....that's to say, not that influential. Check his pathetic stats:

F Coetzee 0/0 0 0/3/12 3 0 1 1 2 12/4 0/0 0 0/0

Running he gains all of 3 metres in 12 attempts and his tackling at 12/4 wasn't secure at all. He also looked very sluggish on the Aplon try....where he failed to make the tackle. Not surprisingly our Board expert with the detached retinas thought he "cemented his case as our best loosie"..

Frankly yesterday I thought he was the worst loosie on the park by some margin. I confess, I'm having a hard time figuring out just how test ready this kid is.....despite my gushing take last week.

That just proves how misleading stats are. Coetzee had a fine game yesterday as he did against the Poms. I really have no time for stats........metres gained mean nothing......hell you could intercept the ball and run 50m and that would make you look wonderful in the stats books. Stats miss out on perspective and the circumstanes of each run/break/tackle etc

Every sport in the world uses stats to improve performance, you are in the dark ages.

Yes - stats are use as a means to determine and improve performance - but I also think that in rugby circles Coetzee is very highly rated - at this very early stage in his playing career he would make any national team in the world as a loosie.  H would definitely be selected ahead of players like McCaw and that in itself says a lot.   Insofar as that incident involving Aplon is concerned - I think that it is very difficult to stop a try by an extremely speedy guy by any forward player - good as he may be.

I specifically looked at Coetzee in the tighter phases of the games he played in - he really is tops.

Mike he had a great game against the Reds....I don't believe he had a great game against the Stormers. Just keeping things real.

the game on saturday was tight and hard. Kolisi, and Coetzee both had uncharacteristically tight games. They both played well. My pick of all the forwards on the park this weekend though would be Etzebeth. the kid was immense.
