From SARugbymag:
'– Frans Steyn made a perfect return from his suspension for Montpellier, who shocked the more fancied Clermont 28-19. The flyhalf started alongside Bismarck du Plessis, Paul Willemse, Jacques du Plessis and Pierre Spies, while countrymen Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg and Willie du Plessis sat on the bench. Steyn added eight points via a conversion, a penalty and a drop goal and Bismarck scored a first-half try. Former Bulls and Bok lock Flip van der Merwe played for Clermont, who are only three points ahead of third-placed Montpellier in the standings'

I have always regarded Frans Steyn as an exceptional rugby player.Sure he has had some bad spells and put on weight but who has not over the years.
Most bloggers on this site never give him credit for the simple reason that he never represented the Stormers, Lions or Bulls who they support.
A SHARK MAN and still turning heads.
Pleased to hear that once more he has delivered.
Eat your heart out CM. I would have thought that u would have appreciated his style of play but perhaps u could not see clearly from the sponsor's box u were sitting in or perhaps had one too many CASTLES.

So the dud may have had a reasonable game and you go ballistic. Fat Fransie has been generally poor for years and he may try and get a job in SA after White's departure from Montpellier and his favourite will also be forced to depart. The Kings may consider him = all the other franchises have better flyhalfs and centers than him.
There is no player stats on this match - so we cannot see how any aimless kicks he made and how many tackles made and missed, as well as whether he beat any defenders in ball carries - all of which in respect of which he flopped seriously in the past.
The quoted newspaper article mentioned goal kicks and nothing else - so to run with that to this forum to promote Fat Fransie is a joke in bad taste .

Nope the bad taste is yours....and the pathetic ignorance. There are stats on the match:
.
F SteynFH 0 1 1 1 1 8 ( one try assist, a drop, conversion and a penalty)
.
F SteynFH 9 12 7 22 0 2 1 0 (2 defenders beaten and offload)
.
F SteynFH 1 9 2 0 ( one turnover, he missed 2 tackles....but made 9, second after Bismarck)
.
No need to thank me.

Moz, Fransie was a great competitor and a match winner for the Boks. And he should have been capped more...but he never inspired as Bok 10. He was a very handy 12, but he's best Bok matches was at 15. I've posted his Bok career stats a few years ago and from that it was clear as daylight, but I can't be bothered to dig that from the archives again.

Steyn was at his best as a fullback when he had pace. He was a decent inside centre- with a coach that understands backline play- otherwise, he hogs the ball. His offloads in the tackle were underused.
He is an effective crash ball when no space required that tactic- and always makes it over the advantage line- while protecting the ball in the tackle to allow the ball to be cleared quickly while pulling in 2 backline tacklers.
Esterhuizen is an inferior clone of Frans Steyn- except he never had skill or much pace.

Have to repectfully disagree. I think Frans would still inspire more respect from our opponents than our current crop at 10.....Pollard excepted. And I absolutely think they gave up on him at 10 far too quickly based on a few charge downs. He has the physique for a perfect modern flyhalf and the boot of Thor.

