Not very assuring before the 4 nat-

Stormers captain Jean de Villiers was searching for answers after his team stumbled in the Super Rugby semi-finals for the second consecutive year.

The Stormers slumped to their first home defeat of the season when it counted most in front of a sell-out Newlands crowd and the Springbok centre cut a bleak figure as he struggled to hide the bitter disappointment of coming so close yet again.

"It is going to take a while to get over this one," said a clearly emotional De Villiers.

"I have to be honest with you. I'm starting to doubt myself and doubt my captaincy," added the Springbok skipper.

"When you've been in this situation so many times you starting looking deep for what the real issue is.

"I ask myself could we have prepared better? No. Did we have the right attitude on the field? Yes.

"The commitment was there. It probably came down to not using those opportunities that we did create.

"It's an hour after the game and I'm looking for answers. I hope by Monday I feel better.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who is the long term captain for the boks?-

None of the Superxv captains seem assured of a spot in the starting xv on merit, well Spies is a Bull so he will probably make the starting xv.

Schalk Budger would be the best option- but seems to get injured more often than not, and takes ages to recover

Perhaps Bismark should be captain- but how much experience does he have?

Jean is no longer good enough to make the Bok 22. We need to select our best 15 and the captain should come from that. The only real options are Bismark and Bekker

Would Keegan Daniel be worth the effort. His leadership and commitment can not be questioned. Yes he is up against players with better skill but if JDV is expressing doubt then that doesn't bode well when we are about to face the AB's and Wallabies....hhhhmmmmmmmmmm

Schalk sadly will not be around for the next RWC his style of play is against him not getting hutrt again. Most players who come back from major injuries always show favour to their previously injured area so it will be interesting in how he mans up. But Schalk would be my choice. The same could be said about Juan Smith, asfor Bismark he needs to focus on his game I would hate to see him burdened with captaincy

Daniel is a great player, but would not make the Bok starting 15.

Schalk is history - there are better young loosies about now - he to would not make the Bok starting 1

Saff,

As much as I want to disagree with you I cant but feel as though logic and the current squad of lossies are just a step ahead. Nonetheless, we havent solved the question asked? Who can we call on to lead our boys? If we go into the RC with a deflated JDV and even worse a captain with confidence loss then thats a recipe for disaster if yyou ask me. We are going to miss Smit, Matfield, Fourie and co more than we think

Rad, it has to be one of Bismark or Bekker as both should make the starting 15. The only other certainties to start for the Boks are JP, Frans, Hougaard, Beast, Jannie, Etzebeth and Coetzee and none of these guys are leaders.

I would definitly pick between Morne Steyn or Pierre Spies.

Both are certainties and would suit Heyneke Meyer... Both are Bulls and both provide Meyer with ample oral satisfaction!

Luke Watson has thrown his hat into the ring. Apparently Cheeky Watson has been in contact with Hieneken Meyer and SARFU.

JDV is the man to captain the Boks right now. A moment of reflection is no reason to doubt his abilities - it will make him even better. He has tremendous respect from his fellow players with the Stormers and Boks Would much rather hear this from him than the usual politically correct captains speech. Shows he cares and he has shown the ability to elevate his game. He played quite well against the Sharks, missed some tackles, but made most and looked dangerous on attack.

Ruigby Championship is not the time to blood the young guys - rather do it on the EOY tours when the regulars need some rest and there will be opportunities from inevitable injuries.

Schalk should not be in the conversation for captaincy until he has demonstrated he has recovered - those knee injuries seldom recover to pre-injury form. Morne Steyn is not an option - his  spot in the Boks is in jeopardy - has to be or HM is not the coach I think he is. Bissie is still too young and a hot head, don't think he will ever be captaincy material. It would limit his game. Keegan is not up to par with the international level , let alone the other loose forwards the Boks have.

Desppite the post-loss blues - meyer will not change the captaincy before the end of 2012.    If he does - the choice is most likely to be Bekker.    The other choice with the next WC in mind could potentially be Bismarck.

Daniel is not in contention and the Luke Watson suggestion was likely to be a joke in bad taste.    Burger is unlikely to play international or even Super 15 rugby in future - so he is also out of contention.

Mike we were told as some point that Schalk might make the playoffs. Have you some inside info because from what is going around it appears he will be back.

As for Jean he showed again how good he is. One of the few Stormers backs who shone. His place as captain is safe as Meyer will not drop him.  Of course he is getting on but I think he will be in the mix till at least next year (it has not been Meyers plan to keep him  on to the next world cup. Jean will not make it that far). Witness his burst of real pace in shutting down Mvovo. Greatly respected and still a fine player.

daniel will not come near the Bok side as he is a scrummie playing loosefoward.  Bissie is not young I believe he is about 28. Smit stole some of his best years.

No we will ahve t owait and see what happens re Schalk Burger - 2011 SA Player of the year must to the confused  snapster's amazement.  If Schalk does come back to top form here is your captain.

JDV is still down from the loss to the sharks but to doubt his own captaincy ablity i think that is a bit premature for now. for the interim is the the choice but from the end of the year tour onwards we need a permanent captain to take us to RWC 2015. he needs to be chosen and i really think bismarck might be the best option.

but there needs to be a big transition of players in this year. no room for favourites needless to say. daniel is decent but he is up with some of the best loosies in the world and one can just pick a player for his captaincy unless he is well and truly something amazing.

good lord... if Watson ever got a jersey a again I would burn all my Springbok supporters gear on a pyre and start supporting the AB's.

He didn't lose that game on his own, in fact he made the right calls with all the penalties when they matter and tried his best to marshal the troops.

Unfortunately, the defence only game plan was never going to work if the Sharks got ahead. We have all been saying this for ages now. As soon as the Sharks were ahead the game was over, the Stormers were never going to come back.
