Jan Serfontein makes a welcome return to the Vodacom Bulls side to face the DHL Stormers in their crucial Vodacom Super Rugby match at Newlands on Saturday.

The Springbok midfielder returns from a hip flexor injury that has seen him miss three games, and replaces the in-form Burger Odendaal for the game which could go a long way to determining the winner of the South African conference.

Odendaal starred in Serfontein’s absence, scoring two tries and showcasing his talents as the Bulls went to the top of the standings in the conference, but is suffering with a hamstring strain and returned to training on Thursday.

However, it was decided not to risk him, hence the decision to leave him out of the match day 23 as the Bulls made two changes to the side that beat the Cell C Sharks.

Coach Frans Ludeke said that Serfontein was chomping at the bit to get onto the field.

“Jan is sorted out with the injury and he can’t wait to come and add to the cause. He is very excited about what the team did in his absence so he’s looking forward to this weekend’s confidence.

“We always had good communication with both players and they always knew what would happen if there was an injury. With the injury it was always the case that Jan would come in and Burger is in the mix, he falls out of the 23 this week because of the injury.”

The other change sees Piet van Zyl being elevated from the bench to the starting line up in the place of Rudy Paige, who limped off against the Sharks with knee ligament troubles, and is set to be out for a few weeks.

Van Zyl got the nod primarily because Francois Hougaard is in exceptional form on the wing and a decision was taken not to move him back to his normal position behind the scrum, thereby keeping the impressive back three together.

But it does mean that Hougaard will need to cover halfback if there is an injury, with the Bulls choosing rather to bring in veteran winger Akona Ndungane into the mix for his first start of the season. Ironically Ndungane’s last Super Rugby game was on July 5 last year against the same Stormers.

“Piet has been playing well every time he came off the bench. It’s more about the position, and Hougi is fine to come in at any time if we have an injury,” Ludeke said, “And it is also good to have Akona back, he’s an old head and he has returned from injury and understands what the contest will be about.”

The Bulls decided to keep the same forward pack, with the likes of Lappies Labuschagne and Arno Botha providing that impetus off the bench in the second half.

“Continuity builds confidence in the side, especially in the lineouts and in the scrum, we can almost provide a good platform and players who are in sync there,” Ludeke explained.

The Bulls coach also said his side was confident heading to Cape Town and even though they lost their opening fixture at Loftus at the start of the season against the same Stormers side, they back themselves this time out.

“We had a lot of players coming off injury in that game, but we’re a much better side now,” Ludeke said.

“We definitely have a more all-round game and that is what you will need to play away and be successful. They came together on the tour and had two tough games in New Zealand which they lost, they then pulled together and won the last two games.

“They’re a very direct team and they work hard on the gain line. We know what to expect, it will be up front for a quality base and delivery, and then the battle of the gain line will be crucial for momentum for both teams. That is where your penalties lies and the linebreaks that lead to tries, it has always been like that. Big moments, and the team that keeps their discipline will be the team that gets the result.”

Vodacom Bulls (with Super caps): Jesse Kriel (10), Francois Hougaard (81), JJ Engelbrecht (58), Jan Serfontein (33), Bjorn Basson (80), Handré Pollard (20), Piet van Zyl (52), Pierre Spies (c, 112), Jacques du Plessis (24), Deon Stegmann (88), Grant Hattingh (43),Flip van der Merwe (74), Marcel van der Merwe (26), Adriaan Strauss (113), Dean Greyling (62). Replacements: Callie Visagie (44), Morné Mellett (33), Trevor Nyakane (51), Arno Botha (26), Lappies Labuschagne (33), Akona Ndungane (108), Tian Schoeman (3), Jurgen Visser (29).

I think they would have stuck with Burger Odendaal had he not been injured. When Odendaal is back, will it be JJ or CrashballFontein that he replaces?

There was an interesting discussion on Boots&All tonight.  They had William Small-Smith as a guest commentator on the panel tonight.  He said that the days of crashballing and direct running into the first defender 9like Serfontein was instructed to do in the past) are gone and the need to have a more intelligent game i.n place are to/ be pursued in future.
That is where the situation would change and Serfontein's role in the broader game scenario will change.   Serfontein is not the real crashball type of player - he is intelligent and has skills that should be developed further.   The player that might find himself on the chopping block is JJ Engelbrecht - who is not an intelligent 13.
Taking JJ out of the team may happen when Small-Smith gets back after his injury.

