You'll probably pi5s me right outta the sky but aside from the Sharks I think the rest of the SA S15 teams will do better this year. Cheetahs and Bulls both had stagnant coaches who weren't going anywhere. Stormers now have ruby's very own Jesus Christ coaching them and I think the Lions will go from strength to strength. Dunno, maybe the Sharks surprise us too. Haha i looked at Gary Gold's career...and now I'm convinced he's one of those mafia coaches. Never does any good anywhere he goes yet constantly seems to get promoted. Poor Lambie. Probably smuggling Durban Poison in his a5s to France again this year.

If you don't get your hopes up you can never be disappointed. Let's wait and see. Eddie Jones who I have a ton of respect for will be taking the reins of a young inexperienced and an unsettled side......it's a concern.

Well you can guarantee at least 1 saffa team in a final thanks to the new rorted conference nonsense .Still means SA rugby wont be getting any stronger though ,to be the best you need to play the best as often as possible.

Plum - it will definitely be better now that Coetzee, Drotske and Ludeke are history.

Jones will be good or the Stormers, who were sold own the river by useless Coetzee.

Meyer clone in Ludeke is history thank goodness......the Bulls under Marais were a different side this CC. Played the complete game......we saw Hougaard back to his best at 9 and the investment in Dries Swanepoel at 13, Gellant at 15 and the very impressive Ulengo on the wing.......something we never saw under useless Ludeke. It was also great to see faith shown in impressive Baby Boks.....Schoeman at prop and locks RG Snyman and Jason Jenkins

The Cheetahs will suffer with a lack of player depth - they have lost two stars in Willie and Coenie

Sadly useless Gold is retained at the Sharks, why they ever thought he was the answer is beyond me.......but they have a good squad and maybe the introduction of Robert du Preez to the coaching staff might help. I hear he is held in high regard as a coach.

The Lions will be very good under Ackers and Swys de Bruin.......they will now believe they belong at this level and have all positions covered with the find of Lorens Erasmus to partner Mostert at lock and the coming of age of Mnisi at 12.

I think that the two sides that will produce very little in Super 15 this year are the Sharks and Kings,   The Kings are totally bankrupt and cannot afford to participate in the competition.   A recent report on the issue contain the following:-
"These issues come in the wake of reports that Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal has expressed an interest to ‘buy’ the Kings franchise and bail them out of their financial woes. However, a list of unfeasible demands are believed to be attached to the offer."
The unfeasible demands will no doubt include that the Kings get rid of the Watsons the owner will appoint their own coaching personnel.   Selection will purely be on merit and some players from Toulon will be assigned to the Kings.   This would indeed be th way out for the Kings - but Watson and his ANC cronies will shout murder - since it will not allow for any further looting at the Kings,
The Sharks are going nuts with Smith really going bananas - contracting has-beens and never-has-beens left right and center.  Gold is BS as a coach - but Robert du Preez as backline coach could help massively.
The Cheetahs are in a team building stage again - but they are beginning to look better already than they did last year.
Getting rid of Coetzee, Ludeke and Drotske will help the three fra nchises concerned.

Mickey, We've been led into the bushes for too long by a bunch of pretenders, every year we as fans would get our hopes up only to be left crying in our beers.
We need coaches who can teach our players skills, we need coaches who have flexibility of gameplan but above all we need coaches who can teach our backline how to make better use of the ball so as to score tries.

So you reckon we have those coaches?
If we do, no problem. I see one in Eddie Jones and another in Ackers, time will tell how the rest stacks up but for now I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm not expecting an easy start for Jones, it will be a miracle if under him the Stormers hit the deck running but I expect they will the longer he stays.

@Wardad. "Well you can guarantee at least 1 saffa team in a final thanks to the new rorted conference nonsense .Still means SA rugby wont be getting any stronger though ,to be the best you need to play the best as often as possible."

