Things don't look good for next year.
Willie is on the decline....his playbook is well known.
There are no test quality wings coming through....none, nada, zippo.
There are no impactful new centres. Kriel will never be an adequate defender at centre, he is a Willie replacement.
Allende will tractor on, half adequate....not reading attacking structures, taking the ball at snail's pace. Perhaps a proper coach will teach him how to cut onto the ball....but that's a perhaps.
At flyhalf we have Pollard and that's it.
Scrumhalf there are no replacements for F du Preez. Faf could play a bench role.
At loosehead Nyakane and Kitshoff are test props....if not as dynamic as the young Beast.
Strauss is the man for the next four years at hooker and up there with the best.
At tighthead the barking dogs think Malherbe is the answer after par scrumming against the Welsh Wallie and second choice props from NZ and Bargie. He was never tested and will fail against a dynamic loosehead. Marcel is worse and Coenie is worse as well. We have no tightheads.
At 4 we have Eben and Lomp as his sub. We are solid there.
At 5 we have Stephanie our biggest flop of the WC...we have no 5s so Lomp will have to do....but it's not good.
6 is supposed to be Jaco Kriel. I'm not convinced, but it's the only shot we have. Brussouw can't do it....Coetzee as I always pointed out is neither a 7 or a 6, an effort player without skills.
We have no 7s. Players like du Plessis will be shredded by the NZ backs. There is no new Alberts, no new power runner.
At number 8 Vermeulen is head and shoulders above our other loosies. It's a shame he willl have to ply his trade with such poor support.
This bleak picture can be improved a bit by soldiering on with a few of the veterans, but they wont make the next four years. So we desparately need a few new Etzebeths or Pollards. But I don't see them on Dave's long lists....just a few worthy internationals and a long line of provincial players.

Willie had my backing for a long time. It seems the longer he played under Meyer the worse he got. Not sure Kolbe is the answer though.
I feel Faf can do the job for a long time. Just needs to look up a tad more.
How come Julian Redlinghuys didn't get a mention Mozart? Not a fan? I rate him.
I take it you are happy with 6,7 and 8?
Agree on Strauss. Hope he gets the armband actually.
Yeah, Pollard. Man I hope he doesn't become the next Fransie. He already has that same look in his eye. Lambie has never cut it for me. Thoughts on Titan Schoeman? Jantjies?

I wonder how Eddie Jones will do at the Stormers.
From his press releases, he sounds confident that skills can be taught to South African players- or any crash ball players for that matter.
If Donkey Potgieter was transformed at the Waratahs will he revert to being a donkey under Gary Gold at the Sharks.
Eddie Jones says that Eben Ezebeth and other SA players do not know how to pass.So he is indirectly saying that SA coaches are not skills coaches- just set piece experts. Just creating bulked up donkeys that lose their skills as junior players.
This could be a good direction for SA rugby. The coaching at backline level needs to be changed.
Recently Brendon Venter criticized Jake White for a conservative game plan.
This is the coaching handbook for SA teams when playing international teams. All SA coaches do this. The talk an expansive game- but as soon as the pressure is on they revert to crash ball rugby

It might be a good idea down the track to make Eddie the national backline coach......what the hell has the gimmick MIA Rassie Erasmus done for SAFFA rugby? Jones would have the specific task of coaching all of the franchises at an academy focusing purely on backline play.

About Potgieter....Chieka was smart enough to give him a specific role which he understood and executed very well. Chieka understood that Potgieter is a very limited player but he needed a player to bring physicality to the Waratah game. Potgieter remains a plodder with poor handling ball skills not to be utilized for anything else but his hard hitting ability.

Willie has been in decline for quite some time. Noticeably he was in decline at the Cheetahs as well as under Meyer and I'm not convinced the Meyer should cop any of the blame...ultimately it comes down to the player. Seriously, do you blame Meyer for his pap out of hand kicking? or his rubbish chip kicks when in the opposition red zone? or his headless takes under the high ball?

