I apologize about my forecast of a Springbok defeat and admit openly I was wrong.  The players who made a massive difference to the team was -
*   Willie le Roux*   Damian de Allende*   Fourie du Preez*   Duane Vermeulen
The only problem was that our scrumming was problematic - and especially on the part of Jannie du Plessis.   His scrumming was really problematic and the scrumming situation only improved when he was replaced by Malherbe.
There is also a serious indication how much better our Tight 5 improved when Matfield and Jannie was replaced.
There is one worry in the team from an injury perspective one serious worry and that is a potential injury to De Allende - he was massive in the center position and one can only hope the injury is not serious.   His massive upper body strength was clearly in evidence and he gave the Springbok forward ball continuously.

Be fair Mike, Matfield had a good game. All the players you mentioned were also good.

Agree Mike, Lood again showed how superior he is to matfiled. Panel hereaare saying how good Lood was. Also that Malherbe made a big difference. The Samoans simply do not have a lineout. Ou matfield knows this so suddenyly called the balls to himself. Man he is such a miserable con artist. However we never missed a beat when wee victor went off.

Can we afford a tight 4 against England for example?

The Samoan team tired badly because they don't have the depth tier 1 nations have so they bench is a problem. This should be taken into account when comparing Boks starters & bench players.
I agree Samoa had no line out though, that was painful to watch.
What happened to all the hand-wringing about imagined Samoan dirty play. It was a good clean game as far as I could tell. Both sides were clean.

Too late JW I have already noted how the samaons strangely didnt resort to dirty play for once. I suspect they were warned but it could have been they now know not to mess with the Boks.

Matfied an Burger need to be added as they were  good tonight . Let's hope that Pat only ever plays off the bench. Du Preez is the key to any hope we have in this comp.

Just Win, if this was a clean game (I read on a live update of a Samoan high tackle) then it will have been the first time that has happened in all the years I have been watching this fixture.
As per Damian, I look forward to reviewing the game. If he really stood up to it all then we can settle on this combo for the rest of the tournament and have some consistency. But I am skeptical of those strong carries however, given how inaccurate most have been up to this point on failing to interpret the game. But as I say we'll see.

Lood was far better so why matfiled? No reason whatsoever. He is a major risk when playing a powerful pack.

Sorry - but you have written enough BS on De Allende - any player beating 7 tackles in a test is a strong ball carrier.  It normally took two or three tacklers to bring him down and even then he went forward in the tackles and provided safe balls to the Springboks at the point of breakdown.

Finally after four years of poor play by the Springboks we are rewarded with a great display of rugby.
CM I second you with an apology but you forgot to mention the player that made the biggest difference to the Springbok play.
POLLARD.
Pleased to see Habana get his 50th Springbok try. He needs another 4 to tie the record.
Trust he is rewarded with the record, with Scotland and the USA to play and into the quarters and who knows if they go through he has a great opportunity of breaking the record.
Pleased to have lost my bet.

To be fair to Matfield he was not as bad as he was last week,   He did very well in line-outs and he was less obvious standing around in the backline, but he was poor in other aspects of the game - for instance in giving away two penalties to Samoa.   When he and Jannie was benched the scrumming and Tight 5 plays improved drastically and that is a good sign for the future,

Michael, every word I have ever said about Damian up until this point has been an irrefutable fact. I would go so far as to say that there has never been a more detailed an accurate assessment of a centre anywhere in this forum, if you can find one then be my guest and show it to me. If Damian has turned a corner then I am willing to accept him as a Bok starter, but to deny what he did before today is dishonest to the point of the most repugnant of poor form. To be quite frank, you have made a bit of a wally of yourself defending his prior work. You had to ru n away from several threads and attack me personally in others to vent your frustration.

Card your assessment re Allende has been way out all along and today the EGG landed. Card you blundered own up and move on.
Malletwas extolling Allended reminding ius Allende had the most line breaks in teh Super 15. He is very strong on defence as he showed again today.

Yes windpomp Bryan is still a fine wing. He and and JP were on song today.