Exactly. SA rugby is in a downward spiral second to none. Have been since the end of the S14 era. Nothing is going to change any time soon. We can have the best national coach the world has to offer, it won't help us bugger all. I said, before the RWC that we cannot win it, given how crap we have been in Super Rugby in recent years. The S14 was great and everybody got to play everybody and the strongets teams ended up at the top and in the final. The S15 conference BS was a balls-up and saw sides featuring in the play-offs, that did not deserve to be in the play-offs at all. In the earlier seasons we had Aus sides who got there without deserving it and in the last two seasons we had SA sides who should not have been there. That gave SA sides, and supporters, a false sense of achievement.
And it is going to be worse under the new system. FFS, Japan do not even have a team yet and they are not even going to be based in Japan. They won't even be playing all their home games in Japan. We don't know a lot about Argentina yet. In addition, the useless bunch who played a big part in this comedy of errors, the Kings, haven't paid their players for three months and are pinning their hopes on some mysterious sponsor who is yet to be named. Two of our other sides have been bottom dwellers for ages with each of them having one season of reasonable success.
And we lost out on the RWC because of the coach and his selections alone? Give me a break. Yes, we did come close to beating the ABs but they did just enough to win the game. There was no way that they were going to throw everything into the semi-finals. We would have lost that game even had it not been for "the infamous VM incident", or Lood's miss on Kano. The ABs would just have stepped it up a gear and take the game in the end.
It's a balls up.

We need coaches at school level who can teach that at school level and then we have to be patient for 10 to fifteen years to reap the benefits. It took decades for our rugby to go down the tubes. You are not going to fix it in four years.

Vlag you are speaking a load of horse shit......we have more talent than ever......but nothing was ever going to come of that with the likes of Meyer, Ludeke, Coetzee, Drotske and Gold pulling the strings.

We have one worthy coach in Ackers, who has potentially the least resources to work with......he has taken the Lions from nobodies to mid table in the s15 and unbeaten in the CC......my guess is that the Lions will up their standing next Super season......no they will never challenge for a top spot as they don't have the depth.......but what it demonstrates is what can be done with the talent we have......Ackers encourages the Lions to attack space........Ludeke, Meyer, Coetzee and Gold prefer the direct route......hence the results.

Just look at how the Bulls have been transformed this CC, with a coach that shows faith in players that should have been selected a season or two ago and a game that mirrors the Lions......we are already seeing the benefits of change in the coaching staff.

Eddie Jones at the Stormers, will prove exactly what we have been missing in SA when it comes to coaches.

The main problem with the SA franchises has been the fact that they were in the main coached by people stuck in the past and addicted to stampkar rugby.  The backlines were only there to defend.  The real effort was directed at kicking the ball away - thus handing over possession.
The fact that the three most useless coaches are gone will be a good thing - but in the case of the Cheetahs there is a major team building exercise under way and positive effects may just be more noticeable in 2017.  The same with the Bulls where the duds of the past is being slowly eliminated.
Insofar as the Stormers is concerned I think that Jones will have a major job insofar as the backline players are concerned.  He has a major problem in the player identification outside of 12.  He will struggle without De Allende around whom he earlier indicated he was going to build his Stormers backline.  The center situation without him and the wings and full vack will have to come from elsewhere.  The mircolights - the curse of the Stormers backline over the last 3 years - will have to be replaced. A real challenge for Eddie.   However, I do not foresee too many problems insofar as their forwards are concerned.

@Dave. I have never said that we do not have talent. Never. We do not have coaches. Not at schools level, not at under age level. Not at provincial level and certainly not at Super Rugby level. Ackerman has proven zip. In 2013 it was al song and dance when Naka Drotske, of all people, got the Cheetahs in the play-offs. Drotske got the Cheetahs into the no 6 spot in 2013. Ackerman did not even get to the play-offs. He only won 56% of his games and you p!ss about HM's 60 something % win!!

Last year I saw Grey PE, ranked 10 in SA at the time, beat Millfield, one of the top rugby schools sides in the UK.....not bad considering they were playing in NH conditions.

I also saw Dr EG Jansen beat a damn good club sides Colts side last year.......there was skill to burn from that side.

Go watch the WP display in the Craven Week final and come tell me SA schools rugby lack skill

If our schools rugby is so great, then why are we lacking in basic skills? Our centres, for one, do not have the skills to scan the field and get their defensive lines correct. You can develop defensive structures as much as you like but if they do not have those skills developed at an early age, they are not going to have the ability to use it.
The school boys are doing OK when they tackle others with similar experience and physique. It is when they have to tackle the blue beards at senior level that the cracks start to show.
Everybody is falling down at Handre Pollard's feet. His decision making is crap. His kicking out of hand is crap. His distribution is average. This RWC was one too soon for him. Too soon as the prime flyhalf in any case. He will never be a Dan Carter. Not if our rugby stays in the state that it is at present, and by that I do not mean the current coach. I mean the current general situation that SA rugby in general finds itself in.

 Exactly my thoughts, Mickey.

Vlag you have a pretty good insight into the state of our rugby, I wholeheartedly agree with you. My thoughts exactly. Pollard has a long way to go, it's a damn shame because he is talented. If he had learnt his rugby in Oz then in my not so humble opinion he could have been an alltime great. Meyer like you say rushed him through, he should have been allowed to mature at his own pace.

