i find the bronze play off which is made from the losing teams of the semis playing each other to be a complete waste of time.

after battling long and hard to make the final, teams will be feeling more than a little dejected at failing the semi final hurdle, but now have to amp themselves up to play for third.

IMO once u reach knockout stages, its win or go home period.

theres only going to be one RWC champion, who gives a poo where u finish in the RWC if ur not lifting the webb ellis cup???

make the RWC special by not celebrating mediocrity, we see enough of that in rugby as it is.

what do u peeps think???

It does not make sense unless the outcome of the match can have an influence on the ranking of a team. My understanding is that the ranking determines who plays against who in the next world cup, but I could be wrong.

Those games have always felt a bit lackluster to me. You have two gutted teams who just missed out on the finals, essentially playing for nothing. Few people care about or remember who came third at a World Cup. I doubt the tournament will be poorer without that playoff.

Yeah, I agree Pakie. Probably the game every 4 years with the least motivation for the players. Totally forgettable. Only reason i recall the 99 participants is because it was played by the previous RWC finalists and most of the fans of the 2 teams, as well as a large portion of the rest of the rugga fraternity was looking forward to watching these two teams fighting it out for the prize. Was not to be though, didn't even wathed the match myself.

Fills in a gap in the schedule and gives some of the non playing squad members a chance to play at the WC...keep it.

Had some good games, SA v NZ and ARG v FRA. Plus you are still playing for status and ranking points. Not a total waste.

Argentina beating France for the second time in the same World Cup was kind of special.

As far as I know the third coming team has an automatic entry to the next WC and does not need to qualify for the said WC - irrespective of their rating when the pools for the next world cup is decided.   At least that is the theory attached to the play-off game - so it is not entirely unnecessary.

Losing a playoff is much worse than winning the playoff. So instead of playing to win- the prize is not losing.
