Two members insisted that I do an analysis of De Jager and I accordingly looked at his stats and performances.  De Jager played in 3 tests thius year and came from the ebnch in one test and played for 40 minutes.    In other tests apperances he was on the field of play in two and played for kless than 10 minutes in each.

Again one has to look at the stats - and what actually happens onthe field of play:-

Wales  -  40 minutes

Ball Carries

Other than in the Scotland test De Jager's ball carries have been very limited in distance gained.   However, there is one issue very clear and that is when he gets the ball - it takes two or more players to bring him down and he normally goes forwa rd in the process - making ball recovery easy for the Springboks.   He is a strong ball carrier and there can be no dount about that one.   The fact that he did not cause any possession losses with ball in hand confoirms that.

There are always talk about him being a poor and slow player.  He played alongside Matfield in the Scotland tes t and looked better than Matfield in that test

Tackles made

De Jager in the four games under discussion made 40 tackles and missed 9 tackles for a missed tackle ratio of 18,37%.   The latter percentage is too high - but it should be note that 6 of his nine missed tackles happened in the second Argentine  test at Salta - when he did have a seriously below par defenseive record for that test.

The issue is also the quality of tackles.   Most tackles made by De Jager are strong tackles driving back tackled players back and is often followed by turnovers in possession in favour of the Springboks.

Line-outs

De Jager in the four games listed took 16 line--outs on own throw and 2 on opoosition throw.   There is no indication that he oes not take the line-outs called to him.   He has the ability to take line-outs on oppossition throw-ins as well

Penalties given away

De Jager gave away 2 penalties in the four games listed - which is below thw percenta ge givn away by the other SA locks in 2014.

Other Games he came off the Bench

De Jager was used on three occassions coming off the bench.  In the second Wales est - the one nearly lost by SA - he came off the bench for 3 minutes in place of Flippie - who had to leav e the field with a blood injury.

The second game he came off the bench was against the All Blacks he played for 10 minutes and was severely criticized for being forced over the touch line in the final minute of the game.   However, in comments by the coaching staff of the Springboks on Boots&All they indicated that passing of the ball to him at that stage was a mistake by Hougaard - he was too near the touchline with no space to do anything in and at least three All Blacks in front of him in defense.  Accirding to the coaching staff the ball should have gone inwards towards the other side of the field - De Jager was in a hopeless position to really make any substantial move in that case.   Please note that I am using here the comments of a coaching staff member on Boots& All in the relevant regard.

The other test where De Jager came on was for ten minutes   was in the Padua test on Saturday.   Here again - he took the one line-out called to him and took one verys trong tackle - driving the Italian player back in the tackle.

Performance Criticism

There was no way that De Jager was ever favoured to play in full tests - the only play he wassupposed to be was from the bench.   In thefirst test mentioned - he came off the ebnc h for 40 minutes and in those 40 minutes looked a better player than Botha was - who started the match and lso better than Matfield.

The Argentina tests start resulted from th factthat Matfield was not available for the tests due to a minor injury.

De Jager is severely criticized by some members on this site based on two grounds, namely -

*   the bad missed tackle count in Salta;

*   and the All Black game incident in Wellington.

In essense in the case of the second incident above - the matter was dealt with and explained by the Springbok coaching staff in public - so I would stay with their explanation..

The second case - the Salta missed tackles scenario - seems to be against what he showed in the other tests where he played for longer than 40 minutes.   That he did not make the tackles is clear - but the circusmatnces of the missed tackles is not so clear and can only be dealt with by a review of the game itslef.

There is no way that the critical comments of the members of this site can be justified if all games are taken into account - so the members should be careful not to be criticizing the player on flimsy grounds based on prejudice.

SUMMARY

OTHER THAN THE INEXPLICABLE MISSED TACKLE RATIO IN THE SALTA TEST DE JAGER DID VERY WELL IN THE GAMES WHERE HE HAD EXTENDED GAME TIMES.   THERE IS NO WAY THAT HE DOES NOT HAVE ADEQUATE SPEED AND LOTS OF GRUNT IN LOCK PLAY.

Two things stand out in a mediocre brew:
1) Missing  the Bargie scrum half for a try in Salta, that could and perhaps should have resulted in our first loss to the Bargies.
2) Lacking the smarts to realize he needed to immediately veer infield, thus squandering a golden opportunity to beat NZ in NZ and perhaps win the RC.
Unfortunately rugby still requires smarts and good instincts. Sadly Lomp gives no indication of having those attributes.