Fat Fransie has not played in a single test since 2012 after his return from France. He was Fat and slow and played in the then Tri-nations without any positive effect.
In 2013 he played at inside center for the Sharks. In the first game he was a disastrous ball hogger at center and only passed the ball once to a player outside of him. For the rest he crashballed and made no impression in the process. He was poor in the second game against the Kings - very poor in a game the Sharks managed to win by 9-0 - three penalty kicks.
Before of the start of the 2012 season Fat Fransie joined the Sharks training scheme, He was grossly overweight and lost all speed he had previously. He was instructed to get down to circa 106 kg - the ideal weight for a sportsman of his height. He never even tried.
The next game was against the brumbies and Fat Fransie was a disaster. He missed 3 tackles after which the Brumbies scored three tries. The only time the Sharks really attacked in the Brumbies 22 he made the brilliant decision to kick the ball straight into the hands of the Brumbies fullback. By now Plumtree had enough of the bumbling Fat Fransie and he made the remark that he is no center.
Framsie was dropped at center and occasionally put om the bench and brought in at full back. When Jordaan got injured on the Shark away tour Fransie brought back at center but in the second game against the Highlanders he got injured and was out of rugby for the remainder of the year.
Then came 2014 with Plumtree gone and White in charge. White's blue-eyed boy was in his element as the coaches favourite and caused major problems in the change room. However, his stats was a disaster. He lost ball possession 32 times in the Super Rugby series - made 1 line break throughout the series and beat 8 defenders. He missed more tackles than De Allende whom Mozart attacked endlessly based on tackle stats - Fat Fransie had a missed tackle ratio of 26,2 against 26 of De Allende.
In 2015 he was even worse - he got banned for 5 weeks after a dangerous tackle and when he returned he was as poor as he was in 2014. He was slightly better - he made 1 line break in all matches - and beat 9 defenders.
When Fat Fransie came back from France he signed a contract with SARU for three years until 2015 - but in view of his disastrous performance SARU refused to renew it in 2015 and the Sharks would not have him.
Mozart may be happy on cloud 9 about Fat Fransie and his opponents on the field of play would be happier to see Fat Fransie in any position. Fransie is a slow decision-maker and consequently useless as a flyhalf, Besides that his kicking game is grossly inadequate - most of his ball losses cane from kicking balls directly into touch. Slow with a whacky knee which prevented him from tackling players running on either side of him.
Fat Fransie as a younger player was a great prospect. He had speed and was an outstanding full back. However, his stint at Racing Metro was a disaster and he came back to SA a fat and slow slob.
The above is what actual happened to Mozart's hero - Fat Fransie. Mozart came up with a classic. Fat Fransie's (wicked) stats do not reflect his real value as a player.

I don't care BSter - you have written a praise song on Fat Fransie and I have clearly indicated his performances since 2012 in some detail. Since you cannot dispute the truth you went bananas.
So lets get back to rugby - the Village Idiot admires some players on the norm the dimmer the better. Players without ball sense is his forte - the worse they are the stronger his support. Wonderful display of ruby ignorance on his part.
Where will Fat Fransie go at the end of the season after White effectively got fired as coach, Montpellier will not retain this hindrance to playing the game - so where will he turn to next for a job?
15 Mar 2017, 08:59#22
The operative word is "WAS".
Most are using words like "decent" ... "hog" ... "never inspired at 10" ... "handy at 12" ... which to mind is a far cry from the word "influential" as the title suggest.
Persoanally I'd use words like "brain fart, dirty, immature, embarrassment and prone to moments of madness" but hey that's just my views.
He had a few good matches in the 07 WC under John Smit but fell away to nothing special after the high of it all subsided.
Now he's desperate wannabe dreaming of the good old days in 2007.

He wants to get me to join the Village Idiot group leads by him on this site so that I could go down to his level of rugby ignorance, hence the idiocy of ascribing self-description to me. .

Pop goes the weasel...over inflated Steyn...was good years ago but buggered up...rugby is competitive and tough today...you have to pay your dues and do your time in the up's and down's of the local toughness...no shorts or quick fixes,
Frans has choosen a course that has many pluses but he is definitely not needed for the morale of up and coming of SA's future youth...there is a lot of talent there...otherwise the trend of rugby "prostitution" continues.
The question is: do you play rugby for the patriotism and pride of your country or do you do it as profession to earn the money...there are pluses and minuses for both but you cannot burn the candle at both ends...every choice has it's cost.

Seb
Since his return from France in 2012 Fat Fransie was so bad performance-wise no local franchise would contract him. So he cannot prove himself here and there is no reason to believe that he is not fat, slow and useless still.
Mozart thinks only iro Steyn when he was not physically deficient in 2007 - at present he is from a rugby perspective a useless flop. So we have a case of living in the past is accepted - but the present does not count.
