After the knee injury to Pieter-Steph du Toit Mozart rushed to get an unsubstantiated report onto this site and kept on by repeating resultant reports that Du Toit would be out for the year.   Despite repeated warnings by thinking members of the site that there was no scan done and no specialist report(s) available - some members went ballistic.

It is therefore with hesitation that I bring the following report to the attention of members:-

"The Bulls face a tense 24 hour wait to find out if Springbok lock Victor Matfield will be out of the game for a prolonged period.

It was announced that Matfield would be "rested" according to SARU’s agreement with the franchises this week, but supersport.comrevealed earlier this week that Matfield actually has a knee injury which could be much more serious than expected.

While the Bulls team release continued to pronounce Matfield as being “rested” this week, Ludeke did admit that the lock has a knee injury and thus wouldn’t technically 'be resting'.

Matfield will see knee specialist Daan du Plessis on Thursday to ascertain the extent of the injury, but the initial prognosis is a three to four week layoff for the big lock.

Depending on the state of his knee, and how much cartilage damage there is, it may change as well, with the Bulls waiting on the final word before announcing their decision.

Ludeke said they couldn’t technically rest Matfield because according to the agreement they needed to inform SA Rugby a week in advance when they will be resting players.

"Victor has an injury, we need to declare him the Thursday before the next week that we are going to rest him.

"You can’t take a player through the week and hope he will play and then if can’t say you will rest him.   "You need to declare him a week ahead. You have to make your call up front," Ludeke explained.  "We are honest, we want to be transparent with making calls like that.

"We value players’ health and we will back the system. That’s why you need player depth and talent and quality all around in the players."

With Flip van der Merwe due to be back from injury next week and Grant Hattingh standing in, the only fringe player likely to get a run will be Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg.

Marvin Orie, who chose to stay at the Bulls despite overtures from the Lions, is still languishing in the Vodacom Cup and despite promises of a run in Super Rugby this year, has not been part of the match 23."

All that is clear from the above is that the rumours starting to circulate earlier this week about Matfield having a knee injury has been confirmed.   How serious the injury is will only be confirmed after  full medical report by a specialist has been completed.

There is however a huge difference between the Du Toit and Matfield cases.  Du Toit was stringing together top class performance after top-class performance in the matches  he played in.   Matfield was not doing the same and he was in the main coasting doing nothing in Tight 5 play - was taking minimal line outs - and was making strings of weak tackles as his only claim to fame.

Another difference is that Du Toit is desperate to get back asap.  The question is - is Matfield equally desperate to play?  Matfield knows that unless his performances in this series shows serious deficiencies - he is virtually assured of inclusion in the RC and the WC squads because of his friendship with Meyer.

So why bother to even play at all.   Participation in the remainder of Super 15 will only serve to expose already substantial deficiencies in Matfield's performances, especially in the critical Tight 5 situation.

Ohh Matfields alright for an old fella Mike, you gotta remember how old he is. The fact he is still playing is pretty amazing. I'll say Burger well be in the wc team too.

Mike - I know you dont like matfield but there's no reason to smear his character just to make a point. He's always been a true professional and stepped up, most recently last year when the bulls were on tour and he was supposed to rest for the whole thing.
I hope Flip Flop comes back strong. Is it a race between he and Eben for the number 4 jersey?
3ku1 - agree, Burger should be in the team.

I am not smearing Matfield's character in this case - that is not the point I wanted to convey at all.    I am merely stating that his performance as a Tight 5 player is not what it should be and that there are to my mind serious deficiencies in his performances.  His character is not an issue - being a 105 kgs lock in the present era as well as his physical abilities/deficiencies at the age of 38 are.
We know his ambition is to captain the Springboks in the WC - so there is always the question - is continued participation in the Super 15 series not a threat to that ambition because of potential injuries in that competition?
We also know his selection for the Springboks does not depend on top class performance, it depends on his friendship with Meyer - hence the question as to further participation in Super 15.