Balls - so that two incidents - one explained away by the coaching staff themselves - and the other a one--incident situation - where he missed tackle on a scrummie - is  th e absis for all the ciriticism of Loodvoet, and all the rubbish you have stated on this site.  The fact is that it is prejudice and nothing else that comes into the picture here.
Veering in-field - with no space and more than enough tackers on top of him is a nice theory - and is based on utter nonsence.   So suddenly the smarts is an issue here.   By the way did Matfiekld showed "the smarts" when he destroyed two backline moves on Saturday - when he was loitering in the backline?

There is nothing really poor in this player - if you read your criticism - varying from  rubbish comments on his pace to  his moustache - one could see the prejudice coming through.
He put up a better performance on tehwhole than Bakkies didand bakkie shimslef relaized that- so my advice to you is that your prejudice is getting the better of you and so your sensible discussion of rgby goes - as per normal _ out of the window.

He was pushed out by Barrett and nobody else as Pakie showed. As for that coaching staff bs ask yourself why he was dropped.

That was never the case - he never was in Meyer's book as the starting lock - he came on basically because of injuries to Matfield,  Flippie, Etzebeth, etc.
He was not dropped ever - was in the squad always since June - and came on instead of the floundering Botha - a faviurite of Meyer - who did squat when he was on the bench instead of De Jager.
Your idea of "dropped" has been around since youstart using the term in the Marcel Coetzee case.   The only really "dropped" player was Morne Steyn - who flopped so ballly that he was dropped from selection - even though he remained in the squad.  Steyn did not make any test 23 squad since the Aussie test - so he was "dropped".
The player to be dropped sooner rather than later is the gruntless, physically-deficient Matfield - who are doing less and less on the field of play and whose lotering in the backline is costing us dearly.

I was waiting for that "ana lysis" and was waiting to see if you would have the balls to take into account the one game where he was up against a weak team and "produce" great stats. Come on Maaikie, be a man and take out that game and look at the rest of his performances, especially those against tougher opposition where he faded away. How come you did not include his "stats" against Australia and NZ?

You are making a lot of his defence against a weakened Scotland but you are silent about his weak defence against Arg where he managed less tackles in the two games combined than the Scotland game.

You are p!ssing on about Matfield's ball carries but you are ignoring Loodvoet's crappy showing. Take out the one game against Scotland and see where that gets you.

You do not have the guts to admit that Loodvoet's "sats" are skewed by the Scotland game. You are always accusing everybody using starts selectively but you are one of the main culprits, if not the main culprit.

Try and take all of Lood's tests into account and see what happens. You will find that his totals are as follows:

Tackles
Tackles made:
All tests- 46
All tests, excluding the one against Scotland - 29

Tackles missed:
All tests- 9
All tests, excluding the one against Scotland - 8

Tackles missed %
:
All tests- 16.36%
All tests, excluding the one against Scotland - 21.6%

Ball Carries and metres gained:

(This is where your whole story is flawed):

Number of carries:
All tests- 24
All tests, excluding the one against Scotland - 16

Metres gained:

All tests- 60
All tests, excluding the one against Scotland - 4

Bottom line as far as ball carries are concerned is that it shows you just how ineffective he really is. He has had the following game time in tests, this year:
Wales - 40 minutes
Wales - 31 minutes
Scotland - 80 minutes
Argentina - 80 minutes
Argentina - 80 minutes
Australia - 8 minutes
NZ - 10 minutes
Italy - 20 minutes

That is a total of 349 minutes of test game time. In 349 minutes he 24 carries and gained 60 metres of ground at an average of 2.5m per carry. Now exclude the Scotland test and see what you get.  Let me help you out. In the remaining 269 minutes he had 16 carries, gaining a "staggering" 4 metres of ground at an average of 0.25 metres per carry.

Are you seeing what that one test against that one test against Scotland is doing to his overall figures?

Talk about using stats selectively. Lood was useless in all tests, bar the one against a very weak Scotland.

PS. I find it strange that you, once again, chose to open a new thread rathyer than sticking to the one where the argument was started. On second thought..... It is not that strange, actually. It is your normal MO to try and cover your arse.

Stats aren't going to provide the full answer without seeing it in context.

Many of our forwards will have similar stats on attack or defence as they play big bash bosh rugby.

They rarely run into gaps but rather take the opposition on head to head, to pull in defenders.

There is more value in seeing how they hit the contact zone, are they being driven back or going forward.

a forward can have 10 runs n a game and make only 10 meters, but each of those meters can matter if the momentum was maintained.

It is like saying a fullback ran 100 meters in a match, but 80 of them was from the back where there were no defenders.

As for missed tackles, you may miss 6 in a match but 1 was crucial, You often see a player missing a tackle he was never really going to make because a wing was running around him.

Against Italy Coenie missed a tackle because the Italian fullback stepped him, you are supposed to step a prop if you are a fullback, but the next tackle gets you as the defensive line is correctly set.