FDP has a galvanizing effect that gives the team stability and direction. He makes the other players play better. His option taking is spot on especially when under pressure.
The bok backline was enterprising today. It was good to see the belief the players have in each other.
Willie Leroux had an average day by his standards- but still played very well.
With FDP and Leroux there is 2 brains in the backline - at least ones that think well under pressure.

Damian made those linebreaks where exactly? Can you tell me what patterns the Stormers were using? What moves they were running? Player assignments within those systems? Or defensive systems and assignments? Well I went through those throughout Super rugby and again for the Boks, who ran many of the same ploys as the Stormers to get Damian in space. I won't be surprised if they turned up again today. And you quote Meyer, but would you be so quick to quote him on the Stormers ineffective, lateral attack? If Damian was really ploughing into defenders and creating space where was the team struggling to get the attack straightened? It was at 12. My assessment of him was spot on, and to this day stands as irrefutable. If you think you can prove orherwise I can revisit any game you care to mention anytime.

The service of De Preez and the performance of Pollard were two factors that influenced the backline performance today - the third factor of even more importance was De Allende - when hr got the ball he always took the ball forward over the gain line and neutralized two or even three defenders in the process.   Getting front foot ball benefit for the rest of the bsckline players, as well as the rest fo the team.
Mozart and DF hate De Allende's guts because according to them Francois Steyn should be in the team and they would never talk the truth about him.   I am sure the two of them are working hard to find something they can attack him on in the game today.

Anyone still arguing the toss about Allende isa nutter. Ditto anybody think Lood shouldnt start - an even worse hatter. There was no contest in the lineouts. matfield laid zero foundation. He is not a tight forward so cant do his job. End of story

Bok ratings: Oldies strike back

Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer

Victor Matfield: 7.5

Some critics felt he should be demoted for this one: instead he got up for it superbly. Constant bastion of reliability in first half, either at kick-off collections or the lineout, where he caused mayhem on Samoan throw. Rousing applause as he left field on 55 minutes, sound job done. Had ice pack on left leg afterwards – hopefully just a 38-year-old’s lot?

OuMaaik, if you can't include Matfield in your apology then its worthless .

Man up boet .

Make up your mind. You said: "Pleased to see Habana get his 50th Springbok try. He needs another 4 to tie the record."
If you really meant RWC tries, then you are wrong again because he has now scored 11 RWC tries. He need 3 to take over Doug Howlett's second spot, 4 to tie with Lomu and five to take over the no 1 spot.

Beeno, this is the mentality I hate:
Player x has several bad tests, then a good test. The fanboy will have said he played well in every test, and will point to the good test as proof he was right all along. This person is of course an fool who got lucky, ONCE.
Now, I'm assuming Damian played well, but to suggest that irradicates the past is the purest form of idiocy. That is the distinction I have been making. The showings prior to the Samoa test where covered extensively, and if you felt he was so good, you should have taken up the opportunity to defend him when I posted those threads with vids and full write up. We can still go back to the Aussie test if you like, then to the rest of the tests. But the Aussie test was a good place to start because all of you Damian fanboys ran away!

FANTASTIC GAME FROM THE MIGHTY BOKS.Apologies from me as I said I would. Jean, Victoria and Louw had their best games ever.Victoria was excellent in what we no he can product. Line-out supremacy and good work around the field, he is however the week link come scrum time and the tight loose. Massive improvement in typical tight 5 play when Lood came on.I have got the balls to apologise where necessary, NOW where are the apologies from those re DAMIAN.
Everyone that look the field I as a supporter are massively proud of the way they bounced back. For me the only weak link was Jannie.

With the odds offered I had to lay a bet on a chance that Samoa would win.
I gladly surrendered that gamble in light of the good performance put up by the Boks.

Ceradyne....That was my typing error 50....should have been 60 springbok tries.
On the second point I left out WC after the 4 tries....and the 4 tries will tie the existing record as I stated.
5 tries will break the record, correct.
Lets hope that he gets the opportunity to score those tries as he has been a great wing for SA and for rugby as a whole.
He is deserving of that record.
Thanks for the correction.
