jannie provide us with a solid platform, huh?

I think it may be time for you to have your prescription checked.

You've either had too much to drink or your eyes need to be looked at.

Malherbe is injury prone. One match on ... three matches off injured.

He's not an option at all.

Jannie has been cleaned up so many times it's just not funny. Locally and internationally.

Apart from being a very weak scrummager, a penalty machine, hopeless defender and generally absent most of the match you guys still rate him as our best??

Have you lost you minds?

If that be the case then we're in a lot more trouble than first thought.

Beast is almost as useless as Jannie.

We currently have the weakest tighthead in the country wearing the Protea 3 jersey ... and to add to that we now have the 5 or sixth weakest loosehead in the country doing duty in the Protea 1 jersey.

Is it any wonder we're getting hammered by the likes of Scotland and Argentina?

Unbelievable!!!

Yes we are in more trouble than first thought. We do not produce good props . It's been a longstanding problem.

What a load of crap, what Marcel did when he came on was prove just how ignorant you are when it comes to props and in particular Marcel who made your name mud in that test.

The last time Jannie played against the Argies he got his arse kicked like no tomorrow.

What Marcel did was prove that he and Malherbe are by far our best tightheads.

How ignorant I am about props? Oh sure...when you were still pushing Coenie, I told you he would never survive test rugby with that neck. When everybody was picking Koch to replace Jannie I warned that his S15 form against stronger teams was worrying.
And I suggested Malherbe was fine in a dominant scrum, but not a good defensive scrummager as we saw against Oz. He goes down, losing his bind under pressure.
As for your laughable claims that Marcel was good on Saturday...he was penalized and always under the cosh. He comes up far too much, almost in every scrum. Its a belly dance. Start him against Ayerza and there will be another debacle.
Right now Jannie is our only tighthead who is functional in a retreating scrum. Now you are schooled, try to be more observant

After some splendid weeks Koch leaked penalties today against Ben Robinson. What happened is hard to say. Malherbe seemed in control against the Aussie, even though he was on his knees a few times. But that changed when Koch subbed on. To me it seemed that Robinson was hinging against Koch...but clearly it didn't work against Malherbe.

Struggling against Robinson is not unusual for Bok tightheads, Janiie for example has had some torrid games against the rotund Oz. Still this raises some question marks about Koch's prospects.

Well Moz yes you are completely ignorant when it comes to props and scrums.....for a start the issue against Oz was not Malherbe but Heinke who......I struggle to see how this very fact escapes you.

No he does not go down under pressure, the player that was under pressure was Heinke, the same player the ref kept talking to.......but you are blind to this fact because in your eyes the issue is with Malherbe, the same guy who keeps proving you wrong.

Coenie is on the mend, his career is anything but over so I am not sure what you are on about. Before his injury he was in the form of his life.

You are a fucking joke if you expect me to believe that Marcel was anything but good on Saturday, you are clearly smarting at your ignorant calls. He dominated Ayerza in that only scrum between them....bloody listen to what the commentators said.

The penalty against him was a joke and he never scrummed up, all he did do was scrum the crap out of the Argie replacement loosehead making your name mud in the process.

This is the second time Marcel has made you look stupid, I'm not going to even entertain a response the next time you choose to impart your wisdom on Marcel and Malherbe.....its laughable.

Jannie has been at best solid after a pathetic S15.......Malherbe was better than Jannie when he replaced him against Oz.

Jannie got drilled the last time he played against the Argies......Marcel on the otherhand restored the order.

Functional in a retreating scrum - that must be a joke on your part.  Why the retreat if he was any good in scrums?  LMAO

Actually Draad I thought Koch got a raw deal from the ref, many of his calls were poor......in particular the one where he told Koch he had lost his bind when in fact the replay showed he had not.

There was only one scrum that I recall where Koch got lifted - apart from that, he seemed to be targeted by the ref.

Koch has been good all S15 and remains a great prospect. No doubt useless Meyer will now discard him given his player management record.

No they are all great prospect for sure....Koch dominated Ayerza, Marcel belly danced the Bargie sub into oblivion, Malherbe didn't belly flop against Oz. and the moon is made of green cheese.

Come now you have to give credit to what Mozart is saying here.  Jannie is solid in retreating scrums - he did that excellently in 8 of the 11 matches he played in over the past year.   His reverse gear in those 8 matches was in full swing - so he was solid in that gear.  In three of the tests he was solid so his reverse gear malfunctioned.
He is the national treasure because in reverse gear he looks solid .

I have little issue with Jannie, he is solid enough......just past it now.

The issue I have is Moz telling us our props are failing when they are doing the opposite.

Look no further than Malherbe improving the scrum when he replaced Jannie against Oz. Moz keeps banging on about the time Heinke was on the field and somehow drew the conclusion that Malherbe was the one struggling......if that was the case then why did the Bok scrum march the Aussies back the minute Malherbe replaced Jannie, while Beast and Bismark were on board.

But best of all is Marcel steading the Bok scrum against the Argies and we have Moz telling us he was struggling.......its a load of crap based primarily on who the player is.