As per normal the zeroomoron goes on about the Scotland test being excluded.  I did not exclude that test - like I did not exclude it in the case of Matfield - who was compoaratively piss poor in that test.
Then the liar goes on and says -  "but you are silent about his weak defence against Arg where he managed less tackles"   My comments were - "but it should be note that 6 of his nine missed tackles happened in the second Argentine  test at Salta - when he did have a seriously below par defenseive record for that test."   If that is silent - heavens only knows what loud is BSrer.
"You do not have the guts to admit that Loodvoet's "sats" are skewed by the Scotland game. You are always accusing everybody using starts selectively but you are one of the main culprits, if not the main culprit."  When you do a statatistical evaluation - you cannot leave out some tests and include others so as to fit your theories doffies.

You are the one that carries on about Matfield.  Let me give you two differences between De Jager and Matfield:-
*   When De Jager tackles a player that player goes back in the tackle, in other words he makes strong tackles making it difficult for the tackled player's team to recover balls - when Matfoield tackles a player he goes forward in the tackle, in other words he makes average to weak tackles making it easy for the tackled players team to recover balls
*    When De Jager carries balls in traffic it takes normally two and even three players to tackle him and he goes forward in the tackle,  making it easy for his team to recover balls - when Matfiekld carries balls in traffic he is easily tackled and brought straight doiwn - making it difficult for his team to recover the tackle ball and even losing possession and giving away penalties.  - as confirmed in Matfield's stats.
Another idifference between the two is that De Jager shows grunt - Matfield, being pphysically weaker) shows NONE.
You idea of a useless poplayer is BS.   De jJger was better than Bakkies and Matfield  in the first Weklsh test and good in the first Argentina test - and that is proven by the stats as well.   He was defensively weak in the second Argentina test - that being the only bad one from a defensive perspective.   Bakkies Botha was weak in ALL tests he played in since November last year - his stats confirmed theat clerly.  Bakkies Botha realized it - the only locks he played with in tests or in training were Eztzebeth and De Jager and when he announced his retirement he said that he could not keep up with them - which was an honest assessment of the situation.
Look Doffies - you challenged me to do the assessment - to proof your piss-poor image you project on thiss ite - and when I did - and you were disgreaced wit egg all over your face so now you try to wiggle yourself out of it.  Must e hard to constantly be moronic - the personification of the true village idiot

OK, so you afford yourself the luxury of omitting certain stats but I am not allowed to do the same? What I was trying to indicate was that his stats are skewed by his performance in one test against mediocre opponents, but you know that. The truth about it just does not suit your agenda.

"*   When De Jager tackles a player that player goes back in the tackle, in other words he makes strong tackles making it difficult for the tackled player's team to recover balls - when Matfoield tackles a player he goes forward in the tackle, in other words he makes average to weak tackles making it easy for the tackled players team to recover balls

Your entire explanation is worthless simply because Loodvoet hardly ever carries the ball and when he does, he goes nowhere. He carried the ball 16 times in 269 minutes of rugby and he gained a total of 4 metres in the process. All your "..making it easy for his team to recover ball..." BS is just that..... your own BS opinion. I don't buy it. Lood has a long way to go to becoming a proper test quality lock, if he ever becomes one. He will continue to sometimes make an impact against weak to mediocre opponents and fade away the moment that the going gets tough.

If anything, you have been proven to be your old ducking and diving self, by dancing around the truth.

Foeitog - Dofdoos got it from me and now he start making wild assertions.  In 3and a half tests De Jager arried the ball 19 times - he is talking tripe again - "Loodvoet hardly ever carries the ball and when he does, he goes nowhere"   Take it Doffies - he gets tackled going FORWARDS IN THE TACKLE AND IT NORMALLY TAKES MORE THAN ONE TACKLER TO BRING HIM DOWN.
 Then for the following masterpiece:-
"I don't buy it. Lood has a long way to go to becoming a proper test quality lock, if he ever becomes one."

This from the prejudiced village idiot who praise Morne Steyn and a few other duds to high heaven is priceless.   He knows too little about rugby to buy anything.   What a lark.

You shoul know by now that the BS League of Morons -will always fabricate reasons to blame a player they do not like for problems during macthes and excuse those they like.   That is why nobody can take seriousy what they carry on about.
That try by the scrummie of the Pumas - he went through between the gap between De Jager and Bismarck - dead quiet about Bismarck - all the blame is to be De Jager.   It happens time and time again.   and is normal and to be expected from them.
They suffer from a serious illness - they are delusional and do not realize it.

