NZME's rugby experts have made their predictions for the Rugby World Cup pool A crunch match between Australia and England.

Patrick McKendry


England are in disarray, Australia are looking increasingly dangerous. Their backs should cut the English to pieces at Twickenham and David Pocock and Michael Hooper should ensure their team win the breakdown battle. The robotic English forwards look a bit uncomfortable handling the ball; the Aussies much less so.

Wynne Gray


England will pinch this by a small margin. Familiarity with Twickers, massive crowd support, referee Romaine Poite, superior goal-kicking and the extra adrenaline they will use, knowing that a slipup will tarnish the nation's hosting work and leave them on the brink of their worst result in RWC history.

Because they have to. I'm picking desperation, a Northern Hemisphere referee and a few iffy scrum penalties to be the difference.

Pocock x Hooper + Fardy = Breakdown dominace; Breakdown dominance + Kuridrani x Folau = Wallabies win

England will be made to look inept at the breakdown as Hooper and Pocock replicate their efforts from Sydney. The Aussies lose a bit of shape late in the game with substitutions but are still out of reach for the hosts.


Jared Savage


Tempted to follow bookies and pick home team but England, as seen in loss to Wales, will buckle under pressure. Workhorse loosies will struggle with double trouble of Pocock and Hooper.

 Yup, you can expect conferences at every line out, injuries & soccer style recoveries, etc will it be enough, we will see.

England hasn't impressed at all ... not against Fiji and not against Wales.

Implying that England are cheats is rich coming from a Kiwi, don't you think??

Yes, Australia have breakdown superiority but you have to carry the ball over the gainline to truly take advantage of that. Copper is a problem. Added to that, their back three is vulnerable under the high ball. The Highlanders and Hurricanes exposed that in the playoffs this year and so too did the NH on tour last year. SA and NZ were too foolish to pressure those vulnerabilities. If England plays smart, forcing Australia to play in their territory and pressurize their back three, and dominate the collisions, they will win.

Folau has contributed to defeats by getting trapped deep in his half einstein. Bring trapped in your half with a back three that cannot alleviate pressure means turnovers and penalties! If you had the slightest capacity for even a basic level of comprehension you would have noted that this was how the Boks and New Zealand blanked Australia in 2013, how the Aussie teams lost in the playoffs and how the Aussies were exposed on tour last year up North.

Good player, not perfect. In the SA test he messed up two tries alone with poor handling. His tactical kicking is weak. Recall the Perth test last year? Setup five Bok lineouts on or inside Aussie 22m line because he could not clear his lines. There is a serious lack of reading skills on this board. You say someone is not perfect and get quoted as saying he is useless, you give a player 7/8 out of 10 and you have a campaign against them. You showed me ranks when I never ranked Folau. Merely I recounted numerous issues he had and exactly where you could find those issues. And still nobody is able to refute it, but that is typical.

What, Morne of Steyn fame? The most successful and highly decorated 10 in the history of South African rugby? Yes, I do. All whilst you back the dud of the biggest upset in World Cup history. Just leave it to Lambie you said, we cannot lose. Young Ono, a nobody, ran rings around him. So you can add ending our 2011 World Cup on top of his achievements too. 
Kirchner is a solid fullback. But I had already conceded he is not a playmaker ala Willie or Folau. But he did outplay Folau in all the tests they played each other. That's a dastardly blow to your little fantasy.
As per Folau being world class? Who is disputing that exactly? Couldn't your parents teach you how to read? He is a very good generator of attacking movement. However, he has not been his best this year and has a few weaknesses: his lack of pace has been exploited several times on both attack and defence. He cannot kick very well - something he has confessed he needs to work on. All this arguing started because I pointed out the obvious, a strategy to defeat Australia that has stood the test of time for four years - especially the past three. 
As for Cooper. LOL! This guy must be Australias own Morne. Not very well liked in Australia. Even ex players are calling him an idiot. Well, boofhead to be precise. Seen as skilled but sloppy and reckless. Cannot defend.