Oimatey you are certainly a decent guy but lets get real. How in the world does matfiled make a bok teram. Certainly not on merit. How did John Smit stay in the side ahead of Bissie - again not on merit. matfield and Smit ran things in a way that facvoured themsleves. its hard to argue agaisnt thsi .matfield has to have some relationship with Meyer that is clouding decision making.
Incidently Burger is 31!!! He is well rested and raring to go at a resepctable 114 kg.He is definitely not too old for this RWC.Note ths icomment:
Matfield will see knee specialist Daan du Plessis on Thursday to ascertain the extent of the injury, but the initial prognosis is a three to four week layoff for the big lock.
Bwahahahahaha wee victor is small for a loose forward at 105 kg!! This gentleman and rooi ass shows yet again how delusional folk are re matfiled

You are looking for serious trouble here!!!  You have committed a serious heresy crime and Mozart are going to get you for that one.
Remember Mozart said in a previous posting that Du Toit has thin shoulders and thin wrists - thus implying that Du Toit's knee injury stemmed from that deficiency in his physical build.   How dare you imply that his Holiness St Victor has thin shoulders and thin wrists in the way you criticizes his physical build?
So the big question is - according to Mozart's qualification - does His Holiness have thin wrists and thin shoulders equal to that of Du Toit - or his he a stronger specimen?   If the answer is yes - does his wrists and shoulders have an impact on his knee injury?

Mike, you are farting against thunder, mate because you are not missing the point. You are avoiding it. You are gloating like a nymphomaniac in a vibrator shop because there is a possibility of Matfield being sidelined through injury.
What you should be concerned about is the fact that Marfield is in the picture because of the youngsters not making the grade for various reasons. PSDT is a great great prospect but he was thrown into the deep end too soon. I do not give a crap what so-called knowledgable people think or say or will probably now start swearing about.
Coenie Oosthuizen - often injured. Jannie du Plessis at Oosthuizen's age. Not nearly played as many tests (if any - I haven't bothered to check).
Etzebeth, the supposed successor to Bakkies. Often on the mend. Bakkies at his age. Hardly ever injured.
Matfield at PSDT's age. Hardly ever injured. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, Matfield has had less injuries in his entire career than PSDT at this point in time.
May I drag in another of your pet hates? Compare the number of injuries to Morne Steyn, Lambie, Goosen and Pollard.
There are many examples of brilliant young potential stars compared to some of the previous greats. Go check.
Once again, before you crap in your best Sunday dress again......... I am talking about physical fitness to get the job done without constant injury problems.

I am talking about physical fitness NOT getting the job done you stupid stooge.  Meyer may want Matfield - but he is a let down for the side whether you misfits like it or not.  Useless in Tight 5 play and I mean utterly useless.  Call line outs to everybody bar himself because he does not take line outs the way he did.  His only claim to fame nowadays is standing around behind the mauls so as to make a few tackles and weak ones at that.
There are at least 5 locks better than this one at this stage in SA and his selection for the Springbok squad would be a disgrace.
I do not gloat about injuries like you and your fellow stooge do.  I must remember the following term:-
" ... gloating like a nymphomaniac in a vibrator shop because there is a possibility of Matfield being sidelined through injury."
That is really original coming from one of the greatest injury gloaters on this site - this phrase applies 100% to the two moffies on this site.   And I mean 100% to both of you.
Incidentally if you avoid being involved in Tight 5 play - like Matfield throughout his career was famous for - and if you avoid physical contact like Morne Steyn routinely does - the chances of injury are minimized.
I was very precise about the report and clearly stated that a specialist report should be the deciding factor - nothing else.   The rest of what I wrote has to do with Matfield's dubious performances this year and especially his lack of contribution to Tight 5 play.
There was unlike in the Du Toit incident on the part of your co-moffie and yourself,  where both of you wet yourself with glee -  no gloating on my part about the Matfield  injury issue.

