The good news for the Stormers on Thursday was that Duane Vermeulen was back in training for the DHL
Ex Supersport
Vermeulen has been out with a knee injury since April, and the Thursday morning training session was the first time he has been back onto the field since being injured in the victory against the Reds in Brisbane a few months ago. A press conference was still pending, at which Stormers coach Allister Coetzee was due to give full details, but Vermeulen took a full part in the training session and looked good.
The chances of him playing then look promising, with the No 8 having nine days to get back up to speed. Ironically last year he missed the semifinal against Crusaders after sustaining a knee injury just before that, so if Vermeulen does play this time, it will be a pleasing reversal for a man who must surely also come into the equation as a Springbok No 8 for The Rugby Championship if he proves his fitness.
The news on Schalk Burger doesn’t look as good. The appointed Stormers skipper briefly popped into the High Performance Centre wearing casual clothes but played the role of spectator only before taking his leave
Duane back will make a big difference - very good news this.
