Wellington - All Blacks lock Patrick Tuipulotu has been suspended following a positive drugs test, New Zealand Rugby has revealed.
Tuipulotu returned to New Zealand before the All Blacks Test against France on their northern hemisphere tour last November for what was described then as "personal reasons."
New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and the New Zealand Rugby Players Association (NZRPA) have now confirmed they were notified of a positive test in November and the 24-year-old Tuipulotu was "shocked" by the result.
"A doping control sample provided by Patrick Tuipulotu had, reportedly, revealed the presence of a specified substance listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency's 2016 prohibited list," the joint statement read.
"NZR and NZRPA can confirm that Patrick was shocked by the test result and is working hard to identify the source of the specified substance.
"In accordance with World Rugby Anti-Doping regulations, Patrick remains provisionally suspended pending resolution of this matter."
Fairfax Media reported on Monday that it understood the result of a B-sample test was not yet known "and much will hinge on that".
Tuipulotu played against Ireland in Chicago and against Italy in Rome on the end of season tour before returning home for what coach Steve Hansen said was "personal reasons".
The second-row forward has played 12 Tests and is signed with NZR until the end of the 2019 season.

SharkBok, he is "provisionally suspended pending the resolution of the matter". So it is not as bad as it could be. If he can't provide a satisfactory explanation he could be out of rugby for a year or more but so far that is not the case.
I know an intelligent bloke like you sees these things with clarity but we have blokes like wee Beeno who need a good deal of guidance to make sure they don't become completely unhinged. One can only pray it isn't  too late... well it is too late but one must remain optimistic

I bet he is trying to identify the source......funny how any Saffa who is suspended for drugs is a 'dirty Japie", whereas this cheater who has been looking for the source since October, is 'provisionally' suspended.

He was unfortunate - he was tested in Europe - would he have had the same treatment if he was tested in NZ?   Probably not.

Look, I know there are real cheaters, but the anti doping laws are so extensive and tight, you might get fingered for using the wrong brand of ketchup these days. These guys get tested often and I'm sure most of them getting caught took the stuff by accident.

As predicted Beeno cannot resist an insane rant.
Beeno's true self revealed when they "drained the swamp".

The PC version is "mentally creative" but the days of PC are long gone
Incidentally the regulations for anti-doping were updated in early January of this year so we may see more cases in the press. Link to updated regs

Mark Reason: Confidentiality on Patrick Tuipulotu's positive test damages New Zealand rugby
Patrick Tuipulotu may have a reasonable explanation for his positive test but the damage to NZ rugby's image has been done.
OPINION: Try telling the world that Patrick Tuipulotu is innocent of taking drugs. Try telling the world that the 24-year-old All Black was shocked to have returned a positive test for a banned substance. Yeah right, they will say, just like the Belarusian shot putter Nadzeya Ostapchuk, was shocked to be convicted of a doping offence.
Yep, that was the very word she used. Ostapchuk said, "It's a complete shock to me." And not one of us believed a word she said. She was a cheater and a fraud. So why should we be surprised if the same world now thinks that the All Blacks are a bunch of rugby junkies. One comment on the l'Equipe website said of Tuipulotu, "The only one? Don't make me die from laughing."
And there was much more in the same vein, if you will pardon the expression: "Le debut d'une longue liste" – the start of a long list; "Les Blacks c'est les Russes du Rugby" – the Blacks are the Russians of rugby; "C'est pas un mystere que les Neo-Z charges commes les mules" – it is no secret that the New Zealanders are laden like mules.
GETTY IMAGESPatrick Tuipulotu, pictured playing for the Blues, was sent home from the All Blacks' tour to Europe in November.
These are reader or fan comments, but you get the picture. A few commenters suggested that Tuipulotu could always get a job at Racing, the French club of Dan Carter and Joe Rokocoko that shoots its players up with corticosteroids, the same anti-inflammatory drug that keeps recurring in French rugby and other top level sport. Ha, ha.
READ MORE:* NZ Rugby stonewalling by the book* AB's drug test 'shock'* All Black tests positive
And while this story continues to roll around in a void of no comment and confidentiality clauses, the damage to New Zealand rugby will only grow. The world will echo Valerie Adams when she said, "Once a cheater, always a cheater, kick them out and don't let them back in. That's my stand on doping. Zero tolerance."
Of course, we haven't yet even got confirmation of a positive test from Tuipulotu's 'B' sample. And that's another mystery. Given that Tuipulotu was sent home from tour in November, for the ludicrously inappropriately cited 'personal reasons', surely they have tested the 'B' sample by now. They just needed Tuipulotu or a representative of Tuipulotu to attend the 'B' test for it to be carried out.
So has it been done or not done? And if not, why not? It's another void into which people will pour their own speculation. It is another public relations crisis for New Zealand rugby.
And in this particular instance I have a small amount of sympathy for them because they are bound by Wada's confidentiality clause that safeguards an athlete's personal information.
That clause should not apply to professional sports people. We, the stakeholder, have a right to be able to trust in the entertainment that our TV subscriptions and ticket purchases are paying for. So if Wada wants to go down the route of therapeutic use exemption drugs and specified substances, knowing full well that many doctors and athletes will cheat the system, we shouldn't have to rely on Russian hackers to find out the details. In this case, had Stuff not broken the story, we'd all still be none the wiser.
Ad Feedback
Olympic yachtsman Peter Burling said, "I don't have any issues with TUEs and that sort of record being public. It's something that's a sign of the times and hopefully it encourages more people to be cleaner and take really good care about what they are taking."
Mahe Drysdale said, "My personal opinion is if you're going to use a substance others can't then you should be able to justify it and be happy for it to be out in the public domain. That should actually help the TUE system not get abused."
We do not yet know what Tuipulotu has tested positive for, but there are signs that he may claim that it falls under the Wada classification of a 'specified substance.'
Wada says, "Specified substances are not necessarily less serious agents for the purpose of doping than other prohibited substances, and nor do they relieve athletes of the strict liability rule that makes them responsible for all substances that enter his or her body. However, there is a greater likelihood that these substances could be susceptible to a credible non-doping explanation."
It's the sort of loophole that the whole of New Zealand will cling to and the rest of the world will scoff at. They've heard all the excuses.
Well, that's one way of getting on the Supersize Me diet, the other is by taking pills and supplements. David Howman, the New Zealand former head of Wada said that kids taking drugs "scares the hell out of me" and that there was not enough schoolboy testing.
A former international coach told the Mail on Sunday, "You can't become as big as the players are becoming without a serious amount of drug-taking ... It's a problem that has engulfed the sport and I wanted no part of it. Be assured, you don't get a physique like a modern-day rugby player by eating grilled fish and doing press-ups."
That perception is not going to go away. They said Bradley Wiggins, the British winner of the Tour de France, was taking corticosteroids because he "was really struggling with asthma." And the world laughed. Well, maybe Britain didn't.