You always have the wrong end of the stick.  Our problem has never been with the schools rugby - there is talent in abundance on that level.  However, the moment the main unions got hold of those youngsters in their academies  - the whole system goes haywire.  The skills the kids have suffered because they were expected to play a completely different and unnatural brand of rugby - effectively their existing  skills are coached out of them by dunces.
If they refuse to tie up - they do not get selected in teams and their careers are cut short.   The tragedy is that the most skilful youngsters suffer the most.  Take for instance Pollard - he was a completely different player immediately after he left school and afterwards Ludeke and Meyer got at him and he is rarely if ever showing the skills he used to have.
The main problem we have had for years now is the franchise coaches and their dedication to dud  players and to a dud game plan - the key element to it was the so-called kicking game and handing over of possession to the opponents.  There was a dedication to backline players where size and defense was the only norm and depending on no ball skills.   The Stormers went the opposite way - they selected skill-deficient small players who are worthless in defense.
The main problem is not at school level - it is directly linked to the BS preached and practiced at the rugby academies of the major unions and the Franchise coaches.  I always said that the dolts coached the skills out of the players and if they refuse to conform they are cast out by the dunces.

"If our schools rugby is so great, then why are we lacking in basic skills?"
You missed the point completely as per normal - I wrote about what happened to the kids coming out of schools when they get into the provincial academies.  That is where the cancer start growing because of the impact of dud coaching.   Can you understand plain English - even your own scribbling?
Look get your facts straight and then quot something you said - contradicting directing the above sentence as  quoted.

Hard to get excited about this year's S15 after they've messed up the format so badly.

I suspect SANZAR are in for a rude awakening when they see how many viewers they'll lose with this shambles of a tournament that used to be so attractive back when there were 12 teams and less.

Oh what utter crap - kindly point out an instance which evidences this load of hogwash about our players lacking basic skill - centres do not have the skills to scan the field - based on what exactly......stop making it up.

Wow so in Pollard, clearly one of the best 10's at the WC, you have an issue with him do you? You are fucking clueless......apart from a few uncharacteristic poor kicks out of hand in one game, he was pretty damn good throughout, in particular attacking the gain line.

You are speaking utter shit and dumb Denise who knows fuck all about rugby is agreeing with you

Our centres, and most of our bacline  players, TBH, always seem to stuff up the defensive lines. Teams always seem to score soft tries against us. The try the Kano scored started with Habana being out of position, followed by Lood's moffie attempt at a tackle. How many times does Willie Le Roux still have to do a useless chip kick right down the throat of an opposition runner and then have our defensive lines in shambles.
Kriel stuffed up and was out of position and a try was scored against is in the softest of ways.
De Allende missed tackles when he was out of position. FFS, you can see, with the naked eye, players of other teams communicating with each other to plug the holes.
If you are in tune with the rest of the Pollard hype, then good for you. IMO, he did nothing special during the RWC. There were better fly halves than him on display. Forget about Carter. Biggar was better. Finn Russel of Scotland was better, IMO.
One game in one Craven Week does not reflect SA schools rugby by any means. It just shows the best on offer. Schools rugby in general, take note....... in general.  is not near where the few top rugby schools are, mate.
I will be the first to agree that I have not watched live, at the field schools rugby in the last five years, but I can assure you that I followed a lot of schools rugby until I left SA. And I mean actually attended the games from U/13 right up to first XV. That was until 2001, when my youngest was in matric. Thereafter we attended rugby games with friends who still had kids at school. So don't come waffle about the odd game that you have seen on TV or on You Tube. I was next to the field, watching all the games. And that was at normal school where the average schools rugby skills were on display. Not that of the elite few.
In addition, I was also involved in the management/admin of club rugby in SA for years, so I know and have witnessed a fair deal of that as well.

Oh what utter crap, defensive lines are breached by all sides at various stages, its not an issue reserved for SA backs alone. The Kaino try was scored from broken play....its a common call from all backs to rush out like Habana did when the attacking side has numbers - his call was a poor one as it had no effect, but on other occasions it will bare fruit. Lood's miss had stuff all to do with defensive lines and everything to do with a big man not being athletic enough to get himself in the right position to make a low tackle.....he is a monster lock, I can excuse that.

Willie executing a poor chip kick was the story of his world cup......that has stuff all to do with his skill level for an in form Willie a year ago would not have been making those calls - which I suspect were from the coach anyway.