Gosh, I wonder why the Bools never told Odendaal to crash ball it. The usual refrain from Moronic, the players are misled by the nasty coaches.

That process that Small-Smith referred to is being introduced step by step with the advance of the skills of the players concerned.  Your comments make me wonder whether you are ever sane enough to appreciate what is involved in rugby.
Your hatred of Serfontein is so overwhelming that you lose everything written and try and be clever - thus showing your stupidity/idiocy more and more.
Incidentally I can remember that Ludeke spoke extensively about the need to change the Bulls playing style earlier this year - and how you went bananas about that.
Maybe i t would show some thinking ability on your part if you do not comment on things you know nothing about.

De Allende will eat him for breakfast once again.

I think Frans Ludeke is off the mark here, Burger Odendaal is a fantastic centre who shows more promise than Serfontein.

Clevermike thanks for the update. I used to watch Boots and All every week since, so I have missed allot of .
It is good to hear the Bulls know they have to increase their handling skills. They played well last week, so could be on the right track.

Moronic would disagree Jerome ...according to him Steppie has been muzzled by poor coaching and he only crash balls because he has been told to do that and nothing else. But as we can observe Odendaal had no such restrictions, so it would be fair to assume a new Stepfontein will appear on Saturday.

You know I am critical of Serfontein as well - but I base my criticism on factual performances  - not on prejudice and information I cannot prove.  Unlike you stated above - I have consistently this year rated De Allende higher on performance than I did Serfontein, but unlike you I have never demeaned myself by giving him a nickname and carrying on about how bad he is.

On the contrary Moronic. The reason you are spluttering like a fish out of water, is because you are in a logical dead end. You claim the Bools forced Step to play crash ball, but Odendaal who replaced him expressed himself freely. So were there special rules for Odendaal, or was Step just coming off his outside foot and running into traffic....we all know the answer,  Odendaal wasn't given more liscence  than Step. Your view of this is just another Moronic fantasy.

As for prejudice you old coot, pluck the note out of your own eye.

Mozart
A player who come in to replace a player for a few matches may shine in one or two matches and is not subject to the restrictions imposed on squad members who are constantly coached to play a certain brand of rugby.  Odendaal made a favourable impression in two matches and not as favourable an impression in the third match.
You do not realize that it takes the opposition time to analyse what a player is up to and they work him out when he is becoming more visible.   However - Odendaal had a temporary advantage in two matches show the simpleton used two matches to determine that Odendaal is better than Serfontein.   Only a simpleton like you make that kind of judgement after one or two matches.  The long haul will determine whether that is the case or not.
So in which cases am I prejudiced against players on as false a basis you normally state your "opinions" on ?

Nice try.....you said the Bools forced Step to play crash ball. Odendaal played an expansive game. This is not about effectiveness.....it's about Odendaal playing a game you claimed the Bools wouldn't allow Step to play.
So either they allowed Odendaal more latitude, or your original premise was BS.

No coach is going to tell his Springbok inside centre that he can't express himself. This is just one more example of you pushing a position you want to believe. Now totally blown out the water. Enjoy your egg.

 Look Nitwit
To express a logical opinion on this site and then expect a logical response from you - is like looking for the impossible.   You are so pre-occupied with BS - you cannot think logically at all.
It is difficult to understand what is happening in rugby.  The game plan of the Bulls over the past decade was basically for -
*   the flyhalf to donkey kick the ball away and with the Morne Steyn failure in 2013 and his equally poor successors in the first part of 2014 was applied strictly; and
*   for the  no 12 center to crashball.
The above was the type of game plan  you in your idiocy support all out.
First of all supreme idiot - Ludeke announced a change in strategy less than two months ago.  This in the first instance came as a result of Pollard taking over as Bulls flyhalf this year -  he only has a few matches last year in Super 15 - coming from the bench in most cases.   However, Pollard took over as Bulls flyhalf this year and Pollard is not a kicking donkey in the mould of Morne Steyn and his successors.   So some change was forthcoming in any event.
When this was mentioned on this site - you went bananas - because it does not fit in with your petty idiocies.   However, it should be borne in mind that a change in the game plan takes time to work through, so as to allow the players to get used to a new playing requirements.    In the time since then Serfontein was injured after playing for four matches and that was not enough to wipe out two years of continuous drilling to play BS rugby.
You do not realise that and grabbed the two games played by Odendaal as another mechanism to attack Serfontein.  You do not realize that Odendaal was not subject to the regime ruling the Bulls game on Super 15 level and played a more natural game.  This was helped on by the fact that eh was unknown to the opposition - making it difficult for them to counter him.  His third game was not as successful as the other two were and the reason basically was his performances were  evaluated and counter-strategies produced.
If you were not so dim - you would have realized what is going on.  But dimness is your stock in trade so I think any further explanation would not help.
Just one other thing.  You made the following remark :-
"As for prejudice you old coot, pluck the note out of your own eye.'
I responded as follows:-
"So in which cases am I prejudiced against players on as false a basis you normally state your "opinions" on?"
I do not expect an answer from you since there is none.