And nor are we in New Zealand. Most people believe in clean All Blacks. Most people here will believe in Tuipulotu's innocence. B ut the rest of the world will not and that is why all this secrecy and confidentiality is a public relations disaster . Even if Tuipulotu has an entirely innocent explanation and is exonerated, the damage to the All Blacks has already been done.

NZ being sent warnings: play ball with the rest of the team or face painful annoyances.

Going to be a test of character for NZ and their ABs. They have the means to keep dominating the scene,do they have the will?

They were sent an order to take a knee, to drop a few games now and then, especially against the number one loser rugby, England.

Either NZ submit or they do not. If they do not, it will turn into NZ vs the rest of the world.

All Blacks: Negative result vindicates Patrick Tuipulotu - Steve Hansen

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says it's "wonderful news" to hear Patrick Tuipulotu has been cleared of his doping charge.

The lock was today exonerated of any wrongdoing after he tested positive for a banned substance following last year's clash with Ireland in Chicago, with the B-sample he provided proving clean.

And Hansen, speaking before tonight's Halberg Awards where he has been nominated for the coach of the year award, said the outcome would be a relief to Tuipulotu after a tumultuous period.

"In this case you've got an innocent man, and the effect that can have on him, his family and his reputation is massive," Hansen said. "Patrick said he was really shocked about the whole thing right from the beginning, so he's now been vindicated."

Hansen said he was not alone in initially being perplexed about how Tuipulotu came to test positive, with the All Blacks careful to monitor everything that goes in the players' bodies.

"Guys are very aware of what they're taking and they're asking questions of all the staff," Hansen said. "That's why this one was a bit of a mystery to everybody. Patrick was 100 per cent sure he hadn't taken anything wrong, yet we had an A-sample that said he had. Now the B-sample has come back and vindicated what he was saying."

But rather than taking aim at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Salt Lake City where testing took place, Hansen was more upset at "a few people who have had a shot" at the player in the last week.

"It's disappointing that it can happen but...anything when you're involving humans there will be mistakes made," Hansen said. "The thing that disappoints me more is how people are so quick to make judgement that he must be guilty.

"Sometimes people are a bit too quick to judge, and that's why the process is so important."

Nothing of the sort. The analysis protocol demands that several samples are sent to different laboratories to be tested, the athlete is confirmed as doped when tests are returned as positive on different samples.
In this case, the athlete was declared as doped without the completion of the protocol.
Unusual to test one sample, find it compromizing, not use the other samples to confirm the suspicion (as demanded by the protocol), call the player out by leaking the piece of information in the press, going up to asking the player to explain himself, to later disprove the all thing by carrying out the protocal as it should have been in the first place.

I'm glad the guy was cleared of any wrong doing. But at the same time one does have to look at some of the guys playing these days and wonder how on earth they get that big.
Looking at the size of the Du Preez brother for example. Even with roids it's ridiculously difficult to grow like that. I'm not accusing them of anything. I just wonder how many protein shakes and almond butter jars they go through in a day. It wouldn't surprise me if steroid use was much more prevalent than most of us think.
The majority of legal workout supplements that are available today have been around for ten years or more with the main ones like testosterone boosters, creatine, proteins and amino acids having been around for much much longer.
So what has changed?

'Not as big a legal embarrassment as though...... 'Children's Commissioner and former principal youth court judge Andrew Becroft said New Zealand, as a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, should have raised the age at which offenders were treated as adults a long time ago. Apart from a few US states, New Zealand stood alone in not having done so and was an embarrassment, he said. "We are just entirely out of step and we just can't go on simply ignoring it year after year - it's just unacceptable and it represents really an enduring stain on our otherwise good justice record."' Trying kids as adults......pretty old school in the worst way. '

NZ Herald article contained this quote:
"The Salt Lake City-based Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory has promised to investigate the flawed process which resulted in a positive A sample and negative B sample, but Tuipulotu, in facing the media for the first time this morning before joining his teammates on the training pitch, appeared keen to put it all behind him."

So we may not have heard the end of this but I am glad Tuipulotu is back practicing for the Blues, they need him.
