No IPL contract was ever offered to Amla which indicates that he is not rated by the Indians in the shorter versions of the game.
This impression is being confirmed by the runs and strike rate of Amla in the present series:-
1st ODI - 34 runs from 59 balls - strike rate = 57,622nd ODI - 17 runs from 25 balls - strike rate = 68,003rd ODI - 5 runs from 12 balls - strike rate = 41.66
4th ODI - 7 runs from 9 balls - strike rate = 77,77
Total Score - 63 runs from 105 balls - strike rate = 60,00
Average score = 15,75 runs at a strike rate of below 4 rpo
Just not good enough - I am afraid.

Yeah, he is badly out of form at the moment, but it happens! He is a great player and he'll find form again. I don't rate him in the T20 format, but lets be honest, who really takes T20 seriously anyway?

To my mind Amla is a classical test player - one of the best in the world at present. In the case of T20 cricket he is just not on.
I also have serious doubts about ODI's in his case. He is out of form as you rightly point out - but Amla never was a fast batter on ODI level until near the end of the game - he always has a below par run rate. He picked up his strike rate late in games. With him as opener playing a slow strike rate - there are serious problems being heaped on De Kock. The latter repeatedly try to enhance the run rate to keep it on an acceptable level and that often result in De Kock going out too early.
Matter of fact - I would change the team and open with De Kock and Rillee Rossouw - and then have Du Plessis, De Villioers, Miller, Behardien and Duminy to follow. All the latter players - bar perhaps De Villiers - had problems when the run rate is too slow and their batting seems to struggle as a result.

What a stupid question.....its like asking if Senatla should play 7's rugby.
No-one should EVER question the credentials of Amla in any format of the game.....anyone who does is cricket ignorant.
Stuff his strike rate, what is his ODI average?

With and ODI average of 53 and a strike rate of 89 you have the audacity to question Amla's ODI credentials......fucking insulting Mike

This is hilarious - Much ois made of Amla's stats over a period - but wqhat is not even considered is the fact that in India - where they are playing at present his average is below 20 and in World cups it is below 25.
What makes it equally funny is that I was clearly referring to the sub-continent issue when I mentioned the IPL isue.
The other part is also clear. Amla is a very slow starter in ODI's and picks up his run rate in later overs when he bats at a much high run rate. He often bats for the first 15 to 20 overs at a rate even below 3 rpo. If he survives that early period he picks up his rate massively - often getting up to a rate of even 7 rpo.
However, that has caused problems in ODI's especially when chasing a high total. When a total of 6 rpo's is required and Amla bats at 3 to 4 rpo - the chasing situation gets out of control unless his batting partner bats at anything below 6 rpo. The total requirement soon moves up to over 8 rpowhich becomes an insurmuntable problem for the team.
It has often been said that SA is a poor run chaser outside of SA. The reason ios bound up at te rpo of players early on. Take th situation on Wednesday. Amla was at 4 runs after 7 balls - he made a good hit and they ran 3 runs The next ball he faced he was out.
Matter of fact the moment De Kock was out I said we have lost the ODI and only the heroics of De Villiers saved us an embarrassment.
Frankly - dunce - have you watched any of the ODI's this year and understand what was going on. I can understand that you may watch the games and do not comprehend anything - because comprehension is way beyond your mental capacity.
Back in SA - fine - in the sub-continent the question is fully justified.

A tboughtful bit of writing Mike. Certainly Amlas form is very concerning and his slow starts increase the pressure.
Unfirtunately it all went swiiish over snapster and cerudunce windpimps sloped foreheads!
How thankful I am the kbbs and JW in partucular dont discuss.cricket as things would only get worse.
wehehehehe!

Bollocks. You can write meaningless essays till the cows come home but there is no way how you can explain how the world's current second beat ODI batsman is not an ODE player just because of his current form in a particular series. Add to that the fact that he has been at the top of those rankings for ages.
The fact that he is not part of a wishy washy corruption riddled Indian T20 fiasco called the IPL means nothing and has no bearing on his ODI status.

Doffies
Forget about it - you are too bloody dim to understand the concept of "horses for courses". In New Zealand Amla's form is iffy - in the sub-continent it is not up to standard - whether you like it or not. In those two countries his acerage is in the low 20's ad rpo below 4. If we play games in SA he is a must - even though his initial run rate is low - he can catch up later in innings. In the sub-continent he never gets a chance to catch up - he is out too early.
I am indeed surprised you know about the IPL - but obviously you do not know that it is a huge cash cow for SA cricketers and everyone of them will swim their if they could get a chance. In the case of Amla his scoring rate is too low to be competitive in that competition so he does not get any offers - even cheap ones.
Corruption has nothing to do with it - dimmest clown in the universe. .

Mike your post is a pile of shit....yes Amla is not in form right now....does that even merit questioning his credentials as an ODI player.....no fucking way unless you have no idea about the game.
Number 2 in the world in ODI s with an average of 53 and Strike rate of 89 and you are stupid enough to question him?
Geez man get a grip

With respect - did you read what I wrote about horses for courses. His average per ODI match in NZ and the sub-continent is not good enough and whether he is in form or not does not matter in those two countries/areas.
He does make runs very slowly early in innings - irrewspective of where the games are played though and that put some pressure on other batsmen who try to keep up a decent run rate.

I did not read it all as it's rubbish....a strike rate of 89 tells me enough...who cares if he starts slow which he does not.
Amla to open in ODI s until he decides to retire.
One of the best bats in the game in any format - his credentials should NEVER be questioned end of story.

This is not the first time that Mike has tried to rubbish Amla and it is going to pot for him again. The sub-continent doesn't suit a whole host of players but that does not take away anything from any of them. That only happens in ou Maaikie's warped skull.
