of that idiot Meyer leaving him out of the WC squad.....what a player this guy is. Hell in last years s15 he was in the top 5 for both steal and metres gained and he could not make the Bok squad
Twice the openside average Louw is or ever has been.

We have our openside flanker and we have our 8th man.
Now to select a blindside flank that'll make the Bok back row formidable.
Any suggestions??
To be honest ... none have really impressed me for national duty.
Lappies is mobile, has a high work rate, a good ball carier ... but sadly in my view still falls short of someone like Juan Smith or Andre Venter.
Jean Luc Du Preez?? Still early days. His brother Daniel?? The same.
Please ... no Schalk Burger. He's past his best by some way and should by rights go open a coffee shop somewhere on the coast.
Boom Prinsloo? Nah!! Not Bok material.
Hope the season brings out potential candidates ... I'm kinda stumped here .

The du Preez brothers, Hanro Liebenberg . . . maybe a retreaded lock like PSDT or Grant Hattingh . . . or - much more likely - a quota like Oupa Mohotje, Tera Mtembu or Skuna Notshe.

Those two Du Preez are as real a deal as it gets. I feel sorry for the other U21 teams at the WC this year. They're gonna make a mockery of defenses. But yeah Saffex, i totally agree. Though as I said before...Meyer will be sitting on his sofa watching Kriel restore pride to the Bok jersey. The thought brings Abigail smile to my dile. One gets the feeling that a guy like that ads an immeasurable amount of value to a team. Kriel marshaling the two Du Preez Bros, with Duane also on the field...that's a very scary prospect for opposition. Yeah, we have vokol talent in this country. How does one even begin to think that. What a joke.

Actually, looking at our potential loosies and locks. Granted it's early days for the Du Preezs, though it's obvious they are both future Boks. Flankers (Kriel, Du Preez) Locks(Eben, Lood, Du Preez) 8th(Duane) Bloody hell. Given a bit of time that would awesome. All athletic guys, good handling skills(Lood not so much) and all have game changing potential.

Notshe is a decent player Rooi, if he can carry on building and developing I think he could really make a name for himself

I stand by the intention of having Jaco Kriel 6, Jean Luc-du Preez 7, Dan du Preez 8 as bok loose trio. The du Preez twins have been very solid, these players will continue to show brilliance in more matches to come. The young talent coming through in South Africa is mind-blowing.

Du Preez twins did look awesome, but think they should be given a year or so before being thrown into the pressure cooker

"Notshe is a decent player Rooi . . ."

Yes, as are Mtembu and Mohoje. They're all decent but they're still short of international class.

You have to be a bit better than "decent" to play test rugby. There are undoubtedly better flankers in SA so they remain quota players for now . . . at least in the context of the national team.

I do agree Rooi, but the difference I see is that Mtembu and Mohoje are 25 whereas Notshe is only 22 so there's more scope to grow into a bok class player, hopefully he does

The options at 7 are Jacques du Plessis, Marcel Coetzee, Elstadt, Liebenberg, v/d Walt, Oupa and the du Preez twins
You need physicality at 7.......the likes of Labs, Notshe, Mtembu etc are not physical players......they are suited to 6 or 8
Its du Plessis or Coetzee for me right now, but by the end of the s18 it could well be one of the du Preez twins......they are physical freaks
Coetzee started as a 6, but these days at 112kg looks better suited to 7 or 8

We have plenty of loosie options - but it is better to stay clear of playing locks at 7 - they cannot perform the functions of a loosie and has been one of the detrimental developments that harmed out rugby for years now.

Coetzee is better suited to 7 or 8 because he is simply a terrible fetcher. Only matched for sheer ineptitude over the ball by CJ Stampkar.

Fetching by a 7 used to be not necessary when playing as blindsider and now it does not work out and fetching becomes a consideration - please aexplain what brought this about?

Sure the lines are a bit more blurred. But 6 is still your primary fetcher. Coetzee was never suited to that role. He simply can't anchor over the ball on the ground....Stampkar has the same problem. They are ball carriers, but not great ball carriers...There are dozens of similar flanks out there.

The real flop in 7's over the past three years was Alberts,  Every other player at 7 was better than he was.
Alberts did not know that a 7 must also do ball protection and recovery - you defend  Alberts all the time.   If ball recovery and protection is a factor at 7 I would go with Labuschagne who have both those abilities,   He is also a better ball carrier than Alberts ever was and his defense stats was regularly 4 times better than Alberts.'
However, I believe that the players in contention at 6 are Kriel and Coetzee and at 7 I would say Labuschagne and a string of other players - all were better than Alberts was.  They would never be on par with Burger at his prime, but they are also better than the present Burger who actually vanished from sight on Saturday and was seriously problematic in the WC .

Labuschagne is a provincial player, he would be dominated in the 4 nations. Coetzee is closer but probably a bench player. Kriel deserves a chance at 6, not hard to do because there is no one else. But I doubt he will carry his Currie Cup form onto the international stage.

I agree that a test selection should be someone special and that merely "decent" isn't good enough for the test arena.
However, there is always the possibility of turning the "decent" into something special, but that takes a little time and should not be allowed to develop at test level. We need the spot filled by a man who ticks all the boxes ... a man who can then take what he already has to the next level ... and perhaps beyond.
We need a powerhouse at 7 ... a mobile freight train. A hard man. Another Andre Venter and at this stage in time the closest to that is the DuPreez brothers and Liebenberg.
Jacques Du Plessis has had a number of seasons to impress and to be quite honest he's come across as pretty much average. He most certainly doesn't have the "wow" factor needed at test level.

Marcell Coetzee is best suited to the 7 role. He most definitely isn't a 6 nor an 8th man. I'm not the biggest fan of the lad but will concede that he is abrasive, has a high work rate, has plenty of pace and is rather physical ...
Still ... I'm excited about the Du Preez brothers and am hoping they mature rapidly into the special players they seem to be.
Like Plum said ... Kriel, Du Preez and Vermeulen is a scary thought indeed.
And to think that some say we have no tal ent in the country.

Well Kriel will face a sterner test this weekend when he confronts Sam Cane, one of the golden boys of NZ rugby & touted by some here as a future AB captain ........ Jantjies too, will have an opportunity to show that he has more to offer than a not-so-flash-hairstyle, when he confronts the underrated Cruden, my pick for the AB flyhalf spot this year .

@ Plum;

Definitely sporting genes in this family...but overall it's fairly common...the Du Preez clan has produced many although not all directly related...Frik Du Preez,Fourie Du Preez and others that slip my fading memory...but yes 3 probables in one family is a feat but Mrs Du Preez also must be included in the honours...in racehorse breeding it is often the filly/mare that gives the clout

Other French/Huguenot descendants in sporting families are the Du Plessis's,De Villiers,Joubert,Du Toit,Du Randt,Malan,Marais,Le Roux,Roux etc.

The is defintely a truth in this...but the ladies must take a lot of the credit...afterall imagine giving birth to these big boys