This is an utter BS assessment by a person with no rugby knowledge whatsoever. Springbok rugby went into serious decline more than a 15 months ago with the serious decline in performance ability of most of the so-called senior players favoured by the delusional Mozart and his co-idiots,
The problem here is that Meyer insisted upon a game plan that is utterly predictable and has been out of date after 2008. That same game plan has provided for the retention of [layers long after their sell-by date - players who already in 2011 showed their incompetence, but who were supported by Mozart and co as the only game in town. The resultant decline set in during 2014 already and the selection of the Springbok squad for the latest WC was a serious joke. Losing against Argentina and Japan was a clear indication that the decline was serious and that there is a need for team renewal - bearing in mind that the experienced players were the failures in the team in those two tests.
Now lets deal t\with the squad selection for this WC. Of th experienced players Mozart and co supported 90% were in fact failures. I would say only Burger and to a much lesser extent Du Preez got pass marks in the latest WC campaign. Because Meyer did not work on the development of a proper squad over the past three years - we ended up with a squad comprising senior player who should never have been in the squad because of deficient performances and of inexperienced players. Fact is the negative assessment is to be expected from a person who wrote that 90% of the function of a flyhalf is to kick away balls - that it is better to hand possession of the ball to the opposition and not use backline play at all - that Meyer's game plan is correct in all respects and his teams election is spot on and that stampkar rugby is to be played.
However, lets get back to what was produced by the existing team since Jue 2014. Now lets assess the BS Mozart flooded this site with again:-
Willie is in decline
The problem is that there were no skilled backline players around - with De Villiers on the decline after a good year in 2013. Willie became the only hope after 2013 and since he was the only one who tried to do something and is not an ideal Meyer full back by trying to play attacking rugby, it is easy for opposing teams to isolate him since there was nobody else to worry about by opposition teams. With a better backline in evidence and a need to get away from kicking balls away aimlessly, it may mean an improvement in the situation insofar as Le Roux is concerned anyway,
Wings
Mozart is living in the past and that is a fact, Habana was a huge asset even three years ago and definitely is a brainy player - but his physical ability has declined with time, Pietersen was really in serious decline over the past two years - and had a really problematic pace deficiency, There was nobody groomed to replace these two wings and they became progressively less effective.
Because of the Meyer problem of never looking at the future we have a situation where we simply do not know where to go with wings n future. I have to say that there are in fact better wings playing in SA than the two players mentioned by Mozart produced in the past year.
The replacement of those two players at their prime was unthinkable - at this stage of their careers any replacement will not weaken the team.
Centers
The following comments from Mozart is a serious joke from a person who champion the selection of the useless Frans Steyn at 12 and the equally and even worse Juan de Jongh as centers:-
"Allende will tractor on, half adequate....not reading attacking structures, taking the ball at snail's pace. Perhaps a proper coach will teach him how to cut onto the ball....but that's a perhaps."
The tractoring rubbish indicates the BS Mozart and co has spread about De Allende. The game plan in the WC was tompass the ball to a stand-in flyhalf (Burger) and the few time De Allende got the ball he was in traffic. He according to Mozart had to do the impossible and run at speed under such circumstances,
De Allende is rated as one of the best centers in World rugby and is consequently identified by opposing teams as a threat - so he will get less space than was accorded to players like De Villiers. Yet De Allende breaks more tacjles and provide more forward foing balls and that is proven statistically as well.
De Allende is a huge improvement on what we havd at 12 in 2014. Before the WC he had only 3 tests playing at 12 and he is going to improve massively with further experience and a game plan not catering for stampkar rugby only.
The real problem is that we have not settled on a 13 at all - but there are good players for that position as well and we will have to see what would be the best combination.
The scrummies
Du Preez was a great scrummie three years ago - but at present he is barely adequate. He slowed down and although he still is a clever player his physicality is gone. Pienaar is a total inadequate at present.
I would not worry too mcuh about th scrummie issue as a source for decline becaause the candidates are better than Pienaar and basically on par with the present Du Preez insofar as performence is concerned.
The props
Mozart has been on an anti - Malherbe a\campaign for the past year not because of his eprformance - he was better than Jnnie - but because he was a selection threat to Mozart;s national treasure. What cpomes out here is a garbled effort to try and discredit Malherbe after two good performances on the WC. There is no problem with Malherbe - he is a far better player in scrumming and in play outsider of scrumming than Jannei was over the past two years.
Hookers
Bismarck and Strauss will be around for another year or two - but there are other youngsters like Marx cp,imng through and I do not think that the picture is as gloomy as Mozart gives it out top be.
Locks
The worst thing Meyer ever did was to bring back Matfield as a lock. We have the best locks availabe in world rugby and Matfield is not a loss - but a huge advantage.
Loosies
Next to not having Matfield in future the nest thing to happen to the Springboks is not having Alberts as a loosie in future. he was utterly useless over the past three years and is not a loosie at all, A low work rate player. There has consistently been better loosies in SA than Alberts and he is no loss. There are ten better loosies - and I mean real loosies - better than Alberts in SA and the fact that he was in the Springbok squad was a koke in bad taste.
In evaluating what Mozart came up with above - it is his constant hate campaign against certain players and the real issue is that he does not know what is required form players performance-wise and what is in fact happening because of a defective game plan used by Meyer in the WC.
My best advice to Mozart is to forget about his favourites like Fat Fransie and AWOL de Jongh and start looking objectively at the future. His hate campaign against certain players - rated highly by others and not by him and his co-idiots - is a joke and that will not be the weakening factor he forecast.