Jan Serfontein is the new Wynkan Olivier. Good, but there will always be someone better ahead of him. Close but no cigar. I hope I'm wrong, but he has not yet realised the potential he showed us a few years ago. We really need top centers, but he is not there yet. I hope De Allende can make the step up at 12 for the Boks this year. If not, we are in dire straits.

Draad it hardly helped playing him out of position at 13 for the Boks....like Jean he was never going to work at 13.

Despite this fact he was still one of our best test backs last year and injury has stood in his way this year.

I hear people going on about Odendaal not crashing the ball.......well yes that was the case in his great first game this season, but resorted to the crashball in last weeks game.

Its the Bulls way and probably how 12's are instructed to play......the Bulls are all about physically imposing themselves.

You are wrong about Olivier, he was very good for the Bulls and lived in the shadow of Jean at test level, which is fair enough as Jean was better. Olivier after Jean is probably the best 12 we have seen in SA since readmission, probably alongside Pieter Muller.......he was certainly better than de Wet Barry.

At test level, he always lived off scraps playing off the bench, or out of position at 13 or on the wing......his time at 12 was limited and never at a stretch.

Olivier was a damn fine 12, but sadly for him Jean was better and the best we have had.

Never said Olivier was bad, just not the best. Same for Jan. As it stands, De Allende is better than Jan. Does not make Jan bad, makes him second best. I would not play De Allende at 13. He does well at 12, so I would keep him there. ATM Jan should be the 13 as there is no one else, but that's not ideal. We should art least try the best regular 13 at 13 for the boks, before trying to fill the gap with another good player played out of position.

Oliver was better than Jan Serfontein. His distribution game was much better.
Most inside centres in SA have outperformed Serfontein this season in the SuperXV.
So take the form inside centre in SuperXV rugby (delande), and play him out of position just so Jan Serfontein can play as well......????
Apparently Delane is being rated as the best inside centre in SuperXV in 2015. He is having more impact on the game than Sunny Bill Wiliams

Have to agree Mike. When we saw Jan at under 21 level and in his very early days for the Bulle he showed great vision and passing skills. Very smart operator. The dunce bulle turned him into a crashballer unfortunately.Thankfully it would appear that the bulle have realised their error of their ways and understand there is more to center play than crash balling.
It is a great pity jan went to the bulle. However we hope for the best and a better future.

How many times do I have to explain that the Bulls at last decided to change their game plan/playing style.   That kind of change do not come overnight - players must play for a while to get the new plan implemented - But Mozart every time came back with unbelievable simplicity.  Odendaal played for the Tukkies Varsity team and the Bulls Vodacom C up team - where he completely different style of rugby is played and he was more accustomed to play in the new playing environment than Serfontein was.
That and the fact that defenders soon learn what to do with newbies will look good for one or two matches and he would then be brought down to earth - which in fact happened in the third match he played in.
This kind of simplicity and lack of insight is not becoming from a  rugby supporter that should know better.

Jan is not the Bok incumbent,  he is the stop gap at 12 & 13. He is yet to prove himself at 12 against top notch test teams. There was a reason why Jean played 12 on attack and 13 on defence last year.

Yes Draad, Meyer started the season off with Delande at 13, with Jean at 12.
When the defence was exposed, Meyer dropped Delande for the makeshift Crashballfontein to improve defence. One thing I will give Serfontein is that his defence is probably the best out of any centre in SA at the moment.

Serfontein was a late withdrawal, Odendaal took his place in the starting lineup with Ndungane, Schoeman and Visser on the bench.
Odendaal was made ineffective against the Stormers, I honestly believe Serfontein would have done a much better job as he's a lot stronger and would have given the Bulls some much needed penetration.