Woooooosh. All over his flat forehead. Just as I expected. We do not gloat about the injuries, we are trying to get idiots like you to understand that it is  no use to rush players into to much big rugby too soon. Every time that I "gloat" about an injury it is to stress what I am always saying about the amount of rugby that youngsters play to soon.
For sure there are youngsters that go through lots of major rugby at an early stage unscathed, but the are few and far between. Almost every single one of the up and  coming "future greats" have had much more spells of injuries than those who  they have replaced, or are supposed to, replaced. You are talking k@k about Morne Steyn's so-called avoidance of physical contact. You would not want more egg on your face with comparative stats between him and some of  your big heroes, do you?
Challenge my arguments, p@opol. Injuries of Bakkies v Etzebeth.Injuries of Steyn v Lambie v Goosen v Jantjies v Boshoff v Pollard.Injuries of Jannie v Oosthuizen v Malherbe.
You can go find  the exact stats yourself. The bottom-line is that these youngsters are rushed into too much rugby too soon. At this rate I honestly doubt that PSDT would ever come near to achieving the same stature as an international lock the Matfield had, and he has all the potential to do so if his body can keep up.

Himmel - I posted a report on a possible knee injury to Matfield and made some comment on his lack of contribution since he came back on the scene and suddenly Dofdoos goes ballistic.   He brings in every player that was according to him injury-prone and tried to make out that a report in which I said the injury should not be pre-judged and that a specialist report will reflect the real situation is gloating.
That was my statement on the Du Toit injury precisely - but the joy that injury brought to the two numbskulls Mozart and Ceradunce resulted in unsubstantiated report after report on the injury be plastered all over the site - that alone showed gloating of an extreme nature.  Mozart even went further and implied that the injury to the knee is somehow linked to Du Toit having "thin shoulders" and "thin wrists".
When the report came out both the duds on the site tried to downplay the findings and their campaign against Du Toit went on unabated.   Your whole trend  in your latest posting has nothing to do with the injury record of players and everything to do with kowrtowing to way past their best players.
As for Morne Steyn - you would find that he routinely kicked more than 50% of all balls handled by him and that he passed over 30% of such balls - so him carrying a ball regularly  into contact is a  myth.   The same applies to his tackle stats - his missed tackle ratio in the past two years was routinely above 20% - and at times over 45%.   The reason was his efforts were poor and few and far between.   How you can even compare the biggest flop as a flyhalf in international rugby the past decade with other flyhalfs beats me hollow.

I never wish an injury on a player but I hope the injury forces him to hang up his boots. We don't need this old many anywhere near the field of play.
For if he is fit to play useless Meyer will select him for he thinks the sun shines out of Vic's ass.

Vlag you are speaking utter crap re young locks not making the grade. The only one given a chance to is Eben. That idiot Meyer brought Bakkies and Vic back without investing in what must be the greatest depth of young locks we have ever had.
It's testament to how poor Meyer is that he does not recognise this fact. One or two tests to Lood and then discarded...much like what he did to de Allende.....the guy is clueless.
Imagine being a Bok coach and having Etzebeth, PSDT, Willemse, Jacques du Plessis, Lood, Ruan Botha, Kleyn, Lewies and Mostert to choose from. Mouth watering.

Well I can assure you that HM's preferred lock pairing, when he strarted off, was PSDT and Eben. He said that often enough. The problem was that he just never got in. Any position to build them into a reliable combo. Willemse had his fair share of injuries as well. Du Plessis only came on the scene as a lock recently as did the rest. The Loodvoet "phenomenon" never even took off and he is never even mentioned any more.

Willemse injured bullshit he had a whole season of outstanding rugby only to be ignored by clueless Meyer.
As for Lood he had an outstanding S15 last year in a crap Cheetahs side had a great test debut and then got dumped by useless Meyer. What kind of faith and investment is that? Had he played 5 tests and been poor then fair enough but.......
Meyer is fucking useless. de Allende is busy making Meyers name mud every week as well.....much like Willemse did last year.
I bet that idiot fails to select Kitshoff and Koch for the Boks this year, that's how useless he is.

