Nobody wants to be a nutter always moaning about the officiating....but how can you not after the Canes game. The "knock on" by Smith was a knock down. The pass for the Canes try was clearly not "backwards " out of the hand. The Stormers non try by Jones was a try....he was behind the ball. Right after the final kick off the Canes sub tackled Leyts round the neck right in front of the ref.

I'm not sure he was trying to cheat....but what's the diff. Jus t another game in which a Saffa team was screwed.

The worst call of the day was the penalty awarded against the Stormers for changing channels....what a load of crap. That was a perfect maul from the line out that would have been a certain try.
The ref was an insult. The Stormers were robbed.

I generally find the NZ commentators pretty sharp...they called every one of those, including the"channel change". You can't win in this league if you have so many calls incorrectly called against you.

Yes its strange how the kiwi commentators are generally fair and pick up all the bias. Everyone can see the nonsnese going on but a few diehard kbbs.
If this was just one match where things went wrong and we got the short end it would not be a tra in smash but its the norm actually and totally unaccptabe.
Try getting kbbs to admit there is something seriously wrong with their refs though!!

Yeah the commentators had it spot on.
I recall that high tackle you mention and thought the same at the time.

Thing about the clothesline tackle....it was right in front of the ref.

How in the world could Conrads knock on not have been seen?
This cannot even be gross incompetence.
Stormers were robbed blind end of story.
However the kbbs will boast of their winning record. Its a complete ref generated myth.

I mentioned four cases of reffing decisions that was clearly wrong in the game and those included only  two of the mentioned cases above.  The channel change Save referred to and the clothesline tackle on Leyds make the number of wrong decisions 6 in one match.  Of those 6 two resulted in tries for the Hurricanes - so what do we have here?  A case where the referee won the match for the home team.
Wonder what Kaplan is going to say about this match.
By the way as far as I can remember this ref was the same one who fouled up the scrumming laws in  the Crusader- Cheetahs game.   There must have been some repercussions because in the game of the Crusaders last week - the chief offender (Crockett) came from the bench and was immediately penalized for illegal scrumming.
He also fouled up the scrumming laws yesterday - so we either have an incompetent ref here or we have a crooked referee.  I believe there are elements of both of those here.
The problem was not only the ref himself - the line judges fouled up even worse - and the TV monitor was wicked as well.   So here we have a case where the whole reffing system went wrong and the Stormers did get screwed.
Incidentally when I wrote about the reffing issue and mentioned the four things I saw going wrong - not one NZ supporter could find me wrong in the four examples I mentioned as was highlighted by the commentators.   Wonder what is going to happen to the referee in this case.
Incidentally after a try was scored following the Conrad Smith knock-on/knock down in the red zone (an immediate yellow card offence) I thought I heard Vermeulen talking to the ref about the incident and the ref apologizing for the mistake he made.  Can anyone confirm that, please.

I will watch the game again & check out these calls. If it is so bad the review process should point it out.
I wouldn't generalize to include all games like one particular chap on this site does.

I don't generally moan about the refs but this game is the exception. The ref was piss poor.

Who was the referee? It seemed the Hurricanes were allways destined to win.
Stormers forwards done more than enough to win the match. Kolbe should have been playing left wing as Llyds waisted allot of good ball. The backs did not do enough to win the game.

Imagine Habana with all that ball that Lleyds got. I miss that guy.
Stormers are finding their groove and gelling as a team. Super tough matchup against the Tahs next week, but win or lose it feels like they are poised to make a playoff run.

I think the Stormers has a problem with Leyds - a problem Coetzee refuses to correct.  Leyds went to the Western Force last year and was found wanting by them.  His year contract was not extended and he returned to Cape Town.
Leyds came to the fore as the Under 20 WC squad full back in 2012.   He had a very average WC performance - but really went nowhere  in 2013 and in last year.   The fact is that Coetzee flatly refused to replace him is a clear indication that there are other factors than competency in evidence here.   He together with De Jongh and Kolbe are the so-called midgets in the Stormers backline.   Of the three only Kolbe has attacking nous - but all three are seriously questionable in defense.
For some reason or another De Jongh did not play yesterday -  Huw Jones played at 13 and it showed immediately.   Together with De Allende they had the Hurricanes AB center pairing of Nonu and Conrad Smith looking decidedly average.   If Johnny Korze was on the wing - the Stormers backline would have been much better.
I think the Stormers actually needs a better flyhalf - both Catrakillis and Coleman are really not up to standard.
That being said - I am of the opinion that the reffing was so poor yesterday - no team could have beaten the Hurricanes - ably assisted by the referee.
