@ CC We also have a black girl and three harlequins.

Pity that most judges aren't able to look past the coloration of harlequins and tend to favor blacks and fawns due to it being easier to make out their structure.

I have 2 Merle's and a Fawn. Never competed with any of them though. Was very tempted though but they're all over 5 years old now.

I've had 2 Black Danes before as well as a Harlequin with one blue eye.

That is a huge dog!!! Plum and CC, I know the answer is going to be somewhat biased, but aren't Great Danes supposed to be the stupidest bree d of dog? What is your experience? 
Got me a pair of Labs. The most fantastic dogs! Clever, loyal, intuitive and gentle, but they make the worst guard dogs! Way too friendly! 

bluebok, my current Lab and the one I had before have both been brilliant watchdogs. No training at all but they patrolled the property and only really made a big noise when they needed to.

They are the best family dogs and as you say, loyal, clever and very gentle with kids. The only downside of Labs is that thick tail which knocks everything on the coffee table over . . . oh and the fact that they jump into any water they find when you're walking them and then shake themselves dry all over strangers.

I can't imagine ever not owning a Lab.

CC my lady does compete. But she's only get back into it after some years out. I'll upload a pic of the black girl in a few months when she's filled out a bit.

My partner must take all the credit. She is the breeder. I only take credit for fetching the stud spunk from the airport occasionally. Surprisingly often much lower tech than one would think. Literally a polystyrene cooler with a blue ice brick and a test tube inside. Oh the glamour.

Bluebok he'll put on another 10/12kgs which'll bring him to 85kg or so. Its not true that Danes aren't smart. In fact one could argue that mindless obedience of the kind delivered by collies and labs is a sign of lower intelligence. A dane owner would say that danes are smart enough to question. As you predicted, biased.

Put a large prey animal in front of a group of danes who have never met before and you'll be stunned at how instinctively they fall in line, allocate roles and commence the take down. 

We have some other dogs, one of which is a German Shepard, and is probably the smartest dog i know. Learned by chance, in one session, without any instruction how to be a gun dog. Now, I pick up the air rifle and he immediately stands next to me and starts scanning for rabbits. Won't run until i shoot. Hows that for intuition(what i consider to be intelligence)? He is a sport breed though, so. Also a veritable man-work beast. Convinced the breeder snuck 1/8 malinois into him.

I like Great Danes but I don't think I would ever own one because of their short life span.

@Rooi Yeah man, just how it is. You can ride them to work though. So there's that.

Yup Rooi, can't imagine life without Labs. Actually smiled when you mentioned the thick tail and water....so true! I actually love any large breed, Danes included, but the unfortunate truth is, the bigger the dog, the shorter the life. What i can't stand is yappy little ankle biters. I just don't get little dogs....especially the fluffy type that are petrified of vicious things like butterflies! 

Well, I don't know if you'd classify him as a little dog but I also have a French Bulldog. A wonderful companion who hardly ever barks or yaps and with so much character. 
My Frenchie grew up with a Lab so he swims which is very unusual for the breed. He is also a better retriever than any Lab or Golden Retriever. Other retrievers might go further and faster to fetch things but I'd back my little guy against any dog for persistence. My Lab will fetch a stick maybe three or four times and then lose interest. My Frenchie has never ever failed to fetch anything I throw. Ever. I reckon he'd carry on fetching the whole day!

 
Labs are excellent woofs. I grew up with them and can quite honestly tell you that my choice of pooch in the end was between the Great Dane and the Labrador.

I enjoy kids and can think of no better companion for them than these two awesome animals. They'll both give their lives for you.

Many a Dane has received an award for bravery. 

The only difference between the two as far as I can tell is that the Great Dane tends to swipe things off kitchen counters and study desks. Their thick tails tends to miss everything below hip height. 

The Great Dane is known to have a short life span. I myself am fortunate enough to never having  experienced that as all my Danes have gone past 12 years old. I presume it's because of the food I give them them and the heeps of daily exercise ... or maybe just lucky.

Either way I am blessed to have them for whatever time span they give. 

I saw some footage somewhere of what I think was a French Bulldog chasing two bears off the property. Hilarious stuff. Either very bold ... or very stupid. Cute as hell though.

The Dane may not be on the same level as a Lab but they're not very far behind. Smart enough to work a water dispenser. I wonder if Dense has managed that yet?

Yeah ... the Lab was bred to retrieve water fowl and so love taking the plunge.

The Dane on the other hand was bred to hunt boar in Germany.

Any way ... I've taken the day off. It was my birthday yesterday. Fifty friggin four. Can't believe it. I'm going to cut lawn and have me a few cold ones later.

Dogo Argentino and Fila Brazileiro. 
The Brazilian one was bread to capture escaped slaves but not injure them. It'd so by tracking them and then sitting on them until help arrived. 

Klown, I'm not giving my actual birth date. Apart from not wanting to give out personal information, I hate being wished Happy Birthday!

No worries, we have more than 15 years before we're Moffie's age. Hope that when I turn 70 that I behave like a 70 year old rather than a 7 year old!

Both of those are on a list of the top 10 most dangerous dogs. Stunning animals. Probably eat every other dog in the neighbourhood ... and my gardener. I see the Dane cracked the list at 10th. 

Maybe I should get me one for the day and invite Mozart around. Do you think he'll come?

Fair enough, Redneck ... and at least have bladder control.

 The Filas have hectic temprements,  it the Dogo, despite looking like a pittie makes a great family dog. The dogo's breed and how it came about is a great story.
