I think it is a good thing - Maimane is a young professional - aged 34. He has a spotless record and is a very good debater.
I think based on calculation the DA got 1,2 million Black votes in 2014 and I think their would probably have been double that number if the ANC did not play the Hate Helen Zille race card in that election. If the DA want to show further progress they can only do so by gaining more Black votes and that is one thing Zille probably bore in mind when she made that decision.
Her other reason is also clear - Politicians should bear in mind the two term limits on political positions and hers will transpire in 2019. She will stay on as Premier of the Western Cape, but will have to leave that position in 2019 and I do think they would prepare for a Coloured - probably Patricia de Lille - he present Mayor of Cape Town to take over that position in 2019. In the meantime the Local Government Elections are in 2016 and for a lame duck leader to fight in those elections would not be wise.
However, the latest news I saw was that Jacob Zuma seems to have problems in the ANC as well and that there are ANC Parliamentarians involved in a plot to oust him. There was utter condemnation of the ANC Leadership by some Black intellectuals and it would be interesting to see what happens over the next 6 months.

SB, Zuma may be a stupid idiot but he was very clever with Nkandla, if I'm not mistaken. At least a part of Nkandla, if not all of it, was paid by him/his family. The R250M issue was only in respect of upgrades, that was "required to ensure the security of him and his 'little' family.