Mozart
My best advice to you is to get out of the past and find some players worthy of support based on performance and forget about the reputation players supported by you and who in the end was not up to standard anymore.
Your doomsday prophesies based on personal dislike of some players - purely because they keep your discredited favourites out of selection and showed up how really bad your favourites turned out to be in the WC, is in fact childish and a reflection of deficient knowledge of what went wrong over the past 15 months and needs t6o be corrected.
Your tendency to criticize players before you actually ahve seen them play is a joke as well.

I am not all that desperate about Le Roux. He did have been out of position in the Welsh test, but insofar as the high ball catching is concerned he was fine in the semi. He made one very poor kick.
Fir the rest yes - Meyer insisted on a kicking game and not in passing the ball. He did what he was told to do and was not good n carrying it out.
Meyer even forbid off-loads of balls - Vermeulen said it clearly - not once, but twice.
Most o f the backline problems of the Springboks had nothing to do with the players and everything to do with a stiinkingly poor game plan they had to play according to.

Mozart ... there really is no need to be so pessimistic.
Your coach failed and he failed with the elderly you so love.
Where we are now is where we should have been in 2012 ... but instead of easing the young talent in, we're now forced to make some drastic changes.
We could have been sitting with a young team ... each with 30 test caps.
Sadly Meyer chose to rely on the elderly and not to blood the youngsters ... and because of it we're forced to select a young inexperienced squad.
How you missed that is beyond me. One would have thought that a knowledgeable person such as yourself would have looked toward the future ... but I guess in your attempt to support the elderly you forgot that there was a future ... and that it belonged to the young.
Do not try to make out as though we have no talent in the country. We both know that that's not true.
Yes ... they may need test experience ... but who's fault is that?
A team such as
1. Thomas Du Toit, 2. Bismarck Du Plessis, 3. Vincent Koch, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 5. Pieter Steff Du Toit, 6 Jaco Kriel (cpt), 7. Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 9. Faff De Klerk, 10. Patrick Lambie, 11. Jamba Ulengo, 12. Harold Vorster, 13. Rohan Janse Van Rensburg, 14. Seabelo Senatla, 15. Cheslin Kolbe
16. Trevor Nyakane, 17. Adrian Strauss, 18. Ruan Dreier, 19. Paul Willemse, 20. Piet van Zyl, 21. Handre Pollard, 22. Dries Swanepoel, 23. Ruan Combrinck
can most certainly challenge the top dogs within a year.
We will more than likely see additional talent coming through next season, who instead of being left on the side lines can be brought in to challenge for a spot in the match 23.
There is hope ... and lots of it.
It all starts with the coach.