Russell better than Pollard - what a joke. Biggar kicked better that's it - Pollard was far far better with ball in hand.

As for schools rugby, as I said you are speaking shit, the skill level is better than it has ever been as school rugby these days is semi pro in terms of how much is put into it. I see that with my boy and his school here in the UK cannot begin to compare with the ones back home.

And no, I am not talking one game......I mentioned 3.......one can watch many school games on Youtube and I can assure you schools rugby in SA is alive and well. The skills displayed are better than they have ever been......its a natural progression. And yes Youtube footage will tell you as much as you need to know, you don't need to be on the side of the field in order to formulate an opinion.

The issue in SA rugby is the conservative style of play advocated by coaches like Meyer, Ludeke, Drotske, Coetzee and Gold. The way the game should be played is the one employed by the Lions, where skill levels abound.

Its difficult for backs to express themselves when the priority is to take contact and structured phase play.

The skill levels are not the issue, the issue is depriving the players of the freedom to express themselves. Ackers delivers on this front, as does new coach Marais of the Bulls. No doubt Jones will do the same with the Stormers, if Japan is anything to go by.

You are barking up the wrong tree

"Oh what utter crap, defensive lines are breached by all sides at various stages,....." True, but nit due to have a look again. How many times were tries scored through gaps caused by defending players just not being there.
"....its a common call from all backs to rush out like Habana did when the attacking side has numbers.... "But the do not leave gaps as wide as  barn doors when they do that.
"his call was a poor one as it had no effect, but on other occasions it will bare fruit. "It did. That call, combined with Lood's moffie tackle resulted in 7 points against us.

"Lood's miss had stuff all to do with defensive lines and everything to do with a big man not being athletic enough to get himself in the right position to make a low tackle.....he is a monster lock, I can excuse that."It is quite not as if he was trying to tackle a small winger like Shane Williams. Kano is only four inches shorter that Lood and 7 kilos lighter. That is a kak excuse TBH. No, Lood's attempt at a tackle was just utterly crap.
"Willie executing a poor chip kick was the story of his world cup..."He hasn't executed one poor chip kick during the RWC. He has been stuffing them up constantly over some time now. I cannot help it if you are so blinded by the one or two times that it results into something, that you do not notice the numbers of times that it ends up in a ball of crap.
Name a the number of times that Pollard has done anything really spectacular in this RWC. In fact, you can try it for the entire 2015, if you really want to.
You are dreaming about schools rugby, mate. The average SA schoolboy is way behind the average NZ schoolboy, IMO. Note.... average schoolboy. Not the elite few that you see in You Tube clips. In any case. That is my opinion, whether you like it or not. I am not forcing you to agree with me either. I could not give a sh!t and I am certainly be slitting my wrists over it.

This is the BS that streams from this guy like lava.  He saw some school matches in 2001 in SA and that according to him turned him into an expert on school rugby in SA.  He did not say which schools were playing either.  But one thing can be sure -it would not be the recognized top rugby schools in South Africa - but that obviously is not important - Witgatwortelfontein Primary vs Hondeklipbaai Primary is all that is needed for him to become an expert in School rugby in SA.
He also is an expert in school boys and from his extensive experience he is able to make the statement that the average SA school boy is way behind the average NZ school boy.  It took him years of dedicated study to make that statement.
This summarizes the BS this clown put up on this site constantly pretending that what he write is factual.  No wonder he deserved his nickname of Dofdoos with distinction.

Ou cerundunce windpomp is all at sea. Watch schoolboy rugby and the first thing that comes to mind is shat happens to these guys. Answer dumb coaches. Cerudunce windpomp be assurred had the matfild penalty not been reversed we would have won the match. Just like we would have won the test here in DA if mcheats illegal try had not been given dispite Schalk calling for a review. Just like Scotland would have beaten the wobblies but for craigs error and not using the TMO. There are huge problems with rugby in SA - and in many aspects of life - but when it comes to skills dumb senior coaches are largely to blame. It has often been said and proved with Stats that Superr 15 firm does not necessarily define test form. The Bok"lost"by 2 points due to the reversal of the matfiled penalty issue If stampkar rugby were not our policy the team had the ability to beat the wee abs by 20 points at least. So while it is unfortunate A Yob from down under shafted us sticking to the get the Jarpy agenda, the " loss" might just galvinse us to return to traditional Bok rugby snd NOT THIS NONSENSICAL DOM BULLE RUGBY. The nutter then also makes derogatory remarks about the outstanding Lood! SO WE SEE OU WINDPOMP NOT UNDERSTANDING THE ISSUES AT ALL BUT GIVEN HE SUPPORTS THE BULLE THERE OUGHT TO BE NO SURPRISES!!!

