Frans Steyn in Meyer's World Cup plans
* when he was the worst attacking center or flyhalf in all teams in Super 15; * when he was the second worst defender with a missed tackle ratio of 26 of any SA no 12 in Super 15 last year; and * when he created a world record for ball possession losses in 2014 Super 15 - 32 of those.
Not this year - when eh was desperately poor in the matches he played and specialized in collecting cards in games - 1 yellow and 1 red in four games played, the red resulting in a ban for 4 years.
There was NOTHING good in performances over the past three years - so Dave's statement must be based on what he was before 2012. Reputation selections without performance is an abomination.

So let me dispel this ignorant rubbish. Frans didn't start 10 games at flyhalf....the Sharks lost 4 or nearly half of those games. Frans did start 8 games at flyhalf, the Sharks won 7 of those games.
Sharks winning % without Frans at 10....60%
Sharks winning % with Frans at 10.....87.5%
The disaster was when Jake caved to Natal bias and played Lambie at 10 against the Saders. The Sharks only chance was to play Frans, the player who guided them to victory over the same team with 13 players on the field at times.
Let me dispel most of your garbage. There is no way that you can prove that the Sharks won their games because Steyn was the flyhalf - you yourself admitted there is no scientific base for the statement and that it is basically just not on. The Sharks did win the majority of their games because of goal kicking and the penalties were not the result of any contribution by Steyn. Virtually all kicks at goal he converted - bar perhaps a few long distance penalties - any decent goal kicker would have converted - so one has to look at his all-round performance as well.
It is in the latter case where the wheels comes off completely. He was the worst defending flyhalf of any SA conference teams in Super 15, the worst giver away of ball possession, the worst attacking flyhalf as well. Steyn is not a good decision-maker and his actions are slow. His kicks - though long - were basically inaccurate (hence the record number of possession losses he recorded) and easily dealt with by the opposition teams. In fact that is why he neutralized the whole Sharks backline during the 2014 season and there can be no disputing o the fact that the backline was not performing satisfactorily.
Steyn is no flyhalf - he admitted himself that he does not want to play there unless forced to do so - and there are serious question marks about his performance at center as well. He was even more ineffective at center than he was at flyhalf.
The disaster really is when Steyn is in the backline of any team - the fact that the Sharks backline last year became totally ineffective was mostly the result of Steyn - whether eh played at center or at flyhalf.
Why is it that you shy away from an actual statistical evaluation of his performance and concentrate on a totally unscientific deduction on your part? I can give an answer - the fact that his actual performances on the field of play indicate a sub-par performance by the player - so some mythical reason should be found to justify support for him.
Reputation and myth does not make a player - actual performances do - and Steyn's performances last year factually and supported by his individual stats proved that he was not up to standard. Fact is the selection of Steyn in the Springbok squad for the WC would have a disastrous impact on the performances of the team.
Spot on 3ku1
No Blue, I said I would have Frans in my squad......but he would not start in my side......my centres would be 12. Serf 13. de Allende
Um Moz......the Sharks U21 side had numerous looseforward injuries and a surplus of centres.....they moved Esterhuizen to flank as a stop gap for all of 2 games.......does that make him a blindside flanker then?
Where has he played since those two stop gap games?
There are at present the following no 12 centers better than Francois Steyn:-
De Allende, Serfontein, Vorster, Odendaal, Francois Venter and Esterhuizen - who are far better players than Francois Steyn is. Why should he be in the Springbok squad ahead of the 6 players listed by me?
Step against Wales. Four runs, 5 metres...no breaks, no defenders beaten two turnovers. Now his def enders will say he never got enough ball but the fact is he doesn't get himself in position to get good ball.

As far as I can read this the thread is about Francois Steyn and his potential candidacy for selection for the Springboks. You quoted strings of stats about Serfontein, but have refrained from quoting the stats of Fransie - one wonders why?
I will do you a favour and quote Fransie's stats to help you"=

Allow me to say that I am not overly impressed by the stats:
Ball carries : 21 Meters gained : 76 : Average gain : 3,6Line Breaks : NoneDefenders Beaten : 2Possession losses : 6Penalties : 6Tackles made : 20 : Tackles missed : 8 : Ratio = 28,8Yellow Card : 1Red Card : 1
Fair question - are the above stats what you expect from a test player?
Try again - the poor stats are similar to last year and the year before and the tests of 2012.
You do not need to find vague justifications for a player whose performance on the field of play is constantly poor - a fact confirmed by stats. The further problem is that if you use stats - you use them for all players - not selectively.