@ Denny - You are probably right, it's not Meyers fault. It's just that Willie started out so well, and of the early Meyer picks, Le Roux has probably played the most games. Again, this doesn't say much other than he has spent a good amount of time under Meyer.
I just don't understand how a player can decline like that. Maybe getting figured out by the opposition? But yes, that doesn't explain poor kicking.
Gotta disagree on being poor under the high ball. I felt the mishap against Wales was more of an over confidence issue. Other than that he has been responsible for some amazing takes under serious pressure. I'll stress, my memory is not perfect
Some red players that could be an answer to Moz's problems. Jantjies, Kriel, Faf, Combrink. I feel they should all get a shot for the Boks. Jantjies was our best 10 in s15. Kriel and Faf, well it's clear as day that they should be there. Also, still have confidence in Redlinghuys.
Faf, Jantjies/Pollard/Schoeman, De Allende, Kriel, Combrink. That's be my pick. Combrink being the oldest of the bunch, i think.
It makes me wanna cry when i think we had our very own Lomu and Meyer wasted him by making him hit the gym and and turning him into an 8. Ya'll know who i'm talking about.
We've been so screwed over by bad selections and horrible game plan that it's almost hard to see the light. So I kinda see where Moz is coming from, though i don't fully agree.
PS, i'm not a Lions fan but i do love them and feel they got the short end of the stick

Mozart's main problem is his animosity against any players who posed a threat to his favourites - all from the 2007 or even earlier WC's. He refused to accept that those players failed already in 2011 and as CC said as quoted by plum above.
I am not necessarily bound by provincial loyalties and would rather see the performance in Super Rugby before making comments about successors. Whereas Meyer never looked at performance as a norm for selection and he was strongly supported by Mozart in that - Meyer looked at reputation only and that was a recipe for disaster.
A different approach is necessary and we need to look again at the players from franchises and see how they perform on that level. That would be my norm and I stick with that norm - I have always said age is not material, performance is. So lets look objectively at performance in future and also at a positive game plan and not stampkar rugby - so well described by Eddie Jones recently.

Yes we all thought he was brilliant...and he wa,s but the magic kind of evaporated and we haven't seen it since....not at the Cheetahs or the RC or at the RWC, His chipkicks in general are dreadful...what half decent attacking player does chip kicks when in the opposition red zone. Cry me a river that's a no-no. As for he takes under the highball, please revisit the semi final of the RWC...I think he started off alright and then went south. As for his out of hand kicks....man he put his team under a crap load of pressure.

I can tell you that Harold Vorster is going to be one of the first names on my Fantasy Rugby team sheet and if he can make the same impact he made last year then De Allende, Serfontein, and co will all be fighting for the #13 jersey.
17 Nov 2015, 11:47#19
Thanks, Redneck!!
Vorster is the best 12 in the country in my opinion. I'm glad you rate him too.
Jansen van Rensburg is a bit of a dark horse ... I know ... I was pushing it a bit by selecting him at 13 ... BUT ... what I've seen of him he'll be hard to stop, has awesome power, runs great lines and has a relatively good step.
You think De Allende is a 13? I suppose he could be ... much like Kurindrani ... still, I really like the look of Rohan. I hope Ackerman gives him plenty game time next season.
What do you think of Kolbe at 15? Not too small perhaps?

You are not alone with having Harold Vorster as a center as a cheap buy - he is in fact the top of my list of buys.
There are as a matter of fact some other cheap buys we will have to get and one of those will be EW Viljoen. I suspect he will be one of the first picks of Eddie Jones at 15.
I do not think that De Allende will have to fight for the 13 jersey - he owns the no 12 jersey. My ideal center pairing in fact would be De Allende and Vorster - with Kriel as another option at 13.
We will have to wait for another month to know what is going to happen to Meyer - but I am getting the feeling that he may be a goner - since his game plan is archaic as was his selections for the World Cup side.

Mozart was going on about his normal jeremiads and all about the same players. You will not see anything about what he really favours for selection against the players he mentioned.
However, in another post he fvours the center pairing of Steyn and De Jongh - so that explains to you that one.
The other player he mentioned as a long term rpospect for the 2019 RWC is Strauss - who would be 34 years or very near to it by the time the WC is held - that apparently is Mozart ideal age for a Springbok player - bugger performances - that does not count.
I am not too troubled about his missing of Matfield and his moaning about De Jager - the man is a fool when it comes to player performance assessment.
The other player Mozart mentioned as to be replaced in Alberts - the worst loosie in Super 15 over the last three years and the a disgrace in tests - but that counts for nothing with Mozart. Any player from a long list of candidates would be an improvement on what that one actually delivers in games.
I think we are in for a long period of moaning by Mozart and harking back to the "greats' and "not so greats" Mozart admires so much.

Thomas du Toit was a liability in the last S15....Koch destroyed by the Bargies.