Yet another effort to sugar-coat a poor defensive effort. I couldn't be bothered, otherwise I would have posted the whole incident with the pictures again. I have done it twice before and every time you disappeared from the argument in humiliation. It was Lood's lazy arsed attitude that caused the gap to open. Bismarck actually did very well to get into a position to try and stop the rot but there was only so much that he could do. Had he not drawn Lood's attention to the danger, Lood would not even have known that the Arg scrummie was on his way.

Lood will never be a world class lock. Live with it.

Lood does seem a bit mentally weak and I think we have better locks coming through the ranks but it was not his fault that he went into touch against the AB. Hougaard chose the wrong runner.
To say that he will never be a world class lock while he's only 21 is premature and a mistake.

Just because Lood hasn't been as impressive as predicted doesn't shine the light away from Matfields poor performances. Let's be realistic here, Matfield has been praised for his "perfect" lineout and restarts but he has shown nothing of the sort. He hasn't stolen one lineout/restart (To my knowledge) and doesn't get any go forward ball. What he has offered is a good workrate which is commendable for a man aged 38 but he has been in effective in ball carrying and tackling players back.

Lood will be in the Bok mix for years. cerundunce windpomp please oak you have no clue at all.
Here we have a 21 year old lock, 125kg and mobile. He had a superb Super Rugby campaign and played well in the tests thus far. He is going to be one heck of a lock along with other young locks like Etzebeth, Du Toit, Willemse and Jaque Du Plesis and possibly others.
Plenty of egg will flow re Lood and winpomp will be amajor recipient. Its disappointing that Dr Moz is struggling on thsi issue as well.
Meanwhile the matfiled tradgedy continues to play itself out. I cant wait for his retirement as it will mark the rebirth of Bok forward play which has been sold so short by martfields involvement. Unless Meyer calls in Juandre, not as pap as matfiled of course but fat too pap for a Bok lock. Perish the thought

 Beeeno
Mozart has a problem - he has favourites in the Springbok team and t hen condemn players on Super 15 level - without having seen them playing at all - purely because they may represent a threat to his favourites.
He did not see much of De Jager in Super 15 over the past two years -  but two of his top favourites - Bakkies Botha and Vicor Matfield could be under threat.  As a result he went for every potential younger lock - but the prime target was De Jager.  Now that Bakkies is out of contention - he should never have been in contention - the attack on other players must be more vigorous - since Matfiled could become even more under the microscope and consequently threatened with replacement.
What is interesting is that he use funny non-related issues to rugby in that process.  In the latest scenario he has one for De Jager's moustache - one would assume accrding to Mozart - it is having a serious detrimental aeffect on his perofrmances - or so I assume.
Ceradunce is just too stupid a moron to have a rugby discussion with - what a dofdoos!!!!!!!!

@Ou Dawie, make that three out of 12, poepol. Have you forgotten that you predicted a 50 point win over Ireland as well?

@Beeno. Pity your 21 year old 125kg lock was useless against real opposition. Our only hope, at this stage, for a proper replacement is if PSDT can recover and remain injury free. The only other possibility is if Park Bench Bekker returns and he remains injury free. Lood is not your man to replace Matfield.

@Ou Dawie. Here it is for the third time. Now don't go running away again, will you?

http://www.rugbyworld.com/news/blogs/play-like-pichot-argentinas-scrum-halves-analysed/

Rather than quietly acclimatise to the pace of the encounter, Cubelli added verve to the Argentina effort. Here, six phases into an abrasive movement, he manoeuvres his pack as Landajo did and sends a long pass into midfield from the left-hand touchline. Suddenly, the Pumas have a 15-metre blind-side and can attack on two fronts.

Perhaps fatigued, perhaps betraying inexperience in just his fourth Test, de Jager (dark green circle) expects the Pumas to come around the corner and over-chases towards the open-side of the ruck. For less than a second, South Africa do not have a guard in place on the blind-side.

As you can see from the screenshot, his shoulders are pointing in precisely the opposite direction to Cubelli’s opportunistic gaze – a stark contrast to the coiled body position at the ruck in the first three minutes when Landajo was on. Unfortunately, an exceptionally aware scrum-half punishes the concentration lapse.

Clearly, du Plessis has called de Jager across but must turn his hips in as Cubelli embarks on his rapid outside arc. Paused here, we see how dangerous the situation has become. de Jager is struggling to recover, du Plessis’s weight is on his heels and Cubelli has a decent-sized gap to aim for.

Both Springboks do manage to scramble back. Even so, they can only meet Cubelli with relatively weak arms rather than planting their feet and dropping a shoulder. Cubelli does show impressive strength to get through and stay upright (past Willie Le Roux), but the chance is created primarily by speed of thought – and South Africa’s consequent indecision.
