When Meyer announced the squad to represent the Springboks in the WC there were serious reservations about his selections and the result of a seriously defective team performance resulted from the squad selections. Lets look at waht actually transpired and ask question as to the varying players concerned:-
Zane Kirchner
Kirchner last played test rugby in 2012 and was last year brought on from the bench for 10 minutes in one test. In the WC he started in one test - was totally clueless against Japan and never used - even from the bench in another match. Why was he there at all? Seriously flawed selection
Jean de Villiers
After his serious injury in the game against Wales last year - we all watch in anguish about hsi return to Springbok rugby. He recovered physically - but all his performances since his return were seriously defective. Despite the sympathy of fans - was it right to select him without a sound performance base? As it turned out the injjruy prone De Villiers suffered another career-ending injury during the second game eh played in. However, he did not perform well enough in the two games he played in (Japan and Samoa). The question remains should an out-of-form player be selected in the hope that he can play himself into form during the tournament? The answer is simple - it just is not possible to recover form during the tournament. Flawed Selection
Morne Steyn
Morne's last 2014 test against Australia in Perth was a disaster - the worst performance conceivable from a Springbok flyhalf. In the Top 14 he was normally the bench flyhalf for his Club in France and was only selected to start for them if their first-choice flyhalf was not available. He was selected as third choice flyhalf and effectively used for only 15 minutes in one game during the RWC when their was no chance of the Springboks losing the test. Why was he selected in the first place. Seriously Flawed selection
Fourie du Preez
Du Preez was out of test rugby since June 2014 when ehw as injured playing for the Springboks. He only played a few matches for his Club in Japan during January - February 2014. Before he could join the Springbok camp in June 2014 he was injured again in pre-season training -n fact since 2012 Du Preez was injured more than he actually played matches for his club or for the Springboks. He played no tests in the RC and missed the Argentina test as well. He went to the WC without any performance record in more than a year - and hi form when he did play in June 2014 was nothing exceptional - average at best. His first game for the Springboks this year was in the Samoa test - where he showed some glimpses of good performance. Those glimpses became less and less and by the semi-final he was sub-standard. He was part of a flawed fame plan and although his passes was accurate the result was ultimately deplorable. Meyers main reason for selection of Fourir du Preez was that he is aware of what Du Preez is capable of but he used is instead of "was" since there was no indication that he is still capable of performance abilities of the past. Flawed Selection
Ruan Pienaar
Pienaar was always a certain selection by Meyer when Du Preez was not available. In the tests this year he was at best substandard in performance. His service was slow and ineffective. His kicking game was deplorable and his defense was shockingly poor. He was taken into the WC squad and played a shocker in the test against Japan. Since that game he was used a few times off the bench. His first starting game since the Japan test was yesterday and he put in a really shockingly poor performance.Seriously Flawed Selection
Willem Alberts
Alberts developed a reputation that he was a top tackler and ball carrier - but over the past three years he was more noted for missed tackles and a deficient work rate. Another player who was injured in June 2014 and played only three games in the Super Rugby series and was shockingly poor in all three, In the Argentina away test he had his first game on test level this year - but showed no sign of overcoming his seriously defective work rate . He was injured more than he played and was not capable of playing before round 3 of the WC. He was his normal self in the relevant games when he came off the bench. His total game time consisted of more or less 30 minutesA shocking Selection
Victor Matfield
Matfield has always been a great favourite and friend of Meyer who after his retirement in 2011 was persistently asked by Meyer to return to play rugby - which happened in 2014. Since then he played for the Bulls and the Springboks and his era in the team was noticed by serious lack of physicality on his part, His record with both sides was deplorable. Other Springbok locks said he should not be in the WX squad - but he was included. He was sub-standard in the Japan test nd not much better i the Samoa test. He came back on the bench and played a shocker against the AB's. His last game was also a flawed performance.Seriously flawed selection
Jannie du Plessis
Jannie became known over the last two years as a p[oor scrummager with serious disciplinary deficiencies. He was poor in the Japan test and even similar in the Samoan test. Meyer persisted with him in the tests until he was injured. Luckily he was not in the quarterfinal as the starting prop and in the games he came on the scrumming of the Springboks, the quality of scrumming deteriorated badly. Seriously flawed selection
Schalk Brits
No conceivable reason for his selection could be found. he only had minimal game time. What was he doing in the squad? Shockingly Poor Selection
The above was not the only problematic selections. Because of Meyer's constant persistence with reputation players there was no real squad development since his appointment as coach. He was not in any way interested in development of a viable squad and when some of his favourite reputation players opted out - he was forced to make panic selections. In the case of the centers we had the case of the pair having had only three tests as a combination and the fact that they did not fail was telling - especially in view of their deficient periods in the jobs. MOST OF THE THINKING MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WAS CRITICAL OF THE SQUAD SELECTION AND IN GENERAL THE PUBLIC WAS UPSET ABOUT THE SELECTION OF THE ABOVE PLAYERS.
