For one of the first times I can remember we have weakened our lineout to strengthen our fetching game. The pack has plenty of bulk so counter rucking should not be an issue....and the four man fetch(Schalk, Brussouw, Louw and the Bismarck) could play a big role in denying NZ fast ball. HM knew he had to give Whiteley a shot, but after an anonymous World's game....he was free to pick this interesting loosie combination.

 

 

 

The area of concern has to be the lineout where a huge responsibility now falls on Etzebeth and Lomp. We know Eben is up to it.....but Lomp, the blood runs cold. Still with Flip Flop available with his vast experience, a half time substitution may right the lineout ship.

You are right about the line-out situation - but I freeze not about De Jager - rather about Matfield,  who does not call balls to come to him anymore because he is afraid to compete in line-outs against reasonable locks.  It is a great relief that the work-shirker is not in the team - otherwise there would have been chaos in line-outs on Saturday.

 We are going up against a traditionally very lineout, so I don't think it's much of a gamble. But Flip should be a starter, he is proven against New Zealand. He always causes them problems and his power tips the scales in our favour in general play. No nation can match that kind of power. But without breakdown dominance, New Zealand' s game essentially falls apart and they've always been quite susceptible from turnovers, more so than most.

 Victor is the hardest working lock in the country, and will be sorely missed. Furthermore, Victor has never been one to call exclusively to himself, rather, he looks to play mind games and select the best option. It's this that sets him apart from other locks, as Graham Henry correctly stated.

 I don't know what he said in 2009 but I do recall what he said in 2011. Sentiments which are shared by every top coach in world rugby regarding things which stand to present day. Were they not so, then what of the pretenders who have been outplayed by Victor? They've all come and gone, and yet, after 10+ seasons, only Dan Vickerman has ever stood toe-to-toe with Vic. What a legend!

You and Mozart had brain seizures and got stuck in 2009 - slightly beyond 2007.  Matfield was good in line-outs then - the lightest lock that could easily be lifted in line-outs.  He is still light for a lock  but he is too afraid to call line-outs to come to him because he would too often fail like he did in a number of tests - especially the two against the AB'd in 2014.   Not standing up to Matfield in 2014 - tell Whitelock that in the 2014 Ellis Park test and he would laugh his ass off.

The main function of a lock is to perform as a Tight 5 player - where Matfield produces ZERO in performance.   He loafs around in the backline where he is making weak process tackles.   The hardest working lock in SA - BLAAS MY SIEL.

This notion that Matfield is better than any other lock out there come line outs is a load of utter rubbish.
It's been many a year since Matfield stood talk in the line outs. The likes of Lood and co are no better or worse than Matfield in the line outs.