Your assessment of players is a screw-up - completely false. Du Toit was npot as bad as Matfield was in the WC - he got very little playing time and had to be the lock and the loosie while Matfield was doing bugger-all standing around in the backline, in the one game Du Toit played in. The only lock that was embarrassing bad in the WC was in fact Matfield.
I do not go along with the team suggested by CC - there are too many problem cases in that team. I do think that his props are not the ideal ones to start.
You talk about players being poor - but never admitted that they cannot be as poor as some of the experienced people you so ardently supported were over the last year. They were heroes of the past who turned sour and became so poor they should not have been anywhere near the Springbok squad.
If you are not prepared to admit that the worst players in the WC w ere in fact the experienced players - then we can admit that what you write about the players you criticized above may have some merit. Until then your contributions are worthless hate speak.

I am always surprised about the huge difference in opinion on the issue of selections. I think this trait has developed as a result of the serious discord because of Meyer's attitude as coach. That discord goes much wider than this forum and invludes ex-Boks and their public statements on selection issues,
According to what has been proved and confirmed by his own remarks Meyer picked players not on the basis of proven performance - but on the basis of reputation. Too often Meyer publicly stated that " I know what players are capable of". That is why there was a string of players in the WC squad who had virtually no rugby for a longs as 14 months before the announcement of the squad for the RWC.
That attitude divided the general public in two groups - the Meyer adherents, who believe in his selections and his opponents who think that performance and not reputation should be the norm for selection. The poor record of the Springboks over the last 16 months added to the problems and the storm on the Meyer issue has not subsided - but got stronger over recent months,
The issue is so bad that the intention of SARU to extend Meyer's coaching contract became a battlefield in itself and SARU tried to run for cover after the storm broke into a fierce public battle. SARU became aware of the widespread public disenchantment with not only Meyer's selections - but his game plan as well. There is a constant threat that public disenchantment will affect attendance of the public of future tests and the pocket of SARU would be hit as happened in the case of the Sharks last year.
The root issue is that if a team is successful the coach becomes less controversial - if a team fails - the coach gets the blame. That blame is reaching boiling point and even his adherents on this site is running for cover. The AB's was the top team in virtually the whole of the last decade - so it is less controversial in NZ than it is in SA.
The issue on this site remains a problem as well. The Meyer supporters refuse to admit that they were wrong about the majority of Meyer's reputation selections and refuse to admit that the game plan used by Meyer is an atrocity. Their defense is based not on the basis of performance but in efforts to denigrate other candidates who should have been considered on the basis of actual performance.
Part of the problem is that some members think that anyone disagreeing with them is a fool/idiot and that the best way to handle disagreement is personal attacks on their opponents.
In SA there has developed a general distrust in authority - whether in Government of the country or in other fields of public interest and that distrust is reaching alarming levels of uncertainty and affecting the economy adversely as well.

No Mike, this is not unique to the Meyer era. This vehement discord regarding players and selections has been going on for at least the last two decades. Just about every SA rugby fan think themselves a better coach and selector than whoever is in charge.

Um ... Mozart ... not sure why your patting yourself on the back.
It's pretty much obvious that HouGat, Reinach, Coetzee, Jantjies, JJ, Lomp, Coenie and Goosen were not test options to consider. Most of us saw that right off.
Thing is though ... neither are Morne Steyn, Fat Fransie, Jannie Du Plessis, Victor Matfield, Ruan Pienaar, Gurthro Steenkamp, Bakkies Botha, Willem Alberts, Juan De Jongh, Jaque Fourie and many others you assessed as world beaters.
You keep on putting your foot in your mouth. Why is that?
I would say that your so called accurate assessment of players and coaches need a little work ... wouldn't you?

There has always been differences of opinion about who should be selected, but it never reached the level it is at present, where dissenting in the media and in TV broadcasts has reached the public level that is in evidence at present.
There never was a case when previous Springbok captains has gone public in a campaign to prevent re-appointment of Meyer as a coach as happened at present. There may have been criticism of coaches - bar for non-rugby related issues - but not the present rugby-related issues that is being raised iro Meyer. Any criticism of Meyer has never reached the levels in evidence at present.
The core of the criticism centers around squad selection and playing strategy and to deny that Meyer left himself open to criticism is just not realistic.
