ex Rugby365:

Jan de Koning rates the South African players!

15 Willie le Roux

His kicking game is letting him down in a big way.
5/10

14 Bryan Habana:
Committed and putting his body on the line, even winning some breakdown turnovers  and still knows how to find the tryline. Pity about the knock-on near the tryline.
9/10

13 Jesse Kriel:
His positional play and option-taking let him down in a big way.
3/10

12 Damian de Allende:
Strong and direct. Knows when to run into space and when to take it up.
8/10

11 Lwazi Mvovo:
Powerful with ball in hand even though the ball did not always go his way.
6/10

10 Handré Pollard:
He had some good moments with ball in hand, but his passing and decision-making needs plenty of work.
5/10

9 Fourie du Preez (captain):
His decision-making was not as accurate as we have come to expect.
5/10

8 Duane Vermeulen:
His hands let him down too often, but his physical presence was immense.
6/10

7 Schalk Burger:
Needs to learn not to wrap his arms around players' neck in the tackle and also got in the way of the backs at times. Still a high-energy performance.
6/10

6 Francois Louw:
He is meant to push the envelope, by the nature of his game, but at times he ripped it apart and cost his team. Some great carries and a heap of tackles.
7/10

5 Lodewyk de Jager:
The power he generates - be that with ball in hand, cleaning out at rucks or in the scrums - is a crucial part of the Boks' game and tactics. His workrate is just as impressive

8/10

4 Eben Etzebeth:
Perhaps a touch quieter than his second row partner, but still an invaluable contribution.
7/10

3 Frans Malherbe:
His scrum power set the tone early on and his work on defence was just as impressive.
7/10

2 Bismarck du Plessis:
His work at the breakdown was immense - earning his team a number of turnovers and penalties. However, still has the odd line-out throw that goes awry.
7/10

1 Tendai Mtawarira:
Reduced mostly to a defensive role, although his scrumming was impressive - even taken into consideration the quality of the opposition.
6/10

Replacements:

16 Schalk Brits (on for Du Plessis, 56 min):
Some good carries, nice stepping and made all his tackles.
6/10

17 Trevor Nyakane (on for Mtawarira, 56 min):
Scrummed strongly, but his workrate was disappointing.
5/10

18 Coenie Oosthuizen (on for Malherbe, 60 min):
He is clearly in need of more game-time.
5/10

19 Pieter-Steph du Toit (on for De Jager, 63 min):
Way off his best and needs to work hard to get to an acceptable level.
5/10

20 Willem Alberts (on for Burger, 48 min):
Plenty of string carries and made all his tackles.
6/10

21 Rudy Paige (on for Du Preez, 63 min):
Passed every ball he got and made two tackles. Just a link.
6/10

22 Morné Steyn (on for Pollard, 56 min):
Looked rusty, but stuck to the basics and made no major errors.
5/10

23 Jan Serfontein (on for De Allende, 60 min):
He was never tested and did what was required of him.
6/10

Yeah, Mvovo had no impact apart from his soccer try at the end. De Koning sounds like he was a bit bored with it all. Can't blame him.

My MOM was between Eben and Louw. Habana was given lots of opportunity, he created his own too, but the mstch was won by the grafters up front, with Eben and Louw doing the hard yards.

The allocations are very low in some cases.   I think there were two many handling errors and inaccurate passing,   That includes Du Preez as well.  He showed signs of being tired and hope the break of 9 days will help him.
In some way the game was too loose and that accounts for many of the errors.   On the other hand  the team played much better in the second half.   The problem may hav been that the players suffered from white line fever.
I do not think that ERtzebeth was better than De Jager - to my mind they were very much on par.  What as interesting tonight was the fact that Meyer took De Jager off early.  Maybe Meyer wanted to give Du Toit more game time.  However, I have a nagging suspicion that Meyer regards him an essential in future matches and he may have benched him to prevent potential injury.