 Ceradunce
I want to be respectful and asked about the following statement:-

"Well I can assure you that HM's preferred lock pairing, when he started off, was PSDT and Eben. He said that often enough. "

Where on earth did you get that statement from?   When Meyer became coach his first desperate effort was to get Matfield and Botha back as the lock combination for the Springboks.   Matfield at the time turned down the approach and Botha initially refused the offer because of his Toulon contract.
It was only after the above refusals that Meyer selected Etzebeth as his no 4 lock and he went for Flippie van der Merwe as the other lock.   Not a word about Du Toit in 2012 - he was at that stage playing Under 20 rugby for the Sharks in any event.   If he played for the Bulls it may have been a different kettle of fish.
In 2013 the situation did not change - other than Du Toit started to play Super 15 rugby for the Sharks and did exceptionally well.   By May 2013 Meyer for the first time suggested  that the Sharks should pay attention to the line out calling issue and the impression may have been created that Meyer may be interested in getting Du Toit into the Springbok team.   Meyer did squat about it at that stage, but included Du Toit in the 2013 EOYT squad.
At that stage Bakkies Botha got involved and the interest Meyer had in Du Toit vanished into thin air.   He had Du Toit play in one test from the bench for 10 minutes (against Wales) and thereafter used Botha in the Scottish and French tests.   This was when your compadre Mozart went ballistic about Botha's performances - but he did have sub-par performances.
In 2014 Du Toit had very little game time before he was injured and Meyer at last persuaded Matfield to return to the playing field and not a word was ever said about Du Toit since 2013.  There was  no way that your quoted statement about Du Toit was anywhere near the truth.   Meyer was more  interested in Matfield and Botha than he ever was interested in Etzebeth and Du Toit.

Hell it was all over the newspapers how Meyer was begging Matfield to return - even promising him the captaincy - and there were reports of a tiff between Toulon and Meyer about Botha as early as 2012.   Botha was ultimately released by Toulon at the end of 2013 for the EOYT - after Toulon refused a request for release in the RC that year.
Be it as it may - Botha and Matfield were Meyer's first choice locks all along and that was proved during the latter part of 201e and during 2014.  Both flopped and it is to Botha's credit that he realized that and opted out during November 2014.
The egocentric Matfield is still there - despite the fact that he has reduced our  Tight 5 to a Tight 4 and is of no real value to the team at all.

BS. Show me. There could not have been any tiff with Toulon. Bakkies would have had to be released according to IRB rules. Produce the links to those reports. Where are the reports that Toulon refused to release Bakkies. Come on, mate. You always come up with these pipe-dreams that you cannot substantiate.
I, and a number of others, have asked you on numerous occasions how you judge Matfield's "deficiencies" in the tight 5. You always come up with this BS that he is not pulling his part in the scrums. I would like to know what proof you have of that?
All of these so-called facts are BS that you dream up. Similar to Morne Steyn's move to PSG and Bakkies being replaced by Ali Williams and Beast and Jannie kakking out Matfield because he wasn't scrumming and, and, and, and. Do you want me to add the rest of your balls-ups.
Now p !ss off and go get those links to those reports.

When during the RC in 2013 Meyer wanted to call up Botha - it was all over the newspapers and Toulon refused to release him.  The eminent Dofdoos then claimed that the RC is not in the test window periods and Toulon was correct in their stance as to his release.   Remember that Dofdoos?  It took days to clear that one up and as per normal that you were as always wrong.
The other player Meyer used in 2012 because he could not get Matfield was Bekker, but the latter also opted out.
If you cannot see that Matfield is piss poor as a Tight 5 player and produces nothing in scrums and mauls you must have your eyes tested.   On his own he has turned our Tight 5 into a Tight 4.  The clown is even calling line outs to go to everyone baar himself - especially since at crucial stages in matches he buggered up line outs.   If you cannot see that players just push this 105 kg has been out of their way - you need a further eye-test.