Case one -after an IQ test showing a point count of 150 he said to the interviewee - "Come back after the interview - I m sure that there are lots of issues we can discuss"
Case two - the IQ test shows 1`30 points and he said that the guy will find his feet in the world of finance and can go to the top economists and be of use in discussions with them.
Case 3 - IQ test result 60 - so the professor said "Go and join the Bulls Supporters Club - you will feel at home there".

Vlag......tries are always scored through defenders not being there or being beaten......that is rugby. Are you trying to say this is an issue relating to SA in isolation.......wrong, our backs defensive stats were on par with the rest of the backs in the WC. You are wrong.

Yes other backs do leave barn doors open when the rush fails.......reality is, our two worst culprits are old boys Jean and Habana when it comes to the rush.

Lood is 6'9 and 125kg, Kaino is 6'5 ish and 114kg and more athletic, which you would expect from a flanker. Given Lood is a lump and not exactly fleet footed, he will at times struggle to get into position to effect a tackle. His miss was poor but I can appreciate that given his size.....one thing we cannot question is his defensive abilities which the stats confirmed were amongst the best in the WC......pretty remarkable given his size. Lood is never going to be able to adjust in time or always get into position to effect a tackle on a player that is quicker and more athletic than him and who finds himself in space......same would apply to any of our locks or props.

Willie has had a very average WC, but he is clearly playing under instruction to kick, which is away from his strengths. Meyer plays a kicking game, hence bringing Kirchner into the squad and having du Preez and Pienaar as his 9's. Meyer has failed Willie in a big way and deprived us of our greatest striking threat.

Pollard was better than any other 10 in the WC at breaking the advantage line when taking the ball flat. I cant name specific moments, but I know he beat defenders in this fashion a number of times.

Disagree 100% regarding the skill level of NZ vs SA kids, evidenced in the fact that NZ, SA and England dominate the annual u20 JWC every year. The skill levels of the kids get better and better, its a natural progression, especially given the semi pro approach that is now evident in school boy rugby and the way scouting and player movement is rife in the school system. Specialist rugby coaches are employed in schools these days, gone are the days that a teacher just takes the 1st team.

You always have the wrong end of the stick.  Our problem has never been with the schools rugby - there is talent in abundance on that level.

As for schools rugby, as I said you are speaking [removed], the skill level is better than it has ever been as school rugby these days is semi pro in terms of how much is put into it.

Yes, I know that the article seems to be about doping in schools but it goes deeper, for those who care to actually read everything that John Mitchell has said in the article.
Doping at school worries Mitchell

Cape Town - Former Lions, Western Force and All Blacks coach John Mitchell believes South Africa’s obsession with size is causing rugby players to start doping as early as schoolboy level.

Mitchell, via a column for Vodacom Rugby, has expressed his concern for what he fears is a growing trend in the modern game, with South Africa not excluded.

“In South Africa, doping is an issue that starts at schoolboy level. The game is taken very seriously and players are often put under pressure to perform from parents and coaches alike,” Mitchell wrote.

“Fundamentally, the problem in South Africa is that so much emphasis is placed on the size of players. The perception in this country is that you have to be big in order to become a professional rugby player - it’s no wonder schoolboys want to bulk up.

“Having worked with South African players across all age-group levels, I have found that there’s more of a focus on stationary weight training and getting into a gym than conditioning and basic fundamentals such as catch and pass, which is practiced in New Zealand.”

Mitchell believes it’s important that the game’s governing body and national rugby unions to continually educate players about the pitfalls of ingesting drugs and what is on the banned substances list.

“While some players intentionally dope, at times it’s genuinely unintentional - for instance through the use of an asthma pump or supplements,” Mitchell continued.

Vlag, you are wasting your time, you're not going to penetrate Dave's most arrogant  bonehead....for that you need a reinforced titanium drill bit. Facts are as you've pointed out, the ills of SAFFA rugby is manifested in the early ages.

So, obviously you do not have an intelligent counter argument to what John  Mitchell is saying about coaching in SA schools.........................?

The real excitement for me here and the disappointment will be the verification of the Saffa coaching saga...my expectations are obvious...Eddie Jones and Ackermann to put life and direction into saffa rugby and bring out the best in even mediocre players whist my tragic Sharks stars (at least what's left) and imported hasbeens to be made a dog's breakfast of by the clowns running the Natal circus.