Mike. Etzebeth was absolutely fantastic tonight. Telling tackles, good runs and exelent support in at least 2 tries. Lood made a few more errors too. If Meyer needed to protect anyone from injury, it would have been Eben and Thor. Most difficult to replace in the whole team.

Not much to be learned on the positive side, although Morne's passing was superb....but Kriel and Stephanie looked very impotent out there. Is Kriel really strong enough to play centre....he looks a better fullback candidate to me. The way the Eagles wing breezed past Stepfontein and Kriel was pretty embarrassing.
As for the scrums...we had the wood on them overall and the Beas t was dominant. But that little Eagles prop who was half Malherbe's size never yielded an inch. That's why the scrum kept wheeling.

Just casually watched the game. Morné drew and passed to Kriel setting him free out wide with Habana in space, but he couldn't get the ball away. He had Morné as inside support as well. Again, Morné with a flat pass to Kriel in USA 22, but kriel unable to get pass away. Morné with a long pass out that gets attacker on the outside of the edge defender with acres of space. There is more, but I will cover those in more detail later.
I did not see many ruck cleans by Lood, though his carries and defence were very impressive. I think he did edge Eben in this one.
Overall, my first impression is that Kriel was the w orst of the bunch. I hate to say it, but he looks to be going backwards each test. I don't think he is weak, he clearly handles himself far better than Damian, but he looks less and less like a centre the more I see him play. I initially had him pegged as the better of the two, but now? It could be another JJ in the making.

Kriel is feeling the heat and it's showing. Take another look, to me he is being dominated in the collisions by quite ordinary players.

I'll have a look at that, but overall he has been much stronger than Damian, especially on defence. If Kriel is starting to be exposed physically that does not bode well for the rest of the competition.

O - what a load of absolute BS again.  The scrumming of Malherbe was rubbish - the Us prop was firm on his side of the scrum.
And then we have the know-alls again.  Kriel is weak. etc.   Kriel made a serious mistake tonight - he had white line fever and did not pass the ball.  That is an aspect of his game that needs attention.    He handled the ball 7 times and never passed the ball - wanted to do too much himself - but to call him weak and being dominated is insane.
In essence I do have some problems with the game of Du Preez yesterday.  He looked tired and his decision-making and passing was a bit problematic - but not a word about that.
In essence the kicking from hand game of the half-backs was not accurate enough and the include the wonderful Steyn.  The latter was so smooth - so he must be the flyhalf in the quarters.   Morne came on when the Springboks were dominant and even then he passed balls and himself did very little - missing the one tackle that came his way.
If we want a repeat of Perth - sure play Morne.  He did play for half an hour in the game - and that was more than enough for the tournament as a whole, since his goal kicking was not up to standard - missing 40% of his kicks at goal.   but just ifnore that and ignore the miss tackle as well.
I am amazed at the amount of ignorance and prejudice that ruled supreme in the case of our two most prominent Village idiots on site.

Morné did more yesterday, literally, than Lambie has done in six years at 10!
Now onto Kriel, you are quite incorrect, he attempted to pass but malfunctioned in every instance. At least two try scoring opportunities at first glance. One a guaranteed try for Habana after Morné set Kriel away expertly after mere moments on the field.
And now you are back to attacking Du Preez? Aren't you a little embarrassed after claiming he was fat, slow, unfit, couldn't pass and wasn't test caliber? Quite frankly nobody comes close to him and we know that he will be ready for the knockout stages.

Man Moz you do speak a load of shit. The Bok scrum killed the useless Yanks....that included Malherbe actually even more so than Beast.....utter lies.

Kriel not strong enough for centre bwhaaahaaaaa......take it you did not have the commentary we did here in the UK......that's all they kept going on about - his strength and beautiful balanced running. Muscled to the hilt and weighing 97kg.....hmmmm, he is more than strong enough for a centre.

PSDT had a good game, what game were you watching.

Typical pathetic bias against the players you have issues with. Was 64-0 not good enough for you?

Willie needs to stop with his kicking crap......my guess is useless Meyer has instructed Willie to kick, because these was talk at one point that he wanted Kirchner in the side at 15 for his kicking game. Dumb Meyer probably thinks because we are playing in the NH, our 15 should be kicking more.

Dave if the scrum is wheeling clockwise, there is no way the tighthead is the dominant force. There was big overall pressure from the Bok scrum, which was 5 % heavier than the Eagles second team scrum.  But not once did the Eagles loosehead collapse or come up. In most scrums he went inwards as the whole scrum rotated.
In fact if you look at the scrums you will see Malherbe on his knees in at least two scrums as he lost balance from his stretched out scrumming position. Parity in the scrums and a good opponent and this guy is going to leak penalties.

This is the greatest lot of BS ever.  Most scrums went straight back - the all mighty has decided to see things differently because one of the scrums wheeled - o everuone wheeled in his book.  Everyone else is wrong - Mozart is looking and seeing things nobody else sees.  The leaker of penalties has been Jannie and that is a fact which he does not want see - everyone else is wrong - Mozart thinks he is 100% correct as he wants to see it.
That was the same last week - when he tried to soft soap Jannie's yellow card and did not see the tight-head the Boks took from the Scots after Jannie's departure.  Lucky enough there are sane people around - so thinking people see clearly through this BS.

So how did the Springboks took a tighthead after Jannie was gone? Absolute BS as per normal because dear Jannie can bugger up constantly and you two know-alls about nothing is happy so others must be happy as well.
Jannie and Matfield in that quarterfinal and the Springboks can book their flight home the day after the game.   .

You dim Kak - I mentioned that Du Preez had virtually no rugby for 14 months and it worries me whether he will be matchfit.   You now cme up with the above BS  after I made the following comment on the match yesterday:-
"I think there were two many handling errors and inaccurate passing,   That includes Du Preez as well.  He showed signs of being tired and hope the break of 9 days will help him."
Du Preez did make some mistakes yesterday - if you did not see those - then your head must be where it normally is - up your own a r s e h o l e.

Very poor ratings. Nyakane was very good when he came on, very active and even had a steal or two at ruck time. At least a 7. As for our scrum, with the exception of one scrum, we pushed the Americans back convincingly every time. I was amazed that they even managed to get their own ball out of the scrums with the way they were being driven back. Francois Louw had his best game so far this world cup, and to give Kriel a 3 is just silly. He was not great, but still a 5-6. Serfontein looked very off the pace! That tackle he missed was evidence of it.

One comment Michael. You did, over several years, s ay du Preez was garbage and tried to prove that he was poor and "costing the Boks" in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2013 and 2014. Then you said he will be fat, unfit, slow and devoid of skills. So yes, back to picking out Du Preez.

Most of the scrums went backwards at a rate of knots......wheeling had little to do with it, Implying that Malherbe was not dominating his opposite number is insulting.

It was no contest.........Malherbe completely owned the Yank loosehead, just like Beast did the tighthead.

Frans Malherbe

His scrum power set the tone early on and his work on defence was just as impressive.

du Preez was solid against Scotland but pretty bloody average against the Yanks

Its all about the genius he brings to the game......not much in actual player substance.

I nice pass, nice option taking most of the time and a nice kick and that's pretty much it.......no prospect of adding some attacking clout, something your test 9 should offer.

du Preez will do a job and is the best of an average bunch in the squad. All the best 9's are playing CC rugby

I think that Kriel has more than enough strength for a 13, he can improve his decision but so can any young rugby player playing in one of the hardest positions.

Like Saffex, I had the uk commentary team who kept commenting on how strong Kriel was. I think they said, that he had the highest muscle to weight % in the squad, or the lowest body fat %, and I know stats don't tell the whole story but I don't think he's weak at all.
